Recently had my truck go throught a inspection check at a professional automotive shop and it was diagnosed with right and left exhaust manifold leaks. This issue is causing exhaust manifold gases to leak into my cabin and power loss while engine is running. Reason for leaks are due to exhaust manifold bolts breaking and warped exhaust manifold.
Exhaust manifold bolts broken and warped manifold.
At approximately 80,000 miles, I began to hear a chirping or air whistling sound when lightly to moderately accelerating. I began to investigate the noise using the internet where I located videos from other F-150 ecoboost 3. 5 engine owners who were experiencing the same exact senario as I was. They had found that the drivers side and/or passenger side exhaust manifolds were leaking exhaust. The tell tale sign is a darkening of the area around the rear of each manifold. The manifolds were warping from either a design flaw or material failure at the rear and also breaking the mounting fasteners. I have determined both of my manifolds are leaking exhaust from the noises coming from the engine compartment while driving. This may trigger a safety inspection failure if found due to leaking exhaust as well as an emission test failure if required by the state where the owner resides. Also the release of carbon monoxide forward of the passenger compartment is a concern especially if the leaks increase in size.
I have both exhaust manifolds warped and leaking.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact called on behalf of her husband. While driving 60 mph, smoke was detected under the hood and the tail pipe. The vehicle was driven to a parking lot where it stalled as flames were detected coming from the engine. A police report was filed. Another motorist had a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire. The contact's husband sustained burns to one of his hands. Medical attention was not received. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 260,000.
Passanger side exhaust manifold bolt as broke off causing an exhaust leak. The vehicle has 59010 miles and is a 2013. Ford wants over 1600 to fix said issue. Ford is not willing to accept fault or cover under emissions warranty.
