3 Steering Gear Box problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/02/2007

Pulling out of a neighbor's driveway, my shift rod cracked off and dangled, leaving the truck immobile. Nothing had preceded this. Due to towing fees, I contacted a local mechanic who was able to bring it to his shop, a mile away, vs. To Ford, which would have required a $200 flatbed tow. This provider tried for 3 weeks to get a part, # 5l2c36529a, told that Ford had 1300 vehicles with this issue. If this had happened on the street, there would have been an accident. Several calls to Ford and local dealerships have been not only unproductive but fruitless and demeaning. We are concerned for others that have this same issue, which Ford (which I have always been loyal to prior to now) has gone out of its way to deny, are going to be endangered and would like a recall investigation, please!.

5 Steering Gear Box problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/07/2004

I brought my SUV Dec 2004. I had only 40 miles on it. I now have a little over 7,000. One month after purchasing my SUV it wouldn't start up. I took it in to be serviced but they were unable to find anything. A month later it would stall while driving and when I shift from drive to reverse the whole truck jumps into reverse. It also hesitate to go into reverse. I've been having this problem for the past 8 months. I continue to take it Ford to get service. First they didn't find anything wrong now thye're saying that it's a recall and "fixed" the problem. But I continue to have the problem. . I'm currently in the process of tryimg to get Ford to give me a new truck. But they only trying to offer 2,500 dollars. I don't want the money I want a new truck. I paid for a new truck not a truck that will contiue to have problems. My abs light keeps coming on too. I'm going to take it back to Ford to have it looked at again. It's such a hassel to keep taking my truck back for the same problems and it's not being fixed. I don't think they know what is wrong with my truck. I have lemon.

Failure Date: 08/28/2001

The vehicle has been in the service dept 3 times since purchase on 8/01. Upper & lower steering shaft has been replaced on 9/14/01. The front end rattles when I am operating the vehicle over normal terrain. Steering wheel has a popping feel when I go over a bump or turn right, feels like th e car is going out of control (at slow speed). The vehicle will be back at Ford on 12/6/01 for further testing to detect/correct these problems. After looking at your website, I have discovered similar complaints exist. I will take copies with me to the dealership supervisor today.

7 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/23/2001

Steering wheel started shaking slightly at low speed on 5/23/01. I entered a freeway and just as I was approaching 70 mph, the entire vehicle started shaking violently to the point I nearly lost control. Started to pull off road, but shaking abated. Took veh to dealer & after road test & insp. Was told that air bubbles had formed in the steering sys. , that certain Explorers were known to develop this defect after varying mileages, and that Ford says this problem is a "no fix" and nothing can be done about it. Dealer also sd that they had replaced entire rack & pinion systems on Explorers still under warranty, but it had no effect on shaking. Heard this a. M. That firestone is accusing Ford of covering up steering defects that contrib. To Explorers rolling; it rang a bell & thought you folks should know about my experience. . . Will make my veh. Avail. For insp. , should you folks or mfr. Want to.

8 Steering Gear Box problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/12/2000

I think that you explore the steering on the Ford explore. It is mich to quick for the adverage driver. This is the reason there is so many roolovers/wrecks when a tire fails. I was driving when the tire failed on my Explorer. I have built and drove race cars for years, have been to nascar drivers school (twice), and I believe this helped me control my truck when the tire failed. The every day driver would have reacted when the tire failed, the quick steering would have over reacted and the driver can not catch up with the reaction, thus a wreck. Ford should replace the steering boxes on all Explorer,s with a slower steering box.
