This has happened on both the rear driver and passenger side of the vehicle. Ford has been notified many times with no response. I have been doing a lot of research into this issue, and realized that hundreds of owners ar claiming the same problem.

Contact stated noise was coming from the steering wheel, making it difficult to steer the vehicle. Consumer asked if there was a covering to put on the steering wheel, but there was not. The only solution was to replace the entire steering column assembly. Consumer did put an after market steering wheel cover, but did not help, it would absorb through the cover. This happened every time the wheel was gripped. The service dealer has not inspected the vehicle to determine the cause of the problem. The manufacturer has been contacted.

I bought my truck in sept 1998. In Aug 1999 I took it into the dealer because the drivers mirror vibrates at speeds of 55mph and up. Also the steering wheel vibrates and the left front tire feels like it is going to come off at about 65 mph. I have everything documented and have been in now 7 times. The first time they changed the mirror, the 2nd the balanced/rotated the tires, the 3 time they had me buy new tires, the 4th the put another set of new tires on, the 5th I had the service mgr and head mechanic drive it again the tires were balanced/rotated, the 6th time the regional service manager drove it. Then a factory rep from Ford motor company came down from detroit and called me on the phone. With each time I had it in I was told it is "normal" for a mirror to vibrate but each of them said they didn't feel the virbration in the front end or steering column. I wrote a letter to the owner of the dealership along with a c/c to the president/ceo of Ford motor CO. I stated the GA lemon law/new car warrenty act of 1990 and per the lemon law giving them 1 more opportunity to fix the problem. The service manager called me on 11/4/99 and I took it in the am of 11/5/99 for the 7th time. He looked the suspension over and said he could not find anything wrong. I have copies of everything I mailed out and all the times I have been in. The vehicle has gotten worse, it is hard to see anything out of the drivers mirror at 50 mph and I can not see anything at 70 mph. The left front tire feels like it is going to come off when I reach about 65 mph, and it also is hard to control the vehicle. The steering wheel has a vibration in it and the front seats now have a vibration. I feel very unsafe in this vehicle. I ask on 11/5/99 about a replacement and the service manager said the dealership said they would not do that. I would have to go persue the lemon law. I don't want my children or anyone else to get hurt. Please help!!.
This very easily could have caused a serious accident.

Vehicles steering wheel/column has problems with noise and erratic operation. Dlr can not fix. Tt.
Since 1998 I have a noise (clunking) coming from somewhere in my car. I have taken it twice to jordan Ford and once to my mechanic for this problem. Jordan Ford heard it but could not locate where it was coming from. I also was told they other reports of this problem. But they told me not to worry about it. When I accelerate or coming out of my garage, turning corners I hear this noise. It is very loud. I saw that there was a recall on the accelerater pedal, but I was never told of this by Ford. What was the problem, could my problem be from that? I'm thinking too maybe the clunk is coming from the wheels. If any info on this, please let me know. Thankyou, donna l. Miller.
This vehicle has been in the service department 3 times since September 2001. The steering column has been replaced, the wheel bearings have been replaced(this was suppose to eliminate steering column rattle) and the lower control arm has been replaced. I still hear and feel a metallic rattle coming from the steering column. In my review of your website other 2002 Explorer owners are experincing the same problem. I have talked to at least three other owners that have the same problem. My dealer has done everything recommended by Ford, but nothing has solved the problem. Ford is "working on it". They have been working on it since September 2001. My safety concern is this. If something is loose that is causing this noise it has to be progressing. What will happen after more mileage builds on this vehicle? will I be driving down the highway one day and lose control due to steering failure? there is to much smoke here for that not to be fire sooner of later by my Explorer or some other owner. How long does it take for a company the size of Ford to solve a problem?.
