Ford Explorer owners have reported 10 problems related to steering wheel vibrate (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Explorer based on all problems reported for the Explorer.
My Explorer started having popping noises when turning left or right. It is bad enough to give significant feedback in the steering wheel and vibrations throughout the front passenger area. When I jack up the front end unloading the wheels, there is no noise or popping. With full weight on the wheels, when the wheel is turned slightly left and right and get significant popping and cracking feedback via the tie rods, the noise has progressed into the steering wheel freezing in place while driving the vehicle. Not being able to control the car is a major life safety issue if not addressed this has the potential to cause major injuries or death. If it has not already. The dealer is aware of the issues and I find countless online instances of this mechanical defect.

I was traveling approx 60mph when an alert from the dash sounded, the steering wheel vibrated and 2 messages appeared on the onboard messaging system: 1) "power steering assist fault" and 2) "service advance trac". At that time I lost all power steering ability. I am very fortunate that I was driving on a straight stretch of road at the time as I am unsure if I could have kept the vehicle from going off of the road. I pulled over at a gas station and turned the car off. I restarted the car approx 5 min later and it had no warnings and the power steering had been restored. The next day, the exact same thing happened, except I was going approx 10mph turning left into the Ford dealership to let them look at this problem. They informed me today that they needed to order a new "rack" and that the part was "backordered" and had a delivery date of November (today's date is 8/27/12).

While driving on hwy 38 in SC, the steering wheel started shaking real bad and then the entire SUV started shaking and we veered off the right side of the road into a field. The front left tire came off and we came to a complete stop. Upon further investigation I saw that 2 of the 5 lug posts were sheared off and the other 3 were bent. In addition the molding around the front right tire came off and the driver's side door was jammed shut. After everyone was out safely the SUV has been towed and is with an auto center for repairs and body work. I searched online and this is a known problem for this vehicle yet Ford has not had any recalls despite the frequency of this issue. If you search "2003 Ford Explorer problems" it will come up. This needs to be looked into before someone gets killed. I can see that several people have paid for their vehicles to be repaired only to have it happen again on another wheel.
