The failure mileage was 168,919.

2 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2020

While driving at approximately 50mph on a country road the vehicle suddenly became unresponsive and numerous warning lights illuminated. A transmission failure warning appeared and the car immediately stopped accelerating. The electric steering became inoperative and steered the vehicle into oncoming traffic. Avoidance and stopping on the side of the road required an estimated 60-80lbs of force to regain minimal steering and bring the car to a stop. Once stopped numerous electrical systems on the car including lights, wipers, and other electrical components began to activate and deactivate in a seemingly random fashion. This car is absolutely unsafe!.

3 Transmission Failure problem

5 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2019

After purchasing the car, it stared to have transmission issues. Took it to repair shop. They reworked the front end and transmission. The computers on both the front end and transmission failed to sync together. This caused a total failure of the transmission. I had the transmission replaced only to have it fail four months later. The car started to jerk, jump forward and then stopped moving. The engine was racing but the transmission did not work. I was left in the middle of a busy intersection and thankfully had people help me push it out of the road. It's back at the repair shop, again its the transmission module and transmission. !.

6 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

My 2012 Ford Focus with dual clutch, dps-6 transmission has on multiple occasions unclutched the transmission while attempting to accelerate from a stop to make a left turn across a busy road. The unexpected lack of acceleration due to the transmission failing to transmit power to the wheels has nearly caused my wife and I to be hit by oncoming traffic despite starting the turn with adequate room to cross traffic and accelerate. Thankfully, adequate space and reaction by oncoming drivers has prevented a wreck. Ford has, on multiple occasions, flashed the computer and replaced parts and did extend the warranty on the transmission slightly. However, the transmission is slightly now out of warranty and continues to have the same problems with failing to accelerate and then violently slamming into gear. Ford has refused to cover further repair of the defective transmission despite clear evidence of the continued defectiveness of the transmission.

7 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2018

Since purchased brand new in sept 2011, my Focus has had major transmission issues that has been a nightmare to deal with with Ford to this day. My Focus was taken in at least 5 times in the first couple years for a faulty clutch that caused jolting and shuddering and jeering while driving, causing my car to slip in and out of neutral on the road, sometimes nearly hitting other drivers. It became very dangerous. It took at least 5 visits for Ford to replace the first clutch. They refused to accept that the part was faulty and did computer "updates" that did nothing to fix the issue. Over the last few years, my car has been brought in about a dozen more times for the same issue and has had a total of 5 clutch replacements in 6 years, and my car just broke down again yesterday, just barely over 100k miles, with Ford refusing to warranty my transmission. A message appeared, "transmission malfunction service now" and my car completely died. Ford never wants to take responsibility for these transmission issues and have hassled me every time in the last 6 years over these issues. It is a huge safety issue to keep driving this car never knowing when the clutch is going to give out and cause the transmission to fail. I have supporting documents for these claims and can request all service records from Ford if necessary. I do not want these documents made public since they contain sensitive information.

8 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2018

Transmission went to neutral while driving at 55 mph. Displayed warning that transmission overheated. Pilled on to side of road avoiding being rear ended by semi truck. Turned vehicle off waited 10 min restarted vehicle drove 1/2 mile back to dealership no warning messages. 4th time into dealership for transmission failure.

9 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Transmission failing unsafe to drive.

10 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2017

Power steering assist fault came on right after starting vehicle. Was unable to move the steering wheel. Kept shutting car down and restarting but to no avail. The previous day while on the freeway in commuter traffic day the ongoing transmission problem that 2 different local Ford service centers worked on 3 separate occasions. The 1st time I was told they replaced the transmission. The following times they replace a competent and re-programed it. As soon as I left the service center I could tell nothing was done. I called the service rep back and he said it was "adaptive" and I needed to allow it time to adapt. I was told I had a cracked motor mount. I told him it had to be caused by the violent jerking of the transmission when accelerating regardless of the circumstances. In stop and go city traffic I have been close several times to being rear ended because of its jerking /hesitation/acceleration. Tow truck driver could not move the wheel. Vehicle finally towed to local dealer. My extended warranty has been covering the transmission repairs but was told the safety problem on the steering was not covered under the warranty. I'm told to fork over 2k + to fix the steering before they would attempt servicing the transmission. Ford knows they have problems with steering and transmission but fail to correct them. The steering has been documented about going out on drivers at high rate of speeds on the freeway. Ford is intentionally risking the lives of Focus owners and passengers. This is a serious safety issue that Ford needs to correct now by immediate recall. It's obvious they gave no idea how to correct the transmission problem.

11 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2017

Ford has issued numerous bulletins related to problems with the Ford Focus transmission. Over the past few years Ford has extended the coverage on certain systems. My car transmission failed, preventing the car from being driven faster than approximately 15 mph (first gear). The dealer completed a software reboot which temporarily addressed the problem but stated that I needed a new "clutch pack" (approximately $1,600). Although the software reboot was covered under one of the warranty extensions, the clutch pack was not. Apparently, the software that tells the system what to do is covered, but the hardware is not? I am very disappointed that Ford refuses to fix the problem in spite of numerous issues that have been identified and documented. The issue/problem that I experienced has been well documented, but Ford refuses to address the fact that faulty design has caused this issue.

12 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2017

My first issue with the vehicle is a malfunctioning horn and front passenger side window. Then the transmission failed on me while I was driving. I had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership for service. Ford replaced the transmission after having the car for about a month. The dealership said they also fixed the horn. But that is not the case. The horn is still not working. I don't use the horn much, but I realized how dangerous not having one can be last week. I had to signal a vehicle backing up into the main road in order to avoid a collision. Since my horn was not working, I had to swerve. The vehicle is back at the dealership for service. The vehicle has been there for 3 days and they still have not updated me on the status of my vehicle.

13 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2017

I was driving the vehicle on the highway and suddenly the transmission failed and the car speed dropped suddenly from 70 m/h to 30 m/h. The car behind me almost hit me. My kids and I were very close to die. Called Ford and told me there is a recall on the transmission. Took it to the dealership and they said my car is covered by the extended warranty but they don't fix it because it's a salvage title. They said this recall program doesn't fix salvaged vehicles. Few weeks before they fixed the door latch because there was a recall on it. They never mentioned salvaged vehicles. What salvage title has to do with the transmission. I understand if the car was hit at the transmission site, then you don't have to fix it. However, if a car was hit at the door or had hail damages and the insurance company changed the title to salvage, why don't you fix the transmission? Ford people don't care if I or my family die on the road because of their fault. All what they care about is to save few dollars. Please investigate this issue and see how they can put unrealistic terms for the recall. How come the company makes fatal mistakes and they still put their rules what to fix and what not to fix. I'm asking you to investigate this recall program. I'm asking you to watch the recall program and make sure that these companies are making vehicles to take us places not to take us to hell.

17 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2016

The first time was going down 93 in boston area with my family the car went into transmission failure why I was in far left lane the car wouldnt go over 20 and I had to cross over to the far left lane to treach the breakdown lane. Luckily my family was not in accident because it could've have been far worse. It did the same thing a second time when I was going down 293 area going to a doctor appointment. This may end up killing my family if it doesn't get recalled and fix. We don't have extra money to be repairing it ourself every time it decides to do this.

18 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2016

Since purchased new, every 15k-20k transmission failure. 5x changes, now at 85k same issue, transmission jerks hard, doesn't shift. In addition, even with the extended warranty, they are claiming part of the clutch system is not actually covered only a portion of it.

19 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2015

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while approaching a stop sign, the accelerator pedal failed to operate properly as the vehicle downshifted into 1st gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to rusty eck Ford, inc. (7310 e kellogg dr, wichita, KS 67207) to be diagnosed. The mechanic determined that the transmission module failed. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the same dealer 4 or 5 times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact back to the dealer. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 13v523000 (power train) as a possible solution to the failure however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

20 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2015

Had the car for 10 days, went to start, and received a notice "transmission failure- service now" the car ended up getting towed, and needed new tms. Even after the fix, the car transmission drives awful. Car shifts at odd times, and has extremely slow pick up from a complete stock. Im terrified that something is going to happen to me while driving the car! ive seen over 1,000 other complaints about this same problem, and most of these incidents have happened while driving at high speeds. They are stating that the transmission fails and shuts down, causing the driver to lose power of the car. I don't know why that haven't fixed this, considering this could cause serious injury to someone, all because they chose to buy a Ford. Im nervous to drive the car, because I fear the transmission will fail on me. Ford has agreed that the transmission is a problem, but they have not recalled it. Now im stuck with this car that im afraid to drive.

21 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2015

I have taken my car in for service 16-18 times for problems with the sync and the transmission since I bought this car. I have had both the sync module and the transmission module reset repeatedly and finally replaced. I have had the clutch replaced twice in two years. The worse incident and the reason for the second clutch was because the car's transmission failed completely while I was driving approx. 45 miles an hour down a very busy two lane city road. I was able to pull over, turn off the car and restart the car and got about 3 miles from home and it failed again. I was literally in the turning lane for my subdivision and it failed again. I had to have the car towed from my house. I was lucky I was not involved in an accident. Ford refused to buy back my car when I requested it. I have copies of my service records as does cherokee Lincoln Ford of alpharetta, GA.

22 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

Car lost total ability to accelerate, as if it slipped into neutral. I was attempting to get into the passing lane. The transmission failed to shift but went into a state that appeared to be neutral. The rpms went through the roof and the car was suddenly decelerating as I was trying to merge into the passing lane, a large truck literally almost collided with my rear end as the event was so spontaneous that I had little ability or experience in dealing with such a situation. Pulled over to collect my wits, shut the car off and proceeded on after a while. The car was taken to Ford dealership , russ milne in macomb mi, they told me there was nothing they could do without being able to replicate the event. Its obvious Ford knows of this problem yet the dealership sends me back on the road with a known faulty transmission. Would not sell this car to someone else (dont want that on my head) and too little equity to trade-in (who would take it anyways). Ford is playing with a ticking time-bomb. . Someone will get killed because of this. I now stay in the slow lane. . Dont try to pass and just pray. No $$ to buy a new car and I have to drive this thing to keep my job/house/food/clothing. Trapped.

27 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2014

On August 24th, when driving on a major houston highway at 64mph, I lost all drive-train power. My check engine light and drive status indicator immediately started blinking, and I had no response from my throttle. I was simply coasting. Thankfully, I was able to safely take an exit ramp and pull into a relatively safe location off the major highway. I waited some time with the car shut off, and after starting it back up, the cel cleared itself and car was functional again after leaving my car at tomball Ford for a week, the dealership was unable to duplicate the issue, and found no record of the cel in the system. I was forced to pick the car back up from the dealership, and upon repeated inquiries from my wife as to whether or not the car was safe to drive, the service technicians would not tell her it was safe. On September 7th, only a few short days after picking the car back up, the same thing happened again during busy weekend traffic with my pregnant wife and baby daughter in the car. I had the car towed to my house, as the dealership was closed (it was a Sunday). Upon starting the car later that day in my driveway, the cel again, cleared itself. I dropped the vehicle off at the dealership again, and the service adviser informed me, that once again, they are unable to duplicate the failure. This car has now shut-down twice on me, with my family in the car, on very busy houston highways. I feel incredibly unsafe driving this vehicle, and question my dealership's ability to fix the issue after they willingly admitted they've "never seen this failure before. . Read more...

Car shutters and hesitates upon acceleration from a stop. Very concerning when making a left hand turn because you don't know for sure if the car will make the turn. I have read many posts about transmission failures on the Ford Focus. The car is not safe to drive.

33 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

I bought a 2012 Ford Focus from local dealership on June 14,2012. It had 25 miles only. I'm paying a very high interest rate on $20000+ loan for vehicle. I'm also paying extra $2500. 00 for an extended warranty. Approximately three months after purchase transmission failed. Mileage was 10,192. In July, 2013 another dealership had to fix transmission again. Approximately 29000 miles that time. On 5/23/2014 car showed major failure with ocm computer and transmission again. Would not crank. Now at approximately 63000 miles. I was told the car was fixed on 06/17/2014 and I picked it up around 2pm. . I immediately went working with the car and drove approximately a little over 100 miles. As I was returning home, accelerating uphill about 45 mph the car lost all gears. After turning car off, it would not crank again. This is same problem as before. Can you please help me in getting satisfaction in helping Ford own up to a major issues known even with their own technicians. It is also a flex fuel sedan. I feel robbed by high interest loan and a new car with major problems that seem impossible to fix.
