Ford F-150 owners have reported 116 problems related to gasoline engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
1999 Ford f150 5. 4l v8 blew out the number four (4) spark plug located on the passenger side in the rear. Personal research has told me that this is a very common problem due to a "factory defect" (Ford motor company does not admit this) of not having enough threads in the head to hold the plug. Recommended repairs include replacing the head, which is $2,500 job. I am using a thread tapping dye with an insert to fix this problem. It is still not put back together at this time. In my opinion, Ford needs to recall the heads on the 5. 4l motors for any and all years that have had these blow-out problems.

My 1998 Ford F-150 only had 76,000 miles on it and was well-maintained. On 12/30/2007. It had run a little rough at start up for about two weeks prior to 12/30/2007. Then on that day a loud knock in the engine. I took it to a mechanic who said that there was a history of the 4. 2 engines having problems. And I would have to replace the engine. I have not done anything with it yet. I believe that Ford should stand behind this engine. If they know it was a design problem to start with.

Ford recommends changing the spark plugs on my 2004 f150 5. 4 3-valve at 100,000 miles. Mileage was getting close so I tried to change them. Unfortunately Ford did not tell owners that there is a huge problem with the spark plugs breaking-off in the cylinder causing a massive repair bill. Engine had must be removed to take out broken plug. Ford did produce a TSB, but did not inform owners that this routine service should be done by dealer. Upon checking internet, there are scores of reports of the plugs breaking when both owners and dealers attempt the routine maintenance.

Without any warning the v-8 5. 4 engine started missing, dealer in winslow az said they had a lot oftrouble with that engine shooting the spark plugs out. Two of the plugs were loose , one apparently more than the other. Replacing plugs did not help. Some reports of others tell of this going on since before 97. Some with fires. I wonder why this situation has gone on so long and still not fixed.
01 f150 supercrew 5. 4l with less than 41,000 miles. Right rear spark plug blew out of head also breaking coil mounting bracket. Dealer removed engine to attempt repair and found spark plug hole would not accept heli-coil. In process at this time trying to locate a new head. This truck has been well taken care of and with less than 41,000 miles, how was this possible! I have been a Ford driver most of my life. But I will think twice before buying another Ford. This problem is well documented and should be repaired under a recall.
On my Ford F-150 truck the #3 head blew the spark plug out. This resulted in me needing to tow the vehicle and have a heli-coil done to it. I have read numerous complaints of the same thing being reported over and over at comsumeraffairs. Com I also know of 7 other people within the des moines, iowa metro who have had the same problem. It cost me approximately $500. 00 plus reantal vehicle expenses, which I haven't recieved the complete bill for yet.

I purchased a used 1998 Ford f150 from car max in las vegas. I also purchased car max's extended warranty. I took the truck to jiffy lube for an oil change and drove it home, a distance of about 1 mile. Jiffy lube did not note any problems when they serviced the truck. The truck would not start the next time I went to use it. Jumping it did no good, the battery was not low. I had the truck towed to car max it was towed on a flat bed trailer, so the wheels never touched the ground. I called car max the next day and they said they had it scheduled to look at the following day. They called me that following day and asked if the truck was smoking when I last drove it. I told them it was not and that it drove fine. Then they told me the engine was blown and continued to act as though I had caused it. On my next day off, I rode my bicycle to car max and checked the truck's odometer against the mileage jiffy lube wrote on my receipt. There were 28 miles put on my truck since the oil change. Car max will not take responsibility, even though they blew the motor in my truck, but deny it. My son had done most of the oil changes on the truck, so I have no proof oil changes were done, so car max denied the extended warranty. I called Ford and I was told there is no such issue on the truck, even though Ford changed the head starting with later 1998 models, due to a faulty design. Their customer service agent was very frustrated with my asking how they can deny an issue, when they put out information to their dealers on steps to take when servicing the f150. She asked what I wanted them to do. I told her I was not asking Ford to replace the motor because I am paying for an extended warranty. But I would like them to contact car max and tell them that the motor blowing up was not my fault, so car max would cover it, as they should anyway. She told me no, because there is no issue with the 1997 and 1998 Ford f150's. Please help.
Have a 1999 f150 that has a fix recorded for the head gasket, but has no recall. Even though Ford knows there is a fault, and should take care of or repay the consumer for fixing, since Ford knows there is a problem.
1999 Ford F-150 spark plugs blowing out.
Ford F-150 2002 5. 4 engine was a Ford certified vehicle. Spits spark plug causing the vehicle to die in traffic. Ford says its no problem, but when you go to the dealership, they know the problem without even raising the hood. Replaced head. Called Ford customer service trying to get information on this problem (customer service lousy non informative about this problem acted like who cares. ). Look at all the other owners with this problem.
Driving at 60 mph, pop, loss of power, noisy motor, stopped, opened hood to find blown #3 plug. Blew coil from mount and damaged insulator.

1 - was driving from tucson, az to my uncle's funeral in riverside, CA. Outside el centro, CA plug blew out of the head on my 2001 Ford f150 supercrew 4x4. I attempted to put another plug in but the threads were gone from the head so I went to the dealership. They took two days to repair so cost me a day of work and my kids an extra day of school. The did a helicoil repair at a cost of $498.
I bought a 1997 Ford xl v-6 4x4 from noller Ford in topeka, KS brand new . I was told this v-6 engine was the greatest thing ever invented by Ford. I noticed that about every oil change I had to top off the coolant. I called topeka Ford about this approximately 6 months after I drove the truck--I was told it was normal for this motor. I took their word. My son is in the military at nellis afb in las vegas nevada. He drove my truck there and called me last night saying the motor locked up. (it has about 112,000 miles on it) I called the las vegas Ford dealership and talked with fernando and he informed me that there was nothing wrong with the Ford v-6---please look into this!!!! I then called a former Ford mechanic and asked him what my son could do---he stated that Ford had many problems with the v-6 and most was due to some head gasket problems (or something like that) and many people have had their engines seize up due to this. I have read several websites with a lot of people having the same complaint as I do---why doesn't Ford step-up? I have bought quite a few Fords but if they choose not to fix this problem, this will be the last one. Some Ford owners have had Ford send them a recall notice for the gasket issue---why haven't I???? my son is due to be deployed to iraq soon and he shouldn't have to worry about what will happen to this truck. He does not have the money to fix it, nor do I---fernando was quick to point out that for $4000 it could be fixed, I asked how he came up with a figure that fast and he refused to answer my question----what does that tell you???--this has happened to other people on a regular basis!!!.
My 2002 Ford f150 harley davidson pickup truck ejected a spark plug while driving on the highway . This is the third incident of failure and am concerned for my safety as the truck looses power while at highway speeds and could cause an accident . In addition the failing plug this time was one right under the fuel rail and the coil was prevented from continuing to pull out by the fuel rail adding concern that it could puncture and cause an engine fire . When contacting Ford they basically took my information and offered no assistance .
I am one of the thousands of Ford owners who have had spark plugs blown out of the cylinder heads while driving. This is a major disgrace that you all will continue to let fmc lie and steel from its customers and deny that there is a problem with there engines. Please do the right thing and make Ford stand up for their mistakes.
Blown spark plug on my 2000 Ford F-150 5. 4 triton. Known to only have half the required threads in the cylinder head for the spark plug, have had neither compensation or a recall. This is very dangerous as it happened to me towing a boat going on to the interstate. Destroyed the plug, the coil pack (cop style) and the intake elbow of my after market intake system. Over $600 in damages.

Was driving on freeway Ford f150 pickup engine blow out the #1 spark plug, second 6 mths ago same engine blow out the #4 rear spark plug near passenger, now have to replace engine very costly.
Ford triton 5. 4l v-8 heads. Aluminum heads are so poorly engineered that they will not retain the spark plugs under normal loads. Over $5,000 in repair costs, Ford refuses to acknowledge any problem.
I have a 1997 Ford F-150 with 60,800 miles on it and the motor started knocking. I took it to the dealership and they told me I needed a new engine. The cost was more than the truck was worth. I had the truck in the shop 3 years ago for a water leak that was coming from the front of the motor. The truck had 36,000 miles on it and the dealership ask me if the mileage was right on the truck. I told them when I bought the truck and the couldn't believe I was having this problem.
I was driving in my 2001 Ford F-150 truck on I-5 and the spark plug blew out of the v8 triton motor and there was a couple of fire balls that came out of the motor area which I was told was the gas vapor catching fire after the plug blew out of the motor lucky that I was able to stop right away and had water to put it out. This is going to kill someone and now I find out Ford has known about this problem for a long time. I took the truck to Ford and they told me it was not covered under my extended warranty and I would have to pay to replace the whole head piece that the spark plug goes into because they could not just put another plug into the motor, they know it's a problem and they are not covering it under the warranties. One of these trucks are going to catch fire and really hurt someone.
I'll have a 1997 Ford f150 for no reason my motor blew a rod I'll read in the internet about a lot of people having the same problem the motor are defect, isn't Ford dealer during anything about it. This is not right I'll went to work in my truck came home from work, 3-hours later started my truck the engine knock continues to bang, I turn it off I was told that the truck blew a rod. This is very on fair I can't afford a another car. Please advise. Thanks you.
The passenger side rear spark plug blew out of the engine head. This truck has 54,000 miles on it and is very well maintained. Repair estimates are in excess of $3,000. 00. This happened in a well traveled area and it was me and not my wife and kids stranded. There is an obvious flaw in the head design that Ford has since rectified. It is outrageous that a $30,000 truck that is well maintained should have this kind of failure 18,000 miles out of factory warranty.
1. Loss of engine coolant 2. Engine damage knocking coolant in combustion chambers, engine knocking loss of oil pressure from defective gaskets, 3 . Ford will not fix problem.
Engine on my 2002 Ford f150 with 88,000 miles blew a spark plug while driving at approximately 45 mph. Causing approximately $2,900 worth of damage. Vehicle was pulled over immediately and towed to the closest repair facility. Mechanic said this is a common problem with the Ford f150 triton v8 engines that Ford won't acknowledge.
I own a 2001 Ford f150 4. 6 lter and at approximately 105,000 miles #3 spark plug blew out of the head. Ford attempted to replace the plug and again it blew out. I fixed it with a helicoil myself as the expense was $3000 for the dealership to fix. Recently with 121,000 miles it was running rough and when the dealership went to replace the spark plugs they dropped something into cylinder #7. The mechanic started the engine and now have an inoperable vehicle that they are refusing to fix.
I have a 97 Ford 150 with a 4. 2 v6 that has hydro locked. I am still making payments on this truck. I have not yet fixed it I am trying to find a good price on a new motor.

4. 2 l engine busting rods.
On two seperate occasions while driving my 2002 Ford f150 harley-davidson pickup there was a loud bang from under the hood then vehicle would barely run. Turns out that I blew a spark plug out of the cylinder head each of the two times. Both times were the right side head and the were the rear two plugs. Seems like a lot of other people are experiencing the same problem but Ford will not acknowledge it. This is a safety issue as it happens whether on the highway or streets.
My98 Ford f150 4-2l motor thew a rod found coolent on the plugs just like the huhdreds of otheres but no one wants to admit to the problom with this motor now its 3k to 4k to fix it I dont know when that will happen but it make a great lawn ornment I hope some one is looking into this thank you for you time.
Spark plug blown. I had the # 3 cylinder coil and fuel injector replaced earlier. Dealer thought it odd both were gone on the same cylinder. I was driving at less than 15 mph when it happened. Ford has a problem with blown spark plugs, they shoud be liable for any repairs.
Fire in engine compartment of Ford F-150. Owner was attempting to drive the vehicle out of the snow where he got stuck. While doing so, the engine compartment caught fire. Fire first see from the driver side cowl. Heavy fire damage to the engine compt.
