The contact owns a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. While driving the vehicle, the factory installed interior lights began flashing on and off. The dealer stated that the failure was due to a faulty connection with the rear view mirror. She was charged $477 plus labor for the repair. The contact wrote and called the manufacturer, but they have not responded. The approximate date of failure was in November of 2006. The second incident occurred when the vehicle was taken to the same dealer who stated that there was a leak in the engine. She stated that the vehicle has an engine warranty of 60,000 miles. However, the dealer charged her for this repair as well. This failure occurred on February 6, 2007. The contact notified her state attorney generals office who stated that they received a letter from Ford and that she could sue Ford if she wished. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 57,000 and failure mileage was 55,000.

: the contact stated while accelerating, the vehicle vibrated and a noise was heard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer four times where the transmission converter was replaced twice, however the problem recurred. Also, while the contact was changing the oil it was noticed a wire from the battery was bare. The consumer stated the transmission is still not shifting properly and during acceleration, the vehicle still vibrates. Upon inspection the 02 sensor was found damaged. The sensor was covered in glue and wrapped around to the transmission mount. Updated 12/01/06.

Upon inspection of the wiring just above the oil filter drain shroud during routine maintenance there was a wire harness found with exposed wires. The three wires were encased in one bundle but are supposed to be isolated. It appears that the harness has been rubbing against the upper edge of the oil drain shroud since the vehicle was built. This bundle of wires should be checked and repaired on all 2002 Ford Explorers. There is the possibility of a fire.

On several occasions when I put on my left turn signal it doesn't blink it just freezes and smoke comes from the steering column. As soon as I turn the turn signal off it stops smoking. It will be ok for a while but then happens again. Yesterday when it happened I had trouble getting it to stop smoking. I am making an appointment today to have this corrected.
Running taillights become dim then fail completely with the smell of burnt wiring, coming from the dashboard vicinity. On board computer shows no failure and front running/marker lights still operable. No other exterior lighting failure.

1998 Ford Explorer, 5. 0, sn 1fmzu32pxwzb80739, speed control
after learning about the fires caused by the speed control on other Ford vehicles I check the '98. Voltage is measured at the speed control disengage switch located on master cylinder. Using a voltage meter I measured 12 volts to this switch with the ignition switch in the off position with the key removed. This indicates that the switch is hot 100% of the time. I have not had a failure yet, but am concerned that this represents a possible failure in the future causing the vehicle to urn up. I have noted that there have been 16 failures and fires on 1998 Ford Explorers do to this problem.

1. My 1998 Ford Explorer XLT burst into flames with absolutely no warning while parked at my daughter's high school parking lot. 2. The vehicle was consumed by flames and is a total loss. The local fire department brought two units to put the fire out. 3. After filing my insurance claim, I researched the problem and found that the Ford Explorer poses a big fire risk. 4. Specifically, my cruise control stopped working 3 months ago and just as been documented by the NHTSA, the defective cruise control caused the electrical fire. 5. I thank my lucky stars nobody was hurt. . . . But if my Explorer had been parked inside my apartment building this incident would have burned down my building. Pls let me know if you require additional documentation or photos.

Vehicle taken to repair shop when the left turn signal did not operate. The result showed that a new computer module was needed. Then, vehicle was driven home when consumer heard a crackling noise coming from inside the steering column. Vehicle returned back to the repair shop, and mechanic determined that there was a problem with the electrical wires in the steering column. Repair was performed by the repair shop.
The vehicle would not shift from park to drive. It turns out that there was an electrical short causing fuses to blow while driving. The fuse that had blown most was the fuse for my brake lights. I was driving without brake lights several times, unknowingly. The first dealership that I took the vehicle had the truck for 3 days and said that the alarm system was causing the short. The alarm system was installed by the selling dealership. I was sent away from the dealership with bigger (higher amp) fuses in my fuse box, a few extra fuses, and the knowledge of how to over-ride the shifter lock if the fuse was blown. After driving the vehicle for approximately two and a half weeks, most of the time without brake lights, I was able to take the it to the dealership that I purchased the vehicle from. This dealership happens to be about 90 miles from my current residence. The other dealership found the real problem. The wiring harness had to be replaced because apparently, some of the wires got too hot, melted the insulation, and fused themselves together. The vehicle was in the shop for 9 days. Ford also claims that I shouldn't worry about any damage that may have been done to the electrical components in my vehicle due to the short and one of the dealerships putting bigger fuses in the fuse box.
Vehicle overheated/ thermostat, rear wiper motor stopped working, check engine light stays on continually, belt squeals on rainy days, radio comes on by itself, tires to be replaced, lived at same address since vehicle purchase and not even a notice for recall on tires.

Consumer stopped vehicle at a traffic light and engaged the turn signal when smoke suddenly began emitting from the steering column into the passenger cabin. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the problem as an electrical wiring malfunction.
The multi-function switch in my 2000 Ford Explorer XLT started smoking when the turn signal was turned on. The service man informed me that this situation needed to be taken care of as soon as possible because if it was not fixed there was a chance that a fire would start because of this malfunction and could cause a fire that would take out the entire wiring system of my vehicle. Ford explained to me that they did not consider this a "hazard" it was something they considered a "maintenance issue. " I have 42,000 miles on my vehicle. I have owned 2 Explorers previous to this and one of my other Explorers experienced this problem as well.
The steering wheel had to be tilted in order for the brake lights to work.
Electrical fire in steering column. While traveling at highway speeds at night, drive lights went out and steering column was glowing and smell of burnt plastic. Wiring harness, multi-function switch both melted. No after market add on or modifications made to vehicle. Ts.
Center console with computer info display caught fire while driving.
When making turns, especially right turns, vehicle slides and almost turns over. . Consumer states vehicle is experiencing acceleration problems, and there was a humming noise coming from the engine, signals are not working, dealer replaced a defective connector and multi-function switch, firestone tires have experienced tread separation, which were replaced in July 2001, the rear seats move/bounce when driving, the rear seat belts were inoperative, the dealer replaced the buckles, there was smoke coming from the steering column, dealer replaced the multi-function switch, the windshield was chipped, the alarm would not chut off at times, dealer replaced a bad loose wire.
Electrical harness was found to be defective at the pcm connector resulting in sporadic dying and failure to start problems. This problem exists in the vehicle to this day despite several attempts to tighten the individual female pin connectors within the pcm connector. Each attempt cures the problem from weeks to months, but in the end it comes back. As a side note, the airbag indicator light illuminated. It is assumed to be also due to this defective wiring harness. This is a dangerous dying condition and has resulted in several near accidents.
It started with the rear driver window intermittently not working. Then the lock drop down inside door making the door unable to unlock and open. Also engine stalled. Took to the dealer. They fixed the door but couldn't find anything wrong with the engine or the window. Window worked for them. Brought the truck home that night and while I was driving it the battery light on the dash when on and the battery gauge started fluctuating to the "h" and finally held there. Turned truck off and let sit and everything went back to normal. Didn't reacurr for a couple of days but then started up again. Abs light also started coming on and outside temp gauge started to go crazy. Also engine idle started to surge as the battery gauge surged. This was on a weekend. Took truck back to dealer. They couldn't make it do any of these things. They kept it for 5 days and drove it. Still nothing. They decided to look at the electrical system and found the maxi fuse and wiring system burnt. I asked if it could have caught fire and they said no. However I looked at your web site under consumer complaints and found the several people have complained that their Explorer had caught fire because of the wiring harness. Some of these Explorers were not running at the time of the fire and were parked in a garge. The dealer did replace the fuse and wiring harness however it took 11/2 weeks to get the parts in because they were backordered. Obviously there is a problem with the wiring systems. I also park mine in a garge. I am now worried and afraid to park it in the garge. I have two small children and their safety is my first concern.
Vehicle stalled at 25 mph, also , when going over a small bump rpms went up to 4000-5000. Mechanic thought vehicle stalling was an electrical problem, not taken to dealer yet.

Approx 1 month ago, vehicle failed just after leaving the freeway and had to be towed to dealer. The problem was found to be the main fuse controlling all drive-train components, including computer, fuel injectors, transmission, etc. The dealer ( harris Ford) could not find the cause after two days of investigation. I was returned the vehicle with two extra 30 amp fuses (and a $500 bill) in case the problem recurred. Approx. Two weeks later, the vehicle again died, this time in portland, or. Fortunately it did not happen on the freeway, since all power was lost when the engine died. The vehicle has been at a portland dealer for the past week, again with no explanation of the cause. Despite the fact that the vehicle will not run, and I have an esp, Ford nor its dealers will commit to covering repairs under warranty. Had this happened at freeway speed of 60 or 70 mph, a serious accident could occur, potentially with fatal injuries.
The oil pressure gauge shorted out, the air bag wiring harness, front axle seals, brake caliper pads, brake line, power door lock assembly and multi function switch assembly were all replaced. The timing chain, tensioner, idle air control, valve intake gaskets and the seats which ripped were also replaced. * jb.

Vehicle was parked and consumer looked out of the window and saw the vehicle up in flames. The fire department put out the fire, and they determined that the fire was caused by electrical wire.
While driving vehicle interior lamps/odometer/speedometer, wipers, and power windows went out. Possible cause defective fuse. Dealer's engineers are looking into problem. Dealer repaired wiring.
