My wife was involved in a fairly severe side-impact collison that knocked our 2004 Ford Explorer, equipped with optional side-impact curtain airbags, 4 feet sideways, destroyed the driver's door (direct impact to the driver's door) collapsed it into the driver's seat, and resulted in $6,000 of insurance-estimated damage. The side curtain airbags failed to deploy. The local Ford dealer that has the vehicle for repairs indicated that they have no idea why the side curtain airbags failed to deploy, and that the on-board check system does not indicate any faults. My wife did knock her head on the driver's side window during the collision, but does not appear to have sustained any lasting injuries. I'm very concerned that this safety system we paid extra for does not operate as intended, and does not appear to afford the protection promised by Ford. I have digital pictures of the damaged vehicle and the accident if your department would like to inspect them. . . Just need to know where to upload them to.
Passenger's side door was slammed by the driver and passenger's side door air bag inadvertently went off. Driver took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, but a cause could not be determined.
My 2002 Ford Explorer front driver side airbag deployed when my wife started the car my 2 year old daughter was in the car also . We have a police report. My wife is terrified to get back in the car now. The people at Ford want to charge me to fix the car, which is crazy. I am trying to find out if this has been reported before.
When attempting to start the vehicle passenger's side air bag deployed, then exploded inadvertently. As a result, the steering wheel caught on fire. Vehicle remained in a garage where the incident occurred.
Nhtsa campaign 00v179000; Ford issued an air bag recall. This vehicle is not included in the recall, however the air bag light illuminated. The VIN is outside the remedy scope.

While driving consumer lost control of the vehicle and hit a curb and vehicle flipped more than once. Both driver's side and passenger's side air bags did not deploy. Driver sustained injuries, and was transported by ambulance to a hospital. Vehicle was totaled.
My daughter and I were involved in an auto accident in my 2002 Ford Explorer when another vehicle pulled out in front of us. I was traveling approximately 60 mph prior to slamming on my brakes. The ems driver estimated impact at 40 mph. My vehicle sustained $6600+ in damages to the front end. Neither the driver nor passenger side airbag deployed. The ems driver and the wrecker said given the damage to the front end of my vehicle the air bags should have deployed. The ems driver also said it was typical of a Ford to have the air bags malfunction. I sustained neck and low back injuries including damage to 4 disc in my spine according to the mri report. My daughter sustained injuries to her right shoulder, radiological testing is scheduled for later this month to determine the cause of her pain and loss of motion. She has also suffered with low back pain. I asked the mechanic responsible for the repairs on my vehicle at the dealership where I bought the vehicle about the air bags and was not given much of an answer. He basically said the damage did not go far enough into the engine area for the sensors to pick up the crash. Given the damage to my front end and the need for replacement of multiple parts under the hood of my car and the injuries sustained I did not find this to be an acceptable answer.
My son was driving our 2000 Ford Explorer and accidentally struck a telephone pole near the center of the front bumper. Neither the driver side nor the passenger side air bag deployed on impact.
Air bags inoperable due to high resistance or poor connections in the side air bag (sab) wiring harness circuits or restraints control module. (Ford article #03-24-1) manufacturer makes a service kit for repair at customers expense of $800 installed. I guess air bags aren't that important.
I purchased a new 2003 Ford Explorer as a gift and I noticed several days later, that the passenger side air bag compartment had started a sinking , appearance in the compartment area that holds the air bag, it was questioned and I was told it was juat settling. As the sinking worsen, months down the road, I questioned it again, and was told the same thing again. Now the air bag compartment has started sinking badly and the compartment is now budging out to the point where you can put all your fingers under and in it. The bag can deploy at any time now. If this should happen all of a sudden and it will, it will cause a terrible accident, possible death if the sudden fright cause the driver to go out of control. My daughter said the air bag was beginning to frighten her and she again attempted to address the issue at the dealership service department in which the vehicle was purchased from, again she was told it was not covered under warranty, and that the cause seem to be elsewhere, yet in fact if the issue had been addressed when I first brought it to their attention,it would have been covered. I have contacted Ford corporation, awaiting a resolution to this problem. This is a very serious problem that needs to be taken care of immediately before an accident or death arises from this issue.
Side air bags are attached to the bottom rear center of the seat back. This placement allows the wires to be damaged by the feet of the rear seat occupant setting a trouble code and disableing the air bag system ! I am a mechanic and found this on an Explorer I was working on today.

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer, on may 25, 2003 I was taking an elderly lady from a boarding home that I volunteer at, to the cemetary. I got her in the Explorer, turned the key on and the driver side air bag exploded, I never even got to put the car in gear or anything. . My husband (gordon shernan) talked with Ford motor company and because of the vehicle being over warranty, they weren't the least bit concerned. I would really like to know why one went off and not the other, and why it went off by just starting the vehicle. I feel this is really a safety issue, not only did it scare half the life out of both of us, but makes you worry every time you get in a car with air bags. If I had been driving on a road way, I certainly would have had an accident. I find it very lax on Ford motor company part that they are not concerned at all. Fortunately I walked away with just a sore chest, shoulder and stiff neck.
Consumer stated that parked vehicle was hit on the driver's side door by another car travelling approximately 25-30mph. Consumer's driver's side airbag did not deploy. Collision caused over $3500 worth of damage to vehicle. Ts.

While driving at 55 mph and trying to avoid being hit by another vehicle, Explorer ran into a guardrail, and shoulder belt didn't prevent consumer from hitting her head on windshield and falling on passenger's side of vehicle. Also, driver's side air bag didn't deploy, althought the passenger side air bag did.
No deployment of driver's side air bag during a collision resulted in driver sustaining injuries. Vehicle totaled.
