1 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/20/2020

Vehicle was purchased in 2017. In 2018, occassionally noted that the passenger airbag indicator would switch to off while a passenger was in the seat, with seatbelt fastened. Approached my dealer with the problem, they read codes and found no faults. During a long road trip in 2019/2020, a pattern emerged: when vehicle first started and passenger present, passenger airbag system indicates on. After 20-30 minutes of driving, indicator goes to off. About 50% of the time, unbuckling and retracting passenger seatbelt, then rebuckling, and indicator will come back on. If this fails, truck must have ignition turned off before it will reset and switch airbag on. Have been told by dealership that this vehicle is not part of the 2014/15 recall for issues that match these symptoms. Also told that my expensive extended warranty may not cover a fix (to the main safety system??). . . It is dependent on shop inspection and diagnosis.

2 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/06/2017

This pickup truck, owned and operated by a public utility, was involved in a low speed front end collision on a city street. The incident involved the front bumper of the F-150 making abrupt contact with the rear bumper and tailgate of a Nissan frontier pickup. There were no injuries to the driver of either vehicle and no airbags deployed initially. Immediately after the collision, the truck was pulled over to the side of the road, the ignition was switched off, and the 4-way flashers were turned on. The keys were removed from the ignition and the driver exited the vehicle to exchange information with the driver of the other vehicle. While the drivers were exchanging information, approximately 5 minutes after the collision, the driver side airbag deployed. Within a minute or two after the airbag deployed, the interior of the truck erupted in flames, which were reported to have started in the area behind the front seat console. The inside of the cab was engulfed in flames, and the fire spread to the engine compartment and bed. The local fire department responded quickly, but the truck suffered severe fire damage.

11 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 1999 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

I purchased a 1999 Ford f150 from kings auto mall near cincinnati. The trucks air bag light was on and I did not know what this meant until after I purchased the truck. I had it in the dealers shop to fix the a/c and have other items looked at. They stated that the air bag light was caused by a faulty air bag switch. This is the switch that turns off the air bag when small children are riding in the passenger seat. The dealership had placed a sticker on the passenger window stating that the truck had been safety checked. But yet I purchased a truck that could have killed my 4 year old if the air bag had went off. The dealership stated that they will only pay for half of the repair for fixing the switch. I don't understand how they could have sold me a truck that had this major issue.

12 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/08/2003

Hood pops unlocked while driving. Seat belts on front seats do not retract fully when unbuckled, hang on floor between seat and door. Upon opening of door, the loose belt loop falls past the door seal area and upon door closure becomes lodged between door and jamb. When vehicle re-entry is made by driver or passenger, and belt is put on, a false tension is achieved by door jamb seal. This leaves up to 10 to 14 inches of loose belt that feels like it is actually tensioned as to protect the occupant. This loose belt slack continues as the belt extends and retracts in normal, non inertia locked mode. Only upon heavy breaking, or forward force by occupant does the belt slip past the lower door jamb seal and extends the belts reach. This can cause a fatality for one of the following four reasons. First, on frontal impact, the belt allows the driver or passenger to be thrust forward and either come into undue contact with the dash or steering wheel. Secondly, the falsely tensioned belt allows the driver or passenger to be propelled too close to a deploying front airbag, causing undue frontal contact with airbag which can result in increased injury or death. Thirdly, on pickup truck models equipped with key deactivated front seats occupied by children, the loosening belt can reach the youth passenger seat occupant right into windshield. And fourth, in passenger pickup truck models, with the air bag turned off by key switch, untensioned belt does not restrain a baby / child car seat, likely causing the seat to be rendered ineffictive and possibly more hazardous if it were not used at all. He belt assemblies made for Ford by trw. This condition was evident when vehicle was less than year old , got progresssively worse , first incident fall 1997. I was first titled owner, bought demo. Elbow injury in 2003. I'm a former mi. Lic. Master mechanic . I have tested for this problem in similar Ford vehicles on used car lots and have observed same effect in many Ford F-150's.

13 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2001 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/24/2002

Fluid leak in clutch system, dealer could not find source so he relpaced master cylinder and slave cylinder. Then Feb 21 2003 had same problem. Dealer relaced complete cluch assembly including the slave cylinder. Also at this time they noticed that the air bag switch was not functioning prorerly. This switch had been turned off at time of delivery and was never turned on again. How can this switch fail under this condition? this truck is driven over the road and well maintained. I don't feel that I should be having this much trouble when the clutch is not used as much as if it were used for in town or suburan driving. I feel that this model and year has a faulty clutch and air bag system.
