1 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2019

Driving Ford Focus on highway at roughly 70 mph. Car dash gave error saying transmission malfunction while driving. After error came up while driving, when I hit the gas pedal, nothing happened and I lost all acceleration control of vehicle. I had to coast to side of highway. Turned off car let it sit on highway shoulder. When restarted, the car moved but did not accelerate when I hit the gas. Took car to Ford service center where they said issue was with tcm and clutch which caused the car to go into a neutral state while driving.

2 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

The failure mileage was 129,000.

3 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2019

Bought the 2012 Ford Focus used in 2016. It shuddered when entering the roadway after stopping and also when going uphill. Dealer said the car had to get used to me as a driver. After many complaints, they did something non-mechanical to adjust it. Reprogramming, maybe. Once it was out of its limited warranty, they said it needed a new clutch kit, which was $1500. The shuddering stopped. Last month, shortly after leaving my driveway, the car jerked forward and the check engine light came on. I pulled into a neighbor's driveway to turn around and go back home and it wouldn't go in reverse. Had it towed to the dealer. The tcm was replaced. This month, I pulled into my driveway, put the car in park, went to take the keys out of the ignition and saw a message that said the car was not in park. Ok. The engine was off, I could remove the keys from the ignition. The gear shift lever was in park. The dashboard display said the car was in drive. I took my foot off the brake and the car started drifting down the driveway. I put the parking brake on. The car would not start. Had it towed to the dealer. They said the shift linkage had come loose from socket. This is the worst car I've ever owned. There is no warning that a problem is about to occur. The car just ceases to function. I'm very lucky that I was in my driveway, or close to home when the car died both times. I'm afraid to drive this car and have 2 years left to pay it off.

4 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2018

We purchased this vehicle as my daughters first car a year ago. It looks great but has issues. The transmission/clutch feels like it slips. The car always revs high. And you touch the gas pedal and sometimes it jolts too quickly. Today, I drove on freeway and came to a stop with red light at off ramp. Light turns green and push on gas and it shuttered and then propelled forward. Felt like it couldn't get in gear? it has done this a few times while in motion and on the freeway too, slips or sputters. I'm fearful for my young daughter being less experienced of a driver in this unsafe vehicle. I'm reading other peoples complaints, and I see many, many are having the same issues. We bought the car w 86k miles April 2017. Now has 97k. We will take the car in to our Ford dealer tomorrow.

5 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted into neutral and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. After five minutes, the vehicle became operable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the clutch position sensor needed to be replaced. The dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not repaired due to the workload of the dealer. In addition, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

6 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2016

My car has a problem with the transmission and I found out that there is a recall from the company. They have 3 recalls on the transmission: transmission control module reprogramming for overt tcm failure warning transmission clutch shudder / transmission input shaft seal warranty extension transmission control module extended warranty coverage I called them twice and they checked my VIN number and they found me eligible to get my car fixed at one of their dealers. I took my car there and the dealer refused to fix my car because my car has a branded(salvage) title. Now, if you can't build a car right, leave this business to somebody else. When you have all these failures in the transmission, this tells me the whole transmission is just a scam and it shouldn't be there. If a car got a hit in the trunk far away from the transmission and didn't even touch it, what this has to do with your mistake. Why do I have to pay for your mistake?do you even know what this transmission problem does to the car?here is what happened,I was driving my car on the freeway almost 70 miles/hour with my family and suddenly my car was not going forward and although pushing on the gas pedal, the car was not speeding. Do you realize that any car from behind could just hit me from the back because I didn't hit the brakes and no brakes lights were on nor any warning that I was slowing down. Do you know how I was terrified to go from my lane to the shoulder while losing speed and any truck or car can hit me and kill me with my family. No,you don't know because you don't care about other people's lives. If you care you won't let these cars run on the roads. 3 failures in the transmission, 2 of them will cover my salvage title and 1 won't cover it, why?? the way I see it is you messed up in the transmission and they are all connected with each other, why do you cover 2 faults and not the 3rd one?.

7 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that there had been no failures until the vehicle was serviced for NHTSA campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages) and weeks after the dealer champion Ford Lincoln, 140 southtown blvd, owensboro, ky 42303, (270) 684-1441 serviced the recall campaign, there was an abnormal noise heard in the area of the instrument panel and the radio. In addition, the electronic function of the doors locking failed to function and the contact was uncertain if the doors may secure due to the multiple failures. The contact felt that the recall repair remedy failed to provide a permanent fix. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

14 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2015

I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus sel last year. I have had continuous problems with the transmission since purchasing this vehicle. When taking off (shifting from 1st to 2nd gear), the transmission makes a shuddering noise, the vehicle fails to accelerate, and the car bounces as it struggles to shift gears. I believe this problem is well known to Ford since numerous consumer websites have customers with similar complaints. Soon after purchase, I had it back in the service department. I had a technician drive around with me. The technician stated that everything was normal and that the clutch plate just gets dirty by too "gingerly" accelerating. He walked me through how to power brake (holding down the brake, flooring the gas pedal, and then releasing the brake to quickly accelerate through the first 3 gears). This appeared to help for a day or two, but I find it hard to believe that this is the solution for a $12,000 certified pre-owned vehicle that I purchased. I recently received a recall notice claiming that the tcm software needed to be updated and that the transmission warranty would be extended. I had this upgrade completed with no improvement to the situation. The technician that I spoke with said the upgrade will probably not help the shuttering. He suggested again that I give it more gas when accelerating. He said something about it being similar to a stick shift stalling when not enough gas is applied. This does not work. I give it more gas to no avail. I have also recently seen where a class action suit against Ford for similar complaints from customers. My 17 year old daughter frequently drives this vehicle and I feel it is a safety issue that needs prompt attention. I have been a loyal Ford customer for many year. Please let me know what resolution you have for my complaint.

15 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

On October 7th, 2014 my car (Ford Focus 2012) began experiencing some transmission issues. It would jerk extremely hard when the gas pedal was pushed. It would only accelerate a little before finally jerking into second gear. The car acted as though it didn't want to shift gears. I took the car into the Ford dealership where I had purchased the car and they told me that it needed a new clutch piece and resealed the transmission seals. Afterwards, the car was still doing the same as before. I took it back in January of 2015 and was told that there was nothing wrong and the car was performing to the specs. After that, I continued experiencing the same problems and returned with the car again in late may of 2015. This time they said the computer needed to be reprogrammed and synced and it would fix the problem. After I received the car back it still made the same problems. On August 19, 2015 I was at a stop sign and pushed on the gas when the car shuttered as if the transmission was going to fall out it jerked so hard. It finally accelerated and started moving.

16 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stuttered and rolled backwards, the steering wheel shook and failed to turn, and the accelerator pedal failed to respond and traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. In addition, the "transmission ready" indicator illuminated. After the vehicle was restarted, it operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (camelback Ford, 1330 e camelback rd, phoenix, az 85014, (602) 635-7551) where it was diagnosed that the transmission clutch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failures recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 77,000. The VIN was not available.

17 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

While merging onto the freeway my car would not accelerate. I pushed the gas pedal to the floor and the rpms shot up but car would not accelerate. Finally after almost being hit by other cars it shot off like a rocket. After multiple incidents of jerking and not able to accelerate randomly I took it to Ford and the clutch was replaced in April 2014. Not long after, it started doing the same thing except worse. I took it back to Ford and was told the tranny test results came back normal and that a motor mount was missing or loose. They kept it for 3 days to fix the motor mount. The car is now worse and today the check engine light came on and car had very little power. Going to take it back to Ford and hopefuly they will fix it this time. My gas mileage is only 20. 1 mpg. Another problem was that my entire sync system went out and had to be replaced in August 2014, costing me $1093. 00. It started messing up by having a very loud popping/crackling noise that would start randomly even when car was off. It was very scary when it would suddenly start making the loud noise while I was driving and almost caused me to wreck at one point.

18 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while at a traffic light, the vehicle independently down shifted and vibrated abnormally. The contact continued to depress the accelerator pedal but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle regained speed as the contact coasted along the highway. In addition, the vehicle would roll backward whenever stopped on an incline and would begin shaking, causing difficulty in controlling the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch assembly needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 30,685. Updated 4/22/cn updated 04/25/2014.

19 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

There was an increasing variation in speeds as I tried to accelerate for merging onto major highway. Thought the floor mat was stuck under the accelerator pedal, but it was not. Problem continued at different times and different speeds. When I took the car in for service on 9/20/13, I described the problem to the service rep. He told me first that there was a service alert for this problem and would require 3 hours for the transmission to be re-programmed. I agreed to wait while the work was done. He returned shortly to inform me that there was a more recent service alert for this problem and that I would have to return at another time and leave the car for at least three days because it was likely the entire transmission had to be removed and re-built! and a rental car for that period would be at my expense since this is not an "official recall". This despite my having also purchased an extended warranty plan from Ford. I left the car at the dealership on 9/25/13 and got a rental car at my own expense. Later that day, I received a call from the service dept. Informing me that not only would the entire transmission have to be removed and repaired but the clutch would have to be replaced. It would take "at least 2 additional days" for these repairs", "if we get the parts in" . I am now waiting to see how long it will be before I get my car back, while I pay for a rental car in the meantime.

20 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate normally as the accelerator pedal had to be forced down in order for the vehicle to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the mechanic diagnosed the vehicle as the clutch assembly needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,800. The current mileage was 3,000.

21 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

The car is equipped with a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. While under heavy braking the car began to stall. The result was the brake pedal losing power assist from the engine. Then because the engine was trying to recover from the near stall, I was unable accelerate to avoid an oncoming car. The engine did recover, but it took several seconds (and a lot of bucking and sputtering) before I was able to move the car after coming to a stop. The week prior, I had the car in for service at a local Ford dealership because the car would shudder during acceleration. The dealership reprogrammed the transmission and the problem is still there, but less noticeable than before being serviced. This new issue with stalling under heaving braking did not occur prior to the servicing. After the near accident, I wanted to know if the problem was a fluke or if it would happen again. I have found that I can recreate the issue almost every time the car nears a stop under heavy braking. The car is scheduled for service for this issue.

22 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

While pulling into traffic from a complete stop car would not accelerate. Had to push gas pedal almost to floor to get car to go, that lead to a bucking acceleration, car jumping forward and almost being rear ended. Took car to shop first told that's how the car drives, then told by transmission "specialist" I was not driving my car aggressive enough. After a 2 week stay the shaft seal and clutch was replaced. Did not correct issue called Ford corp and again was told this is how the car drives basically telling me I was at fault. Car has since been back 2 times for the same reason, even took for a second opinion per Ford request and car stalled on the service manager on a hill and yet I was told that's how the car is suppose to perform!!! not happy. Tomorrow April 15th 2013 car is going back thus again for same reason. Not feeling safe in my car!!!!.

23 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

On may 25, 2012, computer in car was reprogrammed per recall 12b37b. 6 and repaired per recall 12s29c. 6. I had noticed that the transmission was not as smooth as it was when I first purchased the car the year before. After this, things really began to go downhill. Now the transmission is a total train wreck. The car rolls back on inclines. The first time this happened I almost hit the car behind me. The transmission grinds and shudders in low gears, especially when turning and slowing down or when starting out and trying to accelerate. On more than one occasion, I have pressed the pedal down to accelerate and gotten nothing. The car won't go. Going up hill the car jerks and shudders as though it is about to shut down, like when you don't have the clutch and the gas at the right place. At these times, the car will drive like a twenty year old jalopy. All in all, I have taken the car in three times to have work done on the transmission, and each time it seems to be better for a few hours and then gradually get worse than it was before. The problem seems to be getting gradually worse. I know that I am not the only one having the problem with the 2012 Ford Focus.

24 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the transmission slipped into neutral without warning while driving various speeds. The failure also occurred when placing the vehicle into park. In addition, the vehicle continued to roll while in park and jerked when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to crest Ford (22675 gibraltar rd, flat rock, mi 48134, (734) 782-2400) where it was diagnosed that the clutch and seals needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failures would not be covered under warranty. The contact found a letter online stating that Ford would cover all transmission defects for the vehicle; however, Ford refused to honor the letter due to the contact not honoring the July 19, 2019 deadline. The contact disputed that claim, stating that she called Ford to make an appointment two weeks prior to the deadline. The contact had an open case with the Ford manufacturer (case number: cas-22244671-k7c0k9) regarding this issue. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 20,000.

25 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2009

Have a 2012 Focus se. Purchased in may of 2010. Since July of 2010, I have been taking it to the local dealership where I purchased the vehicle complaining that the car was surging, shuddering, and when I hit the gas pedal, it feels like the car stalls, gets no gas, or has trouble getting into gear. Of course, there are no known issues until a recall. Finally, the problem can be addressed. I take it in, they "fix it" it still shudders, and feels like it's going to stall out in the intersection. Next thing, my car overheats and dies at 11pm on the side of the interstate. I take to a different dealership and they say, well the clutch is bad and the cooling system is bad. Great 2012 car and two items have already went out. They change the clutch and cooling system, now when I back up, it grinds and bogs down. I have had my car for 2 years in may, 39,000 miles on it, and it's been in the shop a total of 4 times. They have changed the clutch and the cooling system. Was told the clutch needed "several hundred miles to break in" gave it about 500, still grinds when I back up, more so on an incline. Although now, it's decided it wants to studder when it starts. So it's back int eh shop for the 4th time, and I'm yet again in a rental car. I have a customer service guy through Ford, he's useless. . . I can't even get him to return a phone call. What is the point of him being there if he's not going to do his job. I don't feel that I'm getting any resolutions from the local dealerships I have dealt with, or from your customer care manager. I want a replacement vehicle. I have worked with Ford over 2 years and the vehicle is still having problems. Of course the dealership tells me this is an isolated issue. Please go to edmunds, com and you will see that this is not an isolated issue. . . There are multiple reports of the same problems that I am having.
