3 Software problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/05/2019

While driving down the highway the Explorer has suddenly shut down on two occasions. The first time (July 2019) I was driving about 50 mph. I was able to cruise off into a median. The second time (Aug 5, 2019) I was coming off an on ramp onto a busy highway at about 60 mph. Once again the car suddenly powered off. I was lucky to be in the far right lane and was able to cruise off into a wide grassy area. The traffic I was merging into was at 70 mph. In both instances the wrench light came on. This is very dangerous as the car loses power and you have practically no control over the steering or brakes. If I had not been able to cruise off and/or had been in the center lane of a major highway I could have been rear ended by vehicles at high speeds. In both instances, once I was off the road I turned the car off, waited a few seconds, and restarted. The car started back up normally and then seemed to work ok. It's like the electrical or software system requires a 'reset'. This is a serious safety issue as it occurs with no warning and the driver cannot control the car and must come to a stop to turn off the engine and restart.

4 Software problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the navigational system functions disabled without warning. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road and turned the engine off. Once restarted, the navigation system began to operate normally however, the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five times for the same problem. The navigational system software was updated. In addition, an unknown part was replaced at a later date. The failure continued to persist after the repairs. The dealer was unable to provide a remedy for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 12,000.

6 Software problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

In the words of one of the several Ford motor CO. Customer care case manager I've spoken to since I purchased this vehicle about 6 weeks ago, Ford's mytouch system is "totally dysfucntional". The software upon which this system is based was apparently CO-authored by microsoft and Ford is currently telling customers they have to wait for the next release, supposedly due to be released in "the first quarter of next year". Has anyone ever heard this kind of message before. . . Think ms vista! my Explorer has an approx. 8"x5" touchscreen in the middle of the dash. It is supposed to come on when I start the vehicle and many functions of the vehicle are controlled by touching icons on the screen. Unfortunately, when the screen fails to come on, usually for about the initial 20 minutes after starting the vehicle, the driver controls are unavailable. This includes features like being able to view the rear-view camera, turning on the heated seats, climate control features, dealing with phone calls and selecting music sources and radio channels, etc. . Mytouch also includes a feature where its supposed to sync to the driver's mobile phone, but this only works intermittently at best. The worst problem with this system, which I believe makes the vehicle unsafe for nighttime driving, is when the touchscreen, which cannot be turned off or dimmed, starts flickering (Ford's term is "strobing") very rapidly while driving after dark. This can continue for up to 30 minutes at a time, and is incredible distracting while trying to drive. I've posted a video on youtube under the heading "Ford mytouch stobing". This problem has been known to Ford since the 2011 model year and they continue to sell these problematic vehicles without telling customers until after they take possession.

7 Software problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/26/2011

Ford "myfordtouch" system has failed on numerous occasions. It has frozen, locked up, and continuously rebooted. When this occurs, you lose all functionality and ability to change radio stations, adjust climate control, use navigation, hands free functions, etc. While there is some manual controls for basic operations, it does not allow full control of tall systems. For instance, when the mft system fails, you have no ability to turn on or adjust the rear climate controls for rear passengers. Dealer has tried upgrading software, resetting software, reinstalling software, and replacing hardware. While the problem is not as bad as it has been, it continues with no resolve.

8 Software problem of the 2006 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

2006 Ford Explorer sporadically does not speed up when you hit the accelerator. Ford apparently knows about this issue and has a software fix in place that you must proactively contact them on. . . In other words, you have to have the problem on the road and call them before they will do anything about it. It occurs everytime we drive the car, however, it is not consistent when it occurs or how often. . . At times it happens the entire time the car is being driven. The consequences are that you can be driving 10mph or 70mph and when you hit the accelerator, the car engine will rev up much like you were sitting in neutral (I. E. It does not speed up) and after a few seconds will kick into gear/engage and start speeding up. This seems very dangerous if you were not expecting this to occur and were trying to pass a car with possible oncoming traffic. This issue should require Ford to recall the vehicles before somebody gets injured, if they have not already been.
