On April 3 ,2015 I was driving my truck when I went to turn left I lost all steering and almost hit another car. I immediately took the vehicle to hoffman Ford when on 4/5/2021 they did a test. I was contacted and was told that it was due to a software update needed. I was charged for the update and when I contacted Ford they told me sorry there is no recall and basically nothing was going to be done. This is very dangerous and needs to be addressed quickly. I could have been seriously injured or injured someone else. I don't know what would have happened if I would have been pulling my camper. I can understand a a part going bad but an update. . So now we are charging for software updates and risking lives of others.
Problem started before 100,000 miles. 2011 Ford F-150 currently has 230,000 miles and the issue is getting more severe. The steering is "sticky", there is resistance when you attempt to turn the steering wheel. Letting go of the wheel the vehicle remains in the stuck position and does not automatically return to a neutral steer position. With minor resistance you need to give the wheel a little jerk or two to get the vehicle's wheels to unlock and respond. Lately there are increased incidences where the steering wheel severely sticks and needs a strong tug to unlock. The strong tug causes the vehicle to overcompensate when the steering breaks free requiring a second jerk of the wheel to keep control. Early in the history of this problem the sticking was worse when turning to the left, but now the issue is most severe when turning right. I'm not sure, but the situation may be exacerbated if breaking while attempting to turn the steering wheel. At worst it's dangerous, at the least it makes for tense driving. The problem comes and goes and seems random. A few days ago, for the first time a "service power steering" warning displayed. At a Ford dealer they diagnosed the problem as a "weak" battery. The cca (cold cranking amps) 850 battery was only outputting a cca of 575, volts of 12. 41. They replaced the battery, cleared all diagnostic fault codes, and pronounced the problem fixed. Soon after leaving the dealership and sticking resumed, nothing sever, but clearly still sticking. Later I experienced a sever sticking incident. This is not the first time that I've gone to a dealership for help with this problem. A while ago a Ford service rep suggested battery terminal corrosion could cause the problem. The terminals were corroded, I cleaned the negative terminal, replaced the positive and the steering issue noticeably improved but did not terminate.

Vehicle will lock the steering wheel while driving if rotated to make a hard left turn. Once the steering wheel is locked, it takes a tremendous amount force to unlock the wheel. This manouver will only happen while the vehicle is in motion, posing a serious safety concern for the driver and occupants of the vehicle.

While driving on highway 395 near susanville CA, electronic steering caused truck steering to lock while driving. Almost caused head on collision.
The steering is acting stiff while driving.
Steering sticks, very dangerous!!!.
As you are driving the slightest bump makes the steering hard to keep vehicle from swerving . The hotter it is outside the more difficult it is to maneuver .
I was driving at about 45-50 mph and turning left on a large 90 degree curve on the highway and the steering wheel would not return to center without much effort. The truck made a sudden unresponsive move into the oncoming traffic, as I was trying to straighten out the vehicle. I got the truck to respond to a safe area. Very dangerous.
The steering sticks in spots, very jerking when trying to steer. Once when turning to the left, had wheels turned all the way to the left and steering locked up, for a moment I thought I was going to have to have it towed. Again cannot make smooth corrections and slight turns without jerking the truck do to steering malfunction. Very dangerous. And of course the truck is in motion, on city streets, highway, and turning. Below you want a specific date, is does this constantly whenever I drive it.

Driving in a strip mall the steering locked up and a code stating power steering assist fault warning came on. I had to forcefully steer into a parking space to get out of the way from thru traffic. I turned off the engine and restarted the truck and it reset the warning. I was able to drive to an oreillys where they were not able to help me. The steering locked up again at oreillys. I had to call a nephew to help me with truck to a shop to see what the problem was. Three same code came on. There should be a recall for this issue. It is very dangerous.
Right after we purchased the vehicle it started sending signals for error codes. Taken to shop cleared codes ,started again a week later. Now the electric steering system has gone out. No warning just stopped working. The vehicle has 91037 miles on it.
While turning the power steering would get hard to turn. This would happen about once a month. While turning you could feel a tight spot where it was hard to turn then it would loosen up then become tight again. The truck is currently in the shop getting a new power steering unit put in.
Driving down the highway at 70 mph with no other previous indications the steering wheel jerked hard to the right then the power steering was gone. The power steering fault message and service advancetrac message were displayed on the message center. I pulled to the side of the road and attempted a shut down and restart. The service power steering now message was then displayed.
The steering locked up while my husband was traveling on the highway. He had to break hard to avoid crashing into a jersey barrier. The steering unlocked in the nick of time. Since then the steering intermittently freezes causing him to manipulate the steering sharply to the right then back to left. We brought the truck to Ford and was quoted $1700. 00 for a new steering rack. This should be recalled as there is not preventative maintenance that can be done to prevent this.

I was driving at 70mph on the freeway with my family in the truck. This section of the road is described as an "s" curve. While entering into the first curve the steering wheel became difficult to control. It was intermittently changing from stiff to soft and back to stiff. So at times I had to fight to hold the steering wheel in position, but fearing that if I turned it too hard it could reach a soft section of control and slam my family into the brick wall. This section of the highway is 3 lanes each direction, and this was during rush hour. With so many similar complaints, I don't understand why there has been no recall to address this potentially deadly problem. This time my family and I were lucky.
Intermittently the steering wheel will tighten at low speed in reverse. Steering assist fault appears on the dash. Nearly impossible to steer once this occurs. Happened pulling out of the driveway twice today in reverse.
No power steering. Vehicle was stationary.
Lower steering shaft universal joints freezing causing extremely hard steering.
While driving the truck on the city road I made a u- turn and the steering skipped. I drove it the next day on the city road and the steering got worse and the turn blinkers failed to come on. Then 2 days later, while parked, I attempted to back out of the drive way and the steering is completely gone and squeals insistently. The truck is equipped with a epas (electronic power assist steering) system which has failed. In doing research on line, there is a consistent problem with the epas system and I am sure I'm not the only complaint. If this is a known issue, then it should be addressed as soon as possible. My truck is now sitting in my driveway undrivable.
Just after entering a highway, I noticed I had no power steering at all (with dash displaying "power steering assist fault". . . . Had this happened just minutes earlier, I could have gone off a cliff. I pulled over and shut it off. I restarted truck and was able to drive it home at a very slow speed in case I lost p/s again. What the heck Ford!!.
For several months I have been having trouble with the electric power steering. The steering wheel will stick and be very hard to turn. I googled the problem and found out there are issues with other 2011 vehicles with electric power steering. The problem comes and goes. I don't know when the power steering will go out completely but it seems like it could potentially cause an accident. There is currently no recall and the Ford dealer wants a lot of money to fix the problem.
Power assist steering just goes out while driving at highway speeds.
My eaps (electric assisted power steering) seems to be acting up. The issue doesn't occur all the time but when it does its hard to turn the wheel left or right then turn it back straight when making a turn. I have mechanical background and ran a diagnostic to see if was a sensor but nothing comes up. I also have viewed some online forms and it seems other people have the same issue. I will provide the link for a site that I found others talking about the same issue. I previously owned a 2010 Ford escape and I remember having a power steering recall with that. From my experience in the automotive field I know some vehicles have the same issue as others. No accidents have happened for me but to avoid them I thought I should report this in the event this is a recall. . Read more...
Steering sticks. When driving and changing lanes or turning on sharp curves, it feels as if the power steering briefly goes out. While trying to change lanes at a gas station this past weekend, steering briefly was stuck causing me to almost hit a neighboring vehicle. It appears carcomplaints. Com has 320 complaints about the same issue. I did take it to a Ford dealership after a previous issue several months ago and they confirmed the issue.
