While backing out of a residential driveway, while turning the steering wheel the right front wheel caught the edge of the curb and had a catastrophic failure of the right front upper ball joint. Wheel and knuckle collapsed under the wheel well. The vehicle is new with 8600 miles on it. While removing the wheel in order to tow it, found there was no torque nut on the balljoint stud. It was transported to a certified Ford dealership where it is being evaluated for repairs. Suspension, steering, alignment, sensors are non operational and damaged. The nut was either never put on, or was never tightened. No prior warnings were given. Had we been driving at speed I have no doubt we would have sustaine major injury or worse. Dealership has reported documentation of the aformentioned problem, and pictures sent to Ford administration with no response yet.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, a knocking noise was heard from the front driver's side wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front driver's side upper ball joint was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the driver's side ball joint needed to be replaced on several occasions because the failure recurred. The failure mileage was 169,000.

I have a 2007 Ford f150 4wd pickup truck. I have 22,000 miles on the truck and just had to replace both front upper ball joints. When I took it to the Ford garage they indicated this is a common failure. My concern is that the failure mechanism if the upper ball joint fails is for the wheel to fold under the vehicle and potentially rupture the brake lines in the process. They indicated this failure would be worse while pulling a trailer. I contacted Ford motor company and they offered no explanation or assistance as the truck is off warranty.

1. As I was leaving the wal-mart parking lot the right front upper ball joint on my 1995 Ford F-150 4x4 broke apart and disabled the vehicle. The ball joint manufacturer apparently did not put grease in the joint when it was manufactured. 2. I do not know how often this part fails on the Ford F-150. It failed on my vehicle at 62k miles due to a manufacturing deficiency. Fortunately the failure was at parking lot speed. Had it occurred at highway speeds I could have easily been killed and possibly killed others as the vehicle was uncontrollable when the part failed. 3. I had the vehicle hauled to the local Ford dealer and they replaced it at a cost of over $500. Fearing that the left front might also fail I had it replaced for a total cost $1,071. 94. I requested that all parts be saved and provided to me and have all that were provided. I discovered upon examination that they did not include the rust pitted ball joint in the parts they provided me but the torn open joint assembly and rest of the parts are included. The Ford dealer who made the repairs and the president of Ford motor company through his representative have refused to provide any warranty on this defective part as there is currently no recall in place on this vehicle for this part. I do not know if this occurs often but they had the parts in stock for the right front repair. When I asked for the left front to be repaired they had to order those parts in. I have documentation of this matter and my attempts to get the repairs covered under warranty. I have driven many Ford vehicles over the past 45 years in excess of 100k miles (one over 200k miles) and have never had up upper ball joint fail. This is clearly a manufacturing defect and constitutes a danger to any driver of the F-150.

While driving on a local highway I felt my trucks front end vibrate then start to wobble. Stoped at a traffic light I could smell the odor of hot metal. I pulled in a parking lot got out of my truck andwalked around the front of my truck. I could feel a lot of heat comming from the left wheel. There was an auto service dealer open below where I pulled off the highway. I left my truck to be checked out. The next day I was told I needed upper ball joint balljoint assembly on both sides ,lower control arms on both sides and also upper contrl arms. The shop keep the old parts. I was lucky because one hour before this I was on interstate 75 in traffic.
