1 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2005

While trying to brake at any time the vehicle steering locks up (the pump does not support the pressure for the brakes and steering). After contacting several mechanics this is a Ford diesel common problem and there has not yet to be a correct fix.

2 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

My f350 diesel 4x4 has the steering shut down in traffic, seems like the power steering pump is also the abs brake booster. When the brakes are applied the steering assist stops. With the weigh of the diesel engin it is impossible to turn the steering wheel more than a quarter turn when the brake is applied. I need to roll several feet without brake applied in order to turn, pump replaced @ 20k mi no better. The situations is getting worse. . . No solution in sight.

3 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2005

While driving 5-70 mph consumer lost power steering/braking. Consumer managed to pull over, and had the vehicle towed. Deaalership repaired the power steering and brake components, but the consumer was still having the same problems.

4 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2003

Lost steering and brakes towing a trailer on an off ramp. High way 80 in wamsutter wy. Sudden loss of steering and brakes at the same time seems to be unsafe to me. To happen on a high way off ramp towing a trailer makes it even worse.

5 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

When you press the brake pedal the steering wheel locks up . When you release the brake it release the steering wheel. 2000 Ford f350 superduty diesel has done this since owned truck approx. From 2003 to current.

6 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2001

Steering on my truck was fine for the fifst 35,000 miles and then lost all power steering when stopped with foot on brake or off the brake. I took the truck in to the Ford dealor and was told this is a normal way for this system to work and live with it,I called Ford moter company and they said the same thing. I feel this is a saftey problem as when off road you cant get the truck to turn if there is adverse weather conditions and you must try to turn at low speed or no speed. If it is icy on the road or even on dry pavement if you apply the brakes and try to stear out of a skid say to avoid a crash you cant get the truck to turn due to your foot on the brake. You cant turn in shopping center parking lots to get into parking spaces due to the steering problem. And shame on Ford for selling these trucks that they know have this situation (bulliton 15446) and not telling the consumer that this is a problem with thesuper duty f-series and the excursion and leading you to believe that the truck will function as weel at 5 miles as it will at 40,000 miles. They should be made to fix this problem and to disclose the factory bulliton 15446 to all consumers looking at there product as it affects the drive ability and resale value of the truck.

7 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2001

Tire failed on asphalt, no load, no warning. Total separation , only bead the tire tread left. No road hazard at time. Same as two previous firestones tires, not the same type or year. Electrical system: diesel would die out for a few seconds, then came back on by itself. Loss of steering and all power during lost power or curves and hills. Ford reprogrammed computer after several visits there.

8 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2000

Power steering gets stiff and/or goes out (does not work) when brake is applied while I am driving and/or at a stand still. At times the steering locks up when brake is applied and then comes back gradualy. The turn signal will not stay on while I am driving and will not allow me to turn on if my steering wheel is slightly turned.

9 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2000

Under braking power steering locks up, unable to turn even with excesive force. This has happened many times. Contacted 2 seperate dealers (4 instances) and Ford customer service. There is not a problem or this is normal.

10 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2000

When applying brakes hard, the power steering goes out. Took vehicle to dealer twice, dealer said it met specifications. Consumer states steering is getting harder to steer.

11 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Power steering locks up when applying brakes. Dealer first said that it was normal for vehicle. Ford later admitted power steering and power brakes were linked to same booster. When applying brake it takes away from power steering and it locks up. There is no remedy at this time.

12 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2000

When making a slow turn in either direction power steering locks up. This also affects brakes.

13 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2000

When the truck is placed under hard braking conditions, it loses power steering and becomes very hard to steer and control. This is very evident when hauling cargo or pulling a trailer. The problem has been confirmed by two Ford dealers, but Ford will not authorize any repairs because they say this is a normal condition. I don't know if my truck is bad or if all F-350 have this problem. The loss of steering will cause an accident very soon. The only reason a person would by a truck of this size is to haul cargo or pull trailers. Like I said, Ford has been notified by two dealers about this problem, but they will not do anything to fix it. Thanks.

14 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 12/15/1999

While driving on highway and slowing down to make a turn, vehicle started making loud noises. Also, steering got hard to turn, and had no brakes. Pulled over and shut vehicle off. Started it back up and everything was fine. Another time wife had the vehicle, went to stop at a red light, and vehicle went straight through the intersection into the ditch. Had no power brakes or steering. Contacted dealer.

15 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 10/15/1999

Hard/no steering when applied w/brakes. . . . . Since new.

16 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Loss of power steering at low speed when applying the brakes. This makes it impossible to steer the truck when trying to brake and steer at the same time. My wife is not strong enough to steer the truck and I am just able to move the steering wheel slightly.

17 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

A loss of power assist in steering will occur when driving in slow speeds less than 20 mph and applying brakes.

18 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Power steering cuts out when vehicle is moving slowly and brakes are applied. Ford dealed service manager said that Ford is aware of this condition and there is nothing that they can do about it. This defect possibly affects 1999 model year. Service manager encouraged me to complain to NHTSA. He said that if enough people complained, then Ford would have to do something about this defect.

19 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Power steering assist goes away when applying brakes. Very annoying, and if I ever had to stomp the brake pedal at speed and need to swerve, turn, etc. I believe it could potentially be fatal to someone. From the information I have read this is a pretty widespread problem with these trucks and needs to be corrected. They are much too big and heavy to not be able to steer correctly.

20 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Lose power steering assist at low speeds with brakes on. Difficult to steer and have come close to hitting other vehicles.

21 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Steering has no power assist when stopped and brakes are applied. Vehicle is difficlut to park when on an incline due to inability to turn wheel when brakes are applied. I also have concern about how the the vehicle will respond in an emergency stop situation if the wheel cannot be turned when brakes are applied hard. With this system I may be able to stomp and stay but not sure if I will be able to steer. Ihave taken truck to dealer for this condition but was referred to Ford special service message #12995 and told the condition was normal.

22 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem

Ford says this condition of power assist loss on steering is normal, can not turn steering wheel when brake is applied and truck is not moving. Steering very difficult when brake not applied.
