1 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2020

Brake fluid leaking into the brake booster, audible chime, message center alert, brake warning on the instrument panel. This happened when we were backing out of the driveway and pulling into a parking spot.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

Brake fluid leaked from the brake mastercylinder into the brake power booster. Once the brake fluid level in the mastercylinder reached a high enough level, brake fluid was sucked through the vacuum lines into the intake and into the engine, where presumably it filled up the cylinders. This occurred both while in motion and stationary, I suspect it only occurred while the engine was running and a vacuum was on the vacuum lines.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2020

The brakes went out on my 2013 F-150, the master cylinder leaked brake fluid into the brake booster. I was driving and went to stop at a stop sign and the brake pedal went straight to the floor I was lucky there wasn't a vehicle in front of me or I would have hit it. I pulled into gas station and got dot 4 brake fluid and filled up the reservoir, the indicator light showed 98% full. I drove couple blocks home and went to stop and the brake pedal went straight to the floor again (I was lucky I did not go thru the garage).

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2020

On June 3, 2020, my son and I were in my 2013 Ford F-150 driving west on I-94. My son was driving. An alarm sounded then a message appeared on the dashboard about an issue with the brakes. I don't recall the wording. We had driven about 25 miles from home with approximately 35 miles to our destination. We continued on and I got out and my son remained in the truck for about an hour. He then got out and looked under the truck and there was no liquid under the truck. I returned to the truck and we headed home on I-696 then I-94 with no issues. The brake message on the dashboard was lit. When we exited I-94 at the marysville, michigan exit we had a complete and total brake failure. No brakes! my son stepped on the emergency brake forcefully and was able to slow the truck down enough to make the turn off the exit ramp and on to gratiot road. He ran through the stop sigh there in making the right turn on to gratiot road but thankfully no traffic was right there at the same time. We drove the additional half mile or so to our house and parked the truck. We checked the brake fluid level and it was empty. We then drove my son's car to auto zone and bought a quart of brake fluid and poured it in to the F-150. After a couple hours we checked the brake fluid level and it was empty. There was not a drop of fluid on the cement driveway under the truck! we called marysville tire and auto, inc. And drove the truck the less than half mile to their location. They put in a new master cylinder at a cost of $519. 04. I called Ford motor owner relations and made a report (case #26860820) on June 19, 2020. Research shows me that other F-150s have been recalled for replacement of a master cylinder and I want you folks to know of my experience. There has never been any fluid leaks under my truck since I purchased it in 2014. Thank you.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

My truck has a 5. 0 motor but is experiencing the exact same thing as this recall that only affects trucks with a 3. 5 motor. I have to refill the reservoir about once a month whether I am driving it or not. Nhtsa campaign number: 16v345000 manufacturer Ford motor company components service brakes, hydraulic potential number of units affected 225,012 summary Ford motor company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 F-150 vehicles manufactured August 1, 2013, to August 31, 2014 equipped with 3. 5l engines. The master cylinder rear cup seal may roll, resulting in brake fluid leakage from the primary reservoir into the brake booster.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

Got into my truck this morning and brake pedal went to the floor and in the display it showed low brake fluid. I filled up the reservoir and pumped brakes and they were good so I drove down the road about 15 miles and pedal went to the floor again and the display said low brake fluid. Got vehicle back to house and filled it back up with brake fluid and pumped brakes and no leaks but still losing fluid. Checked online and found Ford had a recall of the brake reservoir leaking fluid into the booster but it was for August 2013 and my truck was made in June of 2013 so I didn't get a recall. Dealership confirmed this is what's happening to my truck. Ford needs to take a look at this and include more vehicles in this recall before someone gets killed because their brakes fail.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the brake fluid warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact of NHTSA campaign number: 16v345000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The mechanic stated that the brake fluid leaked into the master cylinder. The contact called an unknown dealer, but they were not able to assist. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 42,000.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2018

While moving at speed below 10 mph, but using the brake at times, my "low brake fluid" warning indicator came on after driving only 200 yards. Even after filling the brake fluid container, it again came on after only about 500 yards. I carefully took the truck to my local Ford dealer who found that the master cylinder was leaking fluid into the brake booster. This is identical to the Ford recall #16s24. However Ford says that my VIN is not among the recall list, but obviously the recall should be extended to include my vehicle that exhibits the identical recall that Ford describes.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2018

On 6-26 of this year 2018, we got into my truck to go to Tuesday night church service. And as I was waiting for the garage door to open, I placed my transmission in reverse put my foot on the brake pedal. As I did, the pedal went all the way to the floor. I immediately put my transmission in park. The next day I had it towed to a garage for repair. The master cylinder had failed and all the brake fluid had leaked into the booster. The vehicle was repaired with new Ford parts but I am afraid to drive it even though the brakes are now working fine again for fear they could again fail and someone could get hurt or killed.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2018

While driving Saturday morning around 7 am on may 26, 2018 my brake fluid light came into the dash. When I pressed on my brakes I noticed there was not much resistance when pressing then the pedal went to the floor. I was first on rt37 in rhode island heading towards cranston when I noticed the light and exited immediately when I then found that my brakes were no longer working. Per my mechanic -the master brake cylinder is leaking fluid into the brake booster depleting the break fluid in the primary reservoir minimizing braking capabilities. After learning what the problem with my truck was I researched any recalls. Per the NHTSA the same issue already recalled on may 26 2016 for 271000 of the same truck make model and year. Ford is denying that my personal vehicle is involved in the recall. The truck has all maintenance required and approximately 53000 miles, far under the estimated time a problem like this should arise.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2017

The brake master cylinder reservoir is losing brake fluid that is leaking into the brake booster, causing loss of brakes. We were informed, by our goodyear service provider in our community as we do not have a Ford dealership, that there is a recall# 16s24 for Ford F-150 2013-2014 trucks with this specific and exact issue of brake fluid leaking into the brake booster, however our truck was made on July 18 and the recall date is for vehicles made between Aug 1-Aug 31. I feel this is a case of complete negligence on Ford's part, as our vehicle is the same make, year, model and displaying the exact problem that the recall is for, yet they say it does not fall in their recall details, so it is not their responsibility. They are fully aware of this extremely unsafe issue with our vehicle, have a recall out, but because ours was technically made two weeks before the Aug 1st cutoff date, they will not provide assistance and it is now our out of pocket responsibility. I am completely beside myself on the negligence and irresponsibility we are experiencing and receiving from Ford/the Ford recall department.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2017

While driving down highway at 45 mph the brake warning notice chimed and low fluid warning displayed in the dash information panel. I immediately pulled off main road onto a smaller road and then into a parking spot (took about 1 minute). Just as I pulled into the parking space, the brake pedal went to the floor and the truck barely came to a stop. For the record, it is a certified pre-owned 2013 F-150 fx4 eco-boost with just under 50,000 miles on it. Puzzled, I popped the hood to check the brake fluid and found only 1/2 inch left in the reservoir. This made no sense since I had just filled the windshield fluid a few hours earlier in the morning and noticed that the fluid level for the brakes was about 1/4 inch below the max fill line. I had to call my wife for a ride to the nearest auto parts store to get brake fluid. While I waited I checked the entire truck for brake fluid leaks but did not find any. After returning with the fluid, I filled the reservoir to the max fill line hoping the brakes would return to normal but thinking there might be a leak somewhere. After starting the truck and trying the brake pedal, I found that the brake pedal still only goes all the way to the floor and there is no pressure. I have concluded that the master cylinder must not be working. Lucky for Ford my 2 year old daughter and 10 month old son were not in the vehicle at the time and also lucky that I did not hit anyone or anything. I am very angry and also concerned. This is a family vehicle, working brakes are not negotiable.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving 45 mph, the master cylinder rear cup seal fractured and brake fluid leaked into the brake booster. The failure occurred on a consistent basis. The brake light illuminated until brake fluid was added. The failure occurred on July 10 2017. An independent mechanic stated that the master cylinder needed to be replaced. The failure was identical to the failure listed in NHTSA campaign number: 16v345000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer advised him to contact the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was 57,193.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving about 10 mph, the brake pedal was soft and exhibited an uneven amount of pressure. There was no warning indicator. The vehicle was taken to the dealer gary smith Ford, 1 beale pkwy, fort walton, FL, where it was diagnosed that the brake master cylinder leaked brake fluid into the brake booster. The technician also stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall and provided a case number to the contact. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was about 93,000.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2017

Brake master cylinder failure, causing brake fluid leakage into the brake booster. Interestingly, there is a recall for this exact issue in certain 2013-2014 F-150's (submission date : may 23, 2016 NHTSA recall no. : 16v-345 manufacturer recall no. : 16s24). My VIN happens to not be included in the recall. It looks like Ford may have forgotten to add some trucks to the recall. If you ask me, it's no coincidence that my truck was purchased within the years of the recall, and had the exact same failure as the recall. Unfortunately, tomorrow (July 11, 2017) I will pay ~$1050 to get this fixed, when it should have been included in the recall.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

I was leaving work, as I drove off onto the street in odessa, texas the vehicle seemed normal for 10 mins. All of sudden the first brake I took the brake light came on at a stop sign. I pulled over because my brake pedal slid all the way down to the floor, as a result of this my vehicle was unable to stop. I got off the truck and checked the break fluid reservoir and it was empty. I drove my vehicle to the closest convenient store to purchase brake fluid. I bought two containers and poured into the reservoir and as I drove off, the vehicle seemed to be working for a little while and the light came on again. I drove to the closest mechanic shop; I spoke the mechanic and explained to him what the problem was. He checked for leaks and did not find any he then made a thorough check into the brake booster. He found that the fluid was entering the brake booster. Not a good sign he stated. Upon arrival to my residence, I looked up Ford motor recalls and I learned that these 2013-2014 Ford f150 vehicles had recalls to replace brake master cylinders due to brake fluid leaking from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster. The Ford motor company recall was issued back in may 25, 2016. However, I have yet to receive a notice.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2017

Sudden failure of brake master cylinder without warning during normal driving in the city. This brake failure caused me to drive off the road in order to avoid colliding with stopped vehicles. This is the exact issue that is included in recall # 16s24, however this recall does not currently include my vehicle. The brake master cylinder suddenly leaked all fluid into the brake booster as described in recall # 16s24 causing the brakes to stop working completely, even with the pedal completely depressed. I am confident the same defective part/seal/assembly that is included in the recalled vehicles was installed on my truck, causing the same issue when the part failed. Ford has denied helping me with this issue, and I have a bill from downtown Ford in sacramento, CA in the amount of $1009. 35 for the repairs related to this defective part.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2017

The truck was parked, when I started the truck the low brake fluid light came on and the paddle went to the floor. Added brake fluid and the same result, low brake fluid light came back on and the pedal went to the floor. There were no signs of fluid leak under the truck. Had it towed to Ford dealer. They stated I needed master cylinder and brake booster replaced.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2017

Brake fluid leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2016

Driving home from a camping trip with my son, I applied the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor at the same time the "low brake fluid" warning light came on. My truck did not stop, to prevent an accident, I had to slow my truck using my parking brake, an extremely dangerous procedure. I attempted to pump the brake pedal to possibly get more pressure in the brake lines, but that did not work. The vehicle became un-driveable and had to be towed. I examined the brake fluid reservoir and saw there was no fluid. The following day, I had my truck towed to the dealer and the following day after the service tech examined it, he said the brake fluid had leaked from the master cylinder to the brake booster. The dealer replaced the master cylinder and brake booster. Luckily, I was not going at highway speeds when this brake failure occurred or my son and I could have been seriously injured.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2016

Brake fluid leaked from caster cylinder to the brake booster causing a sudden and almost complete loss of braking ability. Almost caused serious accident.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2016

2013 Ford F-150. Consumer writes in regards to brake fluid leaks from brake master cylinder into brake booster and caused brake failure. The consumer stated the vehicle experienced the same failure as described in safety recall fore certain Ford f150 breaks. The consumer requested to be included in the recall and that she and her warranty company should reimbursed for the repairs. The break master cylinder was replaced.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2016

While driving the vehicle the low brake fluid light came on and then immediately after the light illuminated the truck experienced a complete brake failure. My foot went all the way down to the floorboard while pressing the brakes. The master cylinder was completely empty when we parked the vehicle. We replaced the brake fluid back into the master cylinder and within two minutes of pumping the brakes the master cylinder was empty and the low brake fluid level light came on again. We investigated under the vehicle but could not find any sign of the brake fluid leaking under the truck. We used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and brought it to the Ford dealership.

25 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2016

I drove the vehicle to the store this morning and there was no problem with the brakes. When I left the store and started the vehicle I got a message that said brake fluid is low and when I pressed the brake it went straight to the floor with no resistance. I had to pump the brakes several times to stop the vehicle from moving as I was attempting to back out of a parking space. I got it to stop however when I pressed the brake again it went straight to the floor again. I then turned the vehicle off and called for roadside assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealership (it only has 11000 miles on it) and they advised me that the master cylinder was defective and was leaking fluid into the brake booster.

26 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2016

As I came back from dropping of the kids at school, 06 June, I was driving into the house complex when the breaks failed. The truck would not stop. I used the emergency break to slow down the vehicle. Once I stopped I then proceeded to drive the vehicle to my drive way using the emergency break. I was lucky it was not busy. I contact Ford to see about the problem. Was told the recall was not going to come out till July. Ford got me in contact with the nearest dealership, viva Ford, to make arrangements to pick up the truck on 07 June. The problem is the fluid leaks into the master cylinder. I was told by the dealership that Ford does not cover rentals. That the dealership will try to help me with a loaner. Now I'm stuck with no vehicle, missed a day of work and still have to wait if a loaner vehicle comes available.

27 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

On 05/03/16 I went to bring my 9500lb RV home from storage. While driving to the lot the truck brakes were fine. After hooking up the RV to the truck and pulling out of the lot the brakes were still fine. But as I approached a traffic light, I pressed on the brakes and nothing was there, no brakes at all. Red lights on the dash was the only warning I got, but not until it was to late. If not for the RV having brakes I would not have been able to stop. I was able to get the RV home. I put fluid in the brake reservoir. I then drove down the street (without RV) with brakes but after the third stop I lost all brakes. I was able to pull into a local repair shop and had them fix the issue. I was told the master cylinder was leaking all fluid into the brake booster, and when the mechanic removed the booster he poured fluid from the booster. Before I left my house I found no wet brakes or fluid in the engine compartment or on the ground. I was told the same by the mechanic. I called my Ford dealership and told him of the issue and he stated because I was outside my warranty (45000 miles) it would not have been covered. He made no menchin of the possible brake issues. I went on the internet to see if others had a similar issue and found out about the investigation. I'm writing you today to let you know this is happening without any warning. I have all the parts and the repair cost me 873. 26. All streets were local streets. Several traffic lights. After I lost braking I was able to stop and enter my residential street by using trailer brakes and the emergency truck brakes. Thank you.

28 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2016

The warning light for low brake fluid came on while slowly moving in traffic. Vehicle was immediately parked as there was a safe place to do so. Brake master cylinder reservoir was checked and had very little fluid. Brakes were almost completely gone and pedal went to the floor. I called roadside assistance to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The dealer found the brake fluid had leaked back into the booster and both the master cylinder and booster had to be replaced. I was fortunate no one was hurt or any crash resulted but I truly hope something is done before we hear of someone being hurt.

29 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2016

Low brake fluid warning then no brakes when traveling after work. Brake pedal to floor with no brakes. Emergency brake used to get home. Brake fluid reservoir empty and no apparent signs of leakage. From other sites on internet this appears to be a common problem with the master cylinder seal leaking fluid to booster. Fluid level normal when checked 3 days previous prior to leaving for a 1,000 mile trip. Will take to Ford dealer 08mar16.

30 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2015

Vehicle had been parked for less than one hour. Returned and started vehicle. Depressed brake pedal to shift and pedal went to the floor and the low fluid light illuminated. No braking action. Stopped vehicle and checked brake fluid level. Reservoir had less than one quarter inch of fluid. Checked under and around vehicle and found no evidence of fluid leak. Added 24 oz. Of fluid to reservoir. Brakes still very mushy with very little braking action. Drove 11 miles very slowly and parked vehicle in driveway. Resevoir again almost empty with no visible leaks. Vehicle towed to dealership. Dealership said they had not heard of this problem before. Appears the master cylinder and booster are both bad. Truck had just rolled over 13,000 mi. When problem occurred. I have read at least 15 similar reports on this problem going back as far as 2011 F-150 vehicles. This is a potentially deadly problem.

31 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Travelling at 60 mph on interstate 5 south bound at 0445 hrs I observed brake lights approximately 1/4 mile ahead. As I applied brakes the pedal was spongy and brake fluid warning light came on. While in heavy traffic the brakes failed. I was able to exit freeway by down shifting and using emergency brake. I got to a local retailer and purchased 1 12 oz bottles of brake fluid and put it in the empty reservoir. After pumping the brakes I checked the fluid level and it was empty again. I purchased 2 more 12 oz bottles and added them to the reservoir. Pumped the brakes and everything seemed fine. Decided to go home (slowly) instead of work. After about 15 miles the brake fluid warning light comes back on. Pulled over and bought two more 12 oz bottles to put into my now empty reservoir. Drove 7 miles to my home and the low warning comes back on. Opened the hood to check brake fluid level and once again it is empty. Looked through engine compartment and the underside of my truck and there are no visible fluid leaks. This is a huge problem to life and limb. I see I'm not the only person with this issue yet nothing as far as I can tell is being done about it. Does someone have to be injured or killed? 60 oz of brake fluid just to drive 22 miles safely is not reasonable by any stretch of the imagination. Fortunately my wife or one of my children weren't using my truck when this happened or the outcome could have been very different. Waiting to hear back from my local dealer.

32 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2015

While backing out of a parking spot, I applied the service brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. The truck continued in reverse, striking a concrete wall. I secured the vehicle and inspected the damage. Under the hood, I looked at the brake fluid reservoir. There was a very small amount of fluid in the bottom of the reservoir. I looked back at the dashboard to see if the brake light was illuminated, it was not. I had the truck towed to the dealership where I purchased (new) it two years prior, gosch Ford in hemet, CA. The service technician said the brake master cylinder and brake booster were bad and that the fluid had leaked back into the booster. Since the truck was out of warranty, the estimate for repair would be $800. The truck has 36,443 miles (443 miles over the basic warranty for brakes). As a small business owner, the truck is used to tow my equipment trailer necessary for work. Without the truck, I don’t work and my business suffers. The dealership refused to submit this to Ford for warranty work stating “Ford is very firm on this issue; even one mile over 36,000 would be refused”. I approved the repairs since I need this vehicle for my livelihood. An hour later, the service department called saying there is a nationwide backorder on the master cylinder and brake booster (go figure), and the parts wouldn’t be available for 5 weeks! so, my truck (the truck I purchased new to ensure dependability, safety and reliability) sits at the dealership waiting for the replacement parts for an apparent common brake failure problem. Since they are replacing the defective parts with new (hopefully not defective) parts, I will cringe each time I step on the brake pedal. An internet check of this problem revealed others with the exact same situation. Why is there no recall? this is a huge brake failure issue.

33 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2015

I lost all pressure in the brake system. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor. . When I checked the brake reservoir, it was empty. I was unable to find any signs of leaking brake fluid. I refilled the reservoir and was able to restore pressure by pumping the brakes. A few minutes before total brake failure, I was in motion in an urban area, towing a boat equipped with surge brakes. I was travelling down a steep hill could feel the brake pedal travelling closer to the floor. I've had no problems since but routinely check the brake reservoir to ensure there is sufficient brake fluid I didn't report it until now, when I heard that other f150 owners had experienced the same problem.

34 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

While driving on freeway a "low brake fluid" warning light came on the dash. I tested brakes and they felt ok at that point. After driving several more miles the brake pedal took more pressure to slow down the vehicle and by the time I stopped the brake pedal went to the floor. I checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was empty. I found no brake fluid leaking under the vehicle. I filled the reservoir with new brake fluid and after driving 5 miles the brake warning light came on again. I stopped and checked the reservoir and it was empty again. After filling the reservoir again I took the vehicle into a Ford dealer. They told me the master cylinder had failed and leaked the brake fluid into the brake booster unit and caused it to fail as well. The service adviser said they had 3 other F-150 trucks come in with this same issue. The fix is to replace the master cylinder and the brake booster unit with new parts. He claims the new parts have been re-engineered to fix the issue. I checked the internet for this problem and found many others have had the same issue with at least 2011, 2012, 2013 Ford F-150 trucks, some never received the "low brake fluid" light before the brakes failed. This is an extremely dangerous safety issue as the brakes become unusable when this occurs. I tow a large trailer on some steep grades and this could be a disastrous issue as you can imagine. I believe this should definitely trigger an immediate recall to fix this very dangerous issue.
