Ford F-250 owners have reported 7 problems related to clutch broken (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford f250 sd. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the clutch failed. Upon further inspection the contact noticed that the plastic bushing had failed and the rod was detached from the clutch. The contact went to the dealer, purchased a new bushing and repaired the vehicle himself. The recent failure was the second clutch failure on the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 58,000.

My 2001 f250 super duty had a complete transmission failure at 50534 miles. The mechanics at the transmission shop told me that the one-way clutch had failed in the transmission resulting in the disintegration of the clutch assembly. Out of pocket cost $2805. 82. While speaking to the mechanics I was informed that this is happening all over the country with this particular transmission. Even I know that a transmission is supposed to last longer than this, especially one that is on a "super duty". This is ridiculous and expensive. It is time for a voluntary recall or a class action law suit.

I purchased a Ford F-250 hd crew cab lariat new in 2000 (2001 model). At 52829 miles the transmission completely failed. The repair ticket states that the one-way clutch failed resulting in the disintegration of the clutch assembly. Ford installed a factory rebuilt transmission replacement for 3552. 97$. At 110,000 miles the rebuilt transmission has now failed. Ford refuses to admit that there may be an inherent design flaw in the transmission and instead blames the problem on the fact that the transmission is out of warranty, or owner neglect, or anything they can come up with. An automatic transmission designed to mate to a 7. 3 liter diesel engine should last more than an average of 55,000 miles. I would like NHTSA to further investigate this matter before someone is either killed or maimed by fire from a failed, locked-up, or leaking transmission.
The sprag clutch is breaking across in two sections. The material was made out of a iron/powder mixture. The vehicle was in normal use when the incident occurred. The consumer felt that the repair should be under warranty due to the low mileage.
While driving manual transmission fan clutch failed. Dealer kept the vehicle for two weeks and replaced the fan clutch. The same day fan clutch broke again.
2001 f250 crew cab 4 x 4 auto transmission. Transmission failure at 49,000 miles. Driving along at 45 to 50 miles an hour and transmission loses 2nd and throws/snaps passengers forward. Vehicle has not been off road, all miles are highway. Vehicle has not pulled anything. Ford said they could not repair only replace transmission with a rebuilt transmission for $3100. I had a local transmission repair shop make repairs for $2200. They were told by Ford when ordering parts that the one-way clutch that failed was a new design in 1998. Parts were not available since Ford had since gone back to pre 1998 design. This is clearly a "latent defect" that Ford is/has been award of. I am asking Ford to stand for the cost of repairs or will refer to counsel to file a deceptive trade practice claim against them.
While making a stop by depressing the clutch, clutch did not disengage transmission, and vehicle stalled. Dealer has been contacted. Mechanic said that pilot bearing on pilot shaft is the weak link in the transmission. Pilot bearing failed, caused excessive wear on the pilot shaft which caused the clutch plate to break, which prevents the clutch from disengaging. Part replaced by dealer.
