Ford F-250 owners have reported 6 problems related to transmission gear slipping (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Approximately 3 days ago, automatic transmission slipped briefly, occurred again on 2/22/10. Self-corrected both times. Vehicle was hauling enclosed cargo trailer containing 3 atv's. Parked vehicle and shut off ignition, vehicle was in park. Approximately 3 minutes later noticed smoke from under hood. Fire spread too rapidly for effective use of fire extinguisher. Engine compartment was fully involved upon fire dept arrival, with radiant heat and smoke damage to the passenger compartment. The vehicle is considered a total loss. Upon investigation the fire originated in the engine compartment and most likely was due to failure of the automatic transmission or a component of the transmission.

I have a 2001 Ford F-250 ,diesel, automatic transmission. I was coming off the highway and felt like I was rear-ended, but there was no cars behind me. As I tried to increase speed after my stop, I had no power, and the transmission was slipping badly. I continued on to work and immediately called my mechanic, who referred me to a transmission specialist. I had the truck into him the next morning, and after doing his check of the transmission, he informed me that second gear and overdrive was gone and the transmission would need to be rebuilt. After disassembling the transmission ,he told me the cause was a defect in the Ford transmissions, sprage assembly and direct drum, plus other things that im not an expert at describing. It ended up costing me close to $4000. 00 dollars with the rental car to drive while the truck was in the shop, and ended up having to rebuild the entire transmission. I have talked to a few other transmission experts and some friends that have Ford trucks and they all tell me yes, there is a defect in the Ford transmissions. I also talked with the Ford dealer, who denied ever hearing of this problem. I don't haul anything too heavy, and when I do haul a boat, it isn't real often, I am wondering why I had to pay so much money for a problem that is a defect in Ford transmissions, that everyone seems to be familiar with but Ford.

The consumer purchased a truck from Ford because of a rear child safety restraint. It was a misrepresentation of what they wanted to fit an infant child into. The consumer was unable to place the child in the truck. The consumer purchased the truck because of their newborn child. The manufacturer said that the owner's manual stated one could not place a rear-facing seat in this truck. Other problems consisted abs light illuminated becasue the dealer wired the plow to it, the four wheel drive did not engage, and the transmission was slipping and did not shift properly.

We purchased the most beautiful, 2004 F-250 powerstroke diesel on 4/3/04, lariat pkg,tow/camper pkg from a Ford dealership in kennesaw, GA. It did well for a few weeks, but odd things began to happen, rough shifting of the transmission/decrease in gas mileage/riding roughly. On 6/8, before a trip to florida, my husband took the vehicle for service and to have the other problems checked. The dealership's service dept said they could't find the problem but did mention that the transmission was slipping. We left for vacation the very early on 6/18. On 6/25, in FL, the transmission broke down. Could only get it in one gear, the tow/hauling light came on and stayed on. A dealership there in palm beach, diagnosed-we needed a new transmission. Metal shavings were found in the transmission when it was taken apart. (we also found out that the dealership did not disclose to us the fact that the transmission had already been replaced once, at 17 miles. It had 79 miles on it when we purchased it). A new transmission was ordered and we were stranded another week before it would arrive. On 6/30, my husband picked up the truck but it still wasn't operating properly. About 8pm he called to say the transmission had broken again. Back to the FL dealership the next morning, led to another diagnosis of the computer/processor being bad. That was replaced and the truck has worked somewhat properly since that time. It still has some odd sounds coming from the transmission, the gas mileage has dropped as low as 8. 9 (originally -17 mpg - pulling a camper. ) it still idles roughly so we expect to break again. This truck is on its third transmission & 2nd processor. We are still trying to resolve the issue with the dealership, Ford motor CO. , and automotive grp 1. My sincere thanks to al packard Ford service dept in palm beach CO, FL for their help in diagnosing the problem and for helping these stranded visitors.

On 1999 Ford f250 diesel automatic transmission, sometimes when shifting into second and third gears transmission will slip before going into gear and sometimes when shifting it will "hunt. " this only happens when transmission gets hot. Have tried several times to get help from the dealer/manufacturer with no success.
