While driving 10-15 mph vehicle steered left. Consumer was unable to control vehicle, and hit a concrete divider, causing $ 4000. 00 damage to vehicle. Dealer determined that spindle assembly had broken on right front.

2 Steering Knuckle Spindle problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/01/2002

The steering column knuckle that holds the two-piece column together (under the dash) was improperly maintained or manufactured. One of two assembly pins was missing causing the steering wheel to free-spin, resulting in complete steering loss.

Failure Date: 09/21/2001

While making a slow turn to park there was a loud noise. Vehicle stopped , consumer tried to back up, but again vehicle did not move. Consumer saw left front wheel was tilted to one side. Had vehicle towed to dealer who noticed the front steering knuckle had broken.

4 Steering Knuckle Spindle problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

Dealer states " out of warranty" , vehicle allmost rolled over due to complets separation of the front wheel and spindle from vehicle. This will most likely be a defective assembly or poor engineering. Bolt for upper spindle to ball joint broken or missing and ball joint shaft sheared off. Brake line broken off and axle seperated from the housing. Recommend a recall on this very poor design and or a replacement of all these ball joints produced by whatever company made this ball joint.

Failure Date: 08/31/1999

Vehicle a lemon in shop for 9 months, turning steering wheel would not turn tires, steering knuckle broke casting at wheel.
