1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2019

The truck on its own downshifted to 1st gear while driving on the freeway at 65-70mph. The check engine light came on. This happened 3 times. The obd error code p0720. The dealer could not find anything wrong with it and returned it without any updates to the software or replacing the speed sensor.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2019

Loss of power while driving on interstate . Whether accelerating to pass or the need to accelerate in any instance or any time!! in a recent trip via interstate the truck lost power !! if I would have been traveling on secondary roads and attempting to pass , I do not believe I would have made it. Check engine light came on! I brought it to the repair shop and they ran tests on it and said it did code dtcp0016 when deleting the code it would come back!!! I have parked the truck and was told there were numerous complaints to the ntsb on same problems. I bought the truck new and it only has 56000 miles on it an the Ford service said it was out of warranty I believe this is a safety problem that needs to be addressed!!!.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Vehicle runs rough and throws a check engine light. When the engine is warm it runs smoother. After trouble shooting possible problems, it was determined to probably be a sticky valve. It is my understanding, there was a recall on this particular issue. I want to know if this truck was serviced and the issue corrected while owned by the original owner. If yes, it is broken again.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2018

Tl- the contact owns 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while attempted to drive the vehicle, it failed to drive and reversed. The check engine warning light illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that when the gear shifter in drive position, it does not show on the instrument panel the vehicle in drive. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Aw.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2018

I was driving home from the store when the check engine light came on so I connected a code reader and pulled a p0016. Crankshaft/camshaft correlation sensor. I took the truck to a mechanic to find out what can cause this code. After checking out the engine they found that the primary timing chain is stretched causing the play in the engine. This play causes the crankshaft and camshaft timing to be off enough to cause this engine code. This truck has 55000 miles on it and in no way should be having timing chain issues this soon. Clearly Ford has a problem with this timing chain and I should not have to spend $3,500. 00 to have this fixed. This is a growing problem for folks who have these trucks and needs to offer a solution before someone gets hurt.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2017

While trying to accelerate at higher speeds the vehicle shakes and appears to misfire. When this happens the vehicle struggles to accelerate and black smoke appears from the exhaust. This occurs mostly while trying to pass another vehicle. The check engine light appeared in the beginning and the code referenced a problem with one of the ignition coils which was subsequently changed but the problem still existed without any codes appearing.

7 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2017

My v-6 ecoboost engine shudders upon accelerating, loses power, check engine light flashing on & off. This has occurred several times especially when the weather is damp. My truck only has a little over 75k.

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2017

Driving 2011 Ford f150 ecoboost on the highway on a 8 hr trip to reno from las vegas. Went to pass a large truck and experienced shaking and studdering. Had to back off as oncoming traffic was approaching. Had to back off and almost caused an accident in rainy conditions because another vehicle was behind me attempting to pass along with me. This caused swerving and hard braking by many vehicles behind that vehicle. Check engine light flashed but did not remain on. I later replicated this by doing a hard acceleration on a clear stretch of road same studdering and flashing light. Drove conservatively the rest of the way. In reno, I had the truck scanned at an auto parts store. No codes showed. Have not had an issue since. This could have killed people. The internet says this is a known issue to Ford on the early ecoboost engines having to do with faulty intercooler design which gathers moisture then blows it into the cylinders when accelerating. I live in the desert and so have not had this problem until that trip. They (Ford) have never notified me that this is a potential problem. There is a TSB for it but that won't help the large bill for the fix or the safety hazard this condition creates. This needs attention. At the least, Ford should notify owners that the problem exists, that it is a safety hazard and fix at no cost.

9 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2017

Experienced multiple engine misfire events in past year with 3. 5l ecoboost engine. Dec 2015- misfire code p0300. Six spark plugs replaced by napa certified shop at my cost. Aug 2016 - towing 7,000 lb. Travel trailer - engine stutter & power loss going uphill, check engine light came on. Took to local Ford dealer. Diagnosis - cracked spark plug on cylinder 6. Spark plug replaced at my cost. Dec 2016 - under normal highway driving conditions. Accelerated from 65 to approx 70 mph to pass semi - engine stutter & power loss. Check engine light came on & truck began to shake, engine went into limp mode. Had to pull over & slow to 50 mph before power came back. Took to local dealership. Diagnosis - fouled spark plug & bad ignition coil on cylinder 3. Coil replaced under warranty, spark plug replaced at my cost. Feb 2017 - under normal highway driving conditions. Again accelerating from 65 to approx 70 mph to pass another vehicle - engine stutter & power loss. Check engine light came on & truck began to shake, engine went into limp mode. Had to pull over & slow to 50 mph before power came back. Took to same local dealership. Diagnosis - cracked spark plug & bad ignition coil on cylinder 6. Coil replaced under warranty, spark plug replaced at my cost. March 2017 - again, under normal highway driving conditions. Again accelerating from 65 to approx. 70 mph to pass another vehicle - engine stutter & power loss. Check engine light came on & truck began to shake, engine went into limp mode. Had to slow to 45 mph before power came back. Took to same local dealership. Was told that I was now 200 miles outside of extended warranty. They would look at it but it would cost me. Took to autozone for code read - error code p0305 - cylinder 5 misfire. Multiple articles & online forum reports of this issue. Ford appears to be ignoring the issue.

10 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

On hard acceleration like when entering a highway or trying to pass another car it will miss fire continuously thru the acceleration 60-70 mph. Shaking violently and check engine light blinking throwing p0300 codes for misfiring at 47,000 miles changed all spark plugs / coil packs / wires / air filter / 48,000 still misfiring.

11 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2016

While driving on hwy when acceleration the vehicle looses power and I had to pull over and shut off the engine and re-start it, almost causing an accident. Then when driving on normal road conditions and accelerate the vehicle to pass, and the same thing happens, the engine miss fires, looses power and the check engine light is on since the first time it happened. Took the truck to the Ford dealer and they said it was "an ongoing problem with the ecoboost and the air charge cooler". They said the fix is to put a intercooler deflector (piece of plastic over the intercooler), change the spark plugs and do a vehicle software update witch is going to cost around $700 to fix. Outrageous cost for a tune up and a piece of plastic for something they know its a "ongoing problem" and don't want to have a recall. This is a safety issue, and they know about it but since the vehicle is out of warrantee I have to deal with it. Wonder how many others have this issue?! this is definitely the only and last Ford I will buy. This does not guarantees that its going to stop it from happening again. With this amount of money I could buy an aftermarket intercooler, do a complete tune up and still have money left.

12 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2016

While driving on interstate, check engine light came on and engine began to shudder very violently while losing power. Was traveling approx. 70mph.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 70 mph, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to first gear and the vehicle slowed down. The check engine light illuminated. The contact exited the highway, turned off the engine, and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who stated that there was a recall. The technician informed the contact that the part needed to be ordered and reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the dealer billed the contact for the repairs, claiming that the repairs were not done through the normal recall process. The contact was assured that he would be reimbursed by the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there was a recall, but stated that the reimbursement would not be issued until the fourth quarter. The failure mileage was 77,000.

14 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle lost power. In addition, the check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,000.

15 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 50 mph attempting to pass a tractor trailer, the engine misfired and the vehicle would not properly accelerate. During the incident, the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the spark plugs were replaced, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,000.

16 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2015

Ford f150 3. 5l ecoboost completely looses power when accelerating in passing gear. Vehicle shutters and bucks severally and does not allow any type of acceleration to be able to exit into slow lane interstate traffic. Normal operation returns after about 1. 5 minutes of coasting and then gently applying accelerator to regain vehicle control. During the recovery time the engine runs very rough as if timing was completely out of sync. I drive 1000 miles per week on interstate 95 and this condition is ongoing. I experience at least 2 or 3 of these episodes per week when I try to accelerate to pass another vehicle. This is a safety concern to me because the vehicle looses power completely and does not recover until 1. 5 minutes later. The check engine light comes on very time this condition occurs. When reading the error codes it only show misfiring of all cylinders (code p0300).

17 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2015

While accelerating on to the highway on a clear, warm, sunny day; the turbo engaged and the truck began to shudder. There was immediate deceleration and the check engine light began to flash. After easing up on the throttle and coasting, the light turned off and the truck began operating normally. This occurred within 1-mile of travel. I was unable to replicate the issue on the remainder of the drive. This is a major safety concern as the speed of the vehicle drops dramatically in a short distance and the vehicle is unable to recover rapidly, leaving the vehicle's occupants susceptible to potentially catastrophic accidents on the roadway.

18 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2015

While driving on interstate my vehicle started to miss fire and lose power. I was hauling a horse trailer going approximately 60 mph with large 18 wheel vehicles when the engine started miss firing and loosing power. Was able to get off interstate and find a local Ford dealership. While driving to Ford dealership the check engine light continued to flash, I finally lost all power and the truck shuddered and flashers automatically went on, was able to get to dealer ship and was diagnosed with bad #4 coil. This was replaced under warranty with a $100 deductible and 6 days later same thing happened, again while hauling horse trailer on interstate, same issues with loosing power, check engine light flashing and truck shuddered. Again was lucky enough to make it to a local Ford dealership, this time #6 coil was diagnosed as being bad. This was changed under warranty with another payment of $100 deductible. Because this happened twice while hauling my horses, and I had another 400 miles to go before reaching my final destination, I could not take the risk of this happening and loosing power while driving on interstates with 18 wheel vehicles at 60 mph and figure I might get lucky a third time and not be killed because an 18 wheeler couldn't stop or avoid hitting me when loosing power from 60 mph to 30 mph, I chose to have the other 4 coils replaced. After getting home I did some research and see this is under investigation with NHTSA and wanted to report the same issue. The other 4 coils I had replaced were not covered under warranty and now I find out that possibly that wasn't the issue but most likely moisture accumulation in intercooler system of truck. I'm concerned I don't have a truck that can be depended upon to keep me and my animals that are being transported in horse trailer safe.

19 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2015

I was driving on a highway, towing a trailer in an area of heavy congestion. When I attempted to accelerate, the vehicle began to shake violently and lost power. The engine was apparently misfiring and was running very rough. The check engine light came on and I pulled off the highway. When I stopped, I put the vehicle in neutral, but left it running. The check engine light went off and the engine seemed to run fine. But ever since then, whenever I attempt to accelerate, the vehicle shakes violently and won't accelerate. This is going to cause an accident! I checked around the internet and this seems to be a common problem with this vehicle, but when I called Ford they told me I would have to pay to have a local dealer run diagnostics. They admitted that they had issued a technical service bulletin to the dealers on a possible fix for the problem, but reading the other complaints on this NHTSA website, the fix did not solve the problem. I've never sued anyone in my life, but I see there is a class-action lawsuit against Ford for this problem. I was hoping that if enough people report this problem that Ford would do the right thing- we shall see. . . .

20 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

Tl-the contact owns 2011 Ford f150. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, there was black smoke coming from the exhaust. The check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle started shaking. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the inter cooler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. Tw.

21 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Driving with my daughter, I took a corner at approximately 25mph and then pushed the gas to get moving and lost all power to the engine, tried putting in low gear but to no prevail, tried again shifting back to drive with nothing happening. At this time we are stuck in traffic with people flying by us and nothing I can do. Finally I shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute. Restarted and the check engine light came on but ran well enough for us to get home. I have not experienced this before and luckily we were close to home. If it happened once it will happen again and probably not the same luck I had this time. Something needs to be done about this problem. Thank you.

22 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Fx2 3. 5l v6 ecoboost: was driving approx. 65 and had to quickly accelerate to pass. The turbos started to kick in and suddenly the engine began to shudder and misfire. Check engine light came on and then went off. Problem occurs during any sudden acceleration.

23 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Truck will have severe intermittent stumble/misfiring on acceleration from 45mph+ in humid, wet or damp conditions. The vehicle shudders violently, bogs down, and check engine light flashes eventually becoming a solid engine light. This involves the engine shuddering when there is acceleration at highway speeds; this is very dangerous when trying to pass vehicles at highway speeds. Have my spark plugs and coils replaced after the following happened in damp and wet weather conditions. Make years seem to involve 2011-14 ecoboost trucks. From thousands of Ford forum posts, the trucks have an intercooler condensation problem that is causing poor performance and spark plugs/coils to fail early. Water and oil vapor/residue condensation is being sucked into the engine. People have had to take it upon themselves to find a solution by drilling a 1/16 hole in the low point of the intercooler driver's side to drain oil/water condensation/residue or install a $400-$500 oil catch can separator which Ford should be offering to owners with this problem. Ford should own this problem and issue an appropriate fix like the oil catch can installation or confirm with its owners that it is ok to drill a weep hole in the intercooler. Not the cheap fixes I have seen like TSB 13-8-1.

24 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2015

The ecoboost engine flashed the check engine light and started blinking and lost almost all power, vehicle slowed to approx 35 mph in the middle of high speed traffic. Ford says the recall never happened because you closed it with satifactory repair results. I am told I have to now pay for this fix since it is after thier 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Yet the vehicle almost killed us. They say they have a misfire , cac fix TSB to correct the issue.

25 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35-40 mph and driving up an incline, the vehicle failed to accelerate and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a retro kit had to be placed onto the turbo boost. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000. Djr.

26 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2014

I accelerated from a stop and the engine lost power and went to idle. The check engine light came on steady and the engine would not accelerate from idle. I turned off the engine and restarted and was able to accelerate past idle. After travelling about 1/2 mile the engine again lost power. I again restarted the vehicle and was able to travel home (approximately 15 miles). All the while the check engine light stayed on steady. A similar event occurred while towing a 30 foot travel trailer while on the I-80 freeway near rawlings wyo. In June, 2014, although that time the engine shuddered violently and the check engine light flashed on and off. After pulling to the side of the freeway the light stopped flashing and I was able to accelerate normally without having to restart the engine. The engine shudder has occurred several times since and has been reported to my Ford dealer (mission valley Ford truck in san jose, CA). The dealer was not able to duplicate or capture any computer defect codes after doing a computer scan.

27 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel was hard to turn and a warning displayed on the panel that read ¿service advance trap". The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was not able to diagnose the failure. In addition, the contact stated that when attempting to pass another vehicle, the accelerator pedal was activated and there was loss of acceleration as the check engine light flashed on and off. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

28 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

While attempting to accelerate and pass slower traffic on the highway, my 2011 f150 (4x4, ecoboost) truck lost almost all engine power, the check engine light started to blink, and the entire truck shook violently. Due to the truck's sudden deceleration without brake lights signaling it, oncoming traffic (including a large tractor/trailer) approached from behind rapidly and everyone had to brake abruptly to avoid a collision. I turned on my hazard lights, pulled the truck to the right shoulder and sat there for a few minutes while I called work to inform them that I would likely have to wait for a tow truck and be delayed. During that call, the engine light stopped blinking and the truck began running normally again. I reentered the highway when traffic was clear and the truck proceeded to run normally until I reached my workplace (roughly 2-3 more miles on the highway and about 5 miles through the city). A less severe instance of this occurred months before. In that case, there was a short power lag upon attempted acceleration, the check engine light blinked 2-3 times and then stopped blinking and the truck did not shake at all. The whole episode disappeared as quickly as it appeared after letting off the accelerator for a second or two. I believed it was a one-off thing. After today's much more severe episode, it is clearly not a one-off and obviously has the potential to cause an unsafe situation. Conditions (in central PA) at the time of today's occurrence (7:45am): temp: 69f, humidity: 96%, overcast (not raining), wind: 0mph, truck speed: about 65mph, a/c: on auto set to 72f, load: driver w/ personlal belongings (no extra load).

29 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2014

This is a Ford ecoboost truck that is turbocharged. During a heavy rain on interstate 95 I tried to accelerate from about 5 mph and the truck lost power and barely moved. After about 30 seconds the truck regained power and moved ahead. There were 2 other instances on this trip also during rain. . The second time the check engine light came on and stayed on. Upon returning home I searched the internet and found out I am not alone in this. There have been 3 TSB's to effect a repair. I made an appointment with the dealer. The engine code was a misfire on cylinder #6. TSB 13-08-01 was applied and I was billed $255. 66. This problem needs a recall and repairs made before someone is badly hurt. I was nearly rear ended on the interstate. The problem is high humidity condenses in the intercooler (cac) or charge air cooler as Ford calls it. Then a sudden acceleration causes the condensed water to enter the engine grounding out the spark plugs on the left side of the engine causing a loss of power and stall. This has also been known to damage the left catalytic converter. Why must I pay to fix a design flaw? Ford needs to recall all of these trucks and repair them. This is not a mileage based problem but is inherent in all of them. During the right conditions it will happen.

30 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

As I was merging onto the highway, I had to accelerate to avoid a semi who was approaching in the right lane. I hard accelerated, but the truck started shaking and the check engine light began flashing. I had lost all acceleration and was forced to put my flashers on and merge to the break-down lane to avoid being run completely off the highway. The truck shook violently while in 6th gear and I had to manually shift to 5th gear to stop the truck from vibrating apart. Less than 10 minutes later (while driving down the highway in 5th gear) the check engine light turned off and the truck was able to be shifted back into 6th without any vibration. This lack of acceleration is extremely dangerous and has happened more times than I can count. Above was only an explanation of the last occurrence. The truck has been serviced (under warranty) where issue was discussed with Ford, but they were unable to "reproduce" the problem. . .

31 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2014

While attempting to pass a slower vehicle on a two lane road, my truck lost all power and the check engine light began blinking. I was in the on-coming travel lane adjacent to the vehicle I was passing when the incident occurred. The incident nearly caused an accident as the vehicle I was passing slowed down when I lost power an I was unable to immediately get over. I coasted with a rough running engine to the shoulder and shut off the engine. When I restarted it a few minutes later it ran a little rough and the check engine light remained on. Research shows that this is a know issue for this make model with the ecoboost engine. The Ford dealership, while having a TSB in place for the issue, did not notify me of the issue and will not cover the cost of the recommended service under either the power-train warranty or my Ford extended warranty (bumper-to-bumper has expired). This is a huge safety issue and this should be a recall from Ford to fix these issues and they apparently will not take the initiative to do so on their own. The incident occurred in southwestern missouri on a day in which it had been raining off and on.

32 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2014

Driving down the highway at 75 mph for an extended period of time in high humidity. Pushed the pedal down to pass a couple trucks going up a mountain and the engine begain misfiring and studdering. There was loss of power and vehicle went into limp mode with flashing check engine light. Failed to passed the trucks causing a dangerous condition by producing unexpected results. This problem is detailed in Ford's TSB 13-8-1. I believe that this is a dangerous condition and a recall should be issued for this condition.

33 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2014

As I was merging onto highway 694 north, I had to accelerate because of a semi approaching me from behind, I gave the truck full throttle but the truck started shaking and the engine felt like it quit or just had no power left. The truck struggled to reach 55mph, and within seconds I almost got rear-ended and almost ran off the highway, do to the fact that my truck had no power. After I merged onto the highway the truck shook violently for about 3 miles while my check engine light was flashing. During this time it felt as though my truck had lost 50% of its power.

34 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

I went to pass another vehicle and the engine bogged with all loss of power. It was the second time this happened. The check engine light came on and engine shuddered and would not regain power until I stopped the truck and shut it off then re-started it. The first time this happened the check engine light went off and when I took it in to the dealer they could not find any issues when the diagnostics were run. The second time it happened, the check engine light came on and stayed on. Truck is currently at the dealer and I am waiting to hear their findings.

35 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-150. While driving 65 mph, the engine stalled. The check engine light illuminated when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the spark plugs failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred numerous times. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,502.
