36 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2018

I began having problems with this vehicle in 2016 with taking off from a stopped position, accelerating, sputtering and random stalling while driving. . . . Without warning. After the car abruptly stalled on a busy highway with me and my son, I took it to the local dealer for testing. However, they were not able to find a problem that would cause the stalling. I continued to drive the vehicle sparingly and cautiously in 2017 around my community, experiencing random issues with dropping dead at a light or stop sign. In may 2018, increasingly more concerned, I took the car to a different dealer, who was unable to find a problem either. A couple of months later, in August 2018, the car abruptly dropped dead again in the middle of an intersection coming even closer to causing an accident. Unlike previous instances, the check engine light along with an error message appeared; not allowing the car to startup requiring it to be pushed out of traffic until towed. The problems experienced with this car has put me and my child in many unsafe situations causing tremendous stress and anxiety not knowing when or where the car would abruptly stall again. We've taken it the dealer numerous times for the same problem and was not diagnosed and fixed until the last trip in August 2018. The dealer indicated the fuel tank had collapsed and had to be replaced. My husband spoke to the general manager, Ford and many others who refused to acknowledge a wide spread issue with this particular vehicle. After multiple calls and complaints to Ford we were left with no choice, but to pay the $1,300 repair cost since we needed the vehicle that sat at the dealer from August 22, 2018 through October 16, 2018. It is very disconcerting to know Ford is and was aware of this problem and the safety hazards it caused at the time of our complaint and refused to do the right thing to ensue consumers safety.

37 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2018

Ran out of fuel in this vehicle, once when my daughter was driving on a highway, even though the fuel gauge would say there was between 75-100 miles before empty. The last time this happened the interior of the vehicle had a strong smell of gas. I then proceeded to take it to the dealership and after diagnosis the service manager said some valve remained open causing the gas tank to crack and in turn gas flowed back into the intake manifold. The cost to fix would be approximately $3100. The problem has been a known issue with this vehicle for quite some time, but Ford refuses to recall or even pay for the work. I even had an extended warranty and they wouldn't cover it either.

38 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2018

Following the illumination of the check engine light the vehicle would exhibit rough idle and stalling. The vehicle has logged approximately 88,000 miles. An ase certified automotive shop has diagnosed the problem with the fuel delivery system which is consistent with a technical bulletin on the issue wherein the fuel system does not properly equalize pressure. This results in a vacuum that starves the engine of fuel and causes the plastic fuel tank to collapse. The vehicle stalls while approaching or stopped at busy intersections. This poses a serious safety hazard. Additionally, the stress on the fuel tank may compromise its structural integrity. This safety concern should be the responsibility of Ford and a recall should be issued.

39 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2018

While driving on busy interstate gas gauge indicated sufficient gas, however engine light came on and Focus stalled on part of interstate in city with very little shoulder. Texas state police had Focus towed because of safety hazard. Ford dealer advised simply ran out of gas. Not true. Then intermittent engine light on and hesitation-stalling, but dealer not able to duplicate. Then few months later gas gauge acting erratically, engine light on and Focus again stalling in traffic numerous times. This time dealer diagnosed as evaporative purge valve failure causing fuel tank to collapse and other damage. Cost $2113. 42 for all repairs.

40 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2018

Car stalling while driving. Dealership runs codes and determines it's the fuel tank. It will have to be replaced. $2k for parts and labor.

41 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2018

I was driving and the car kept turning of. It happened when I was stopped at a light and multiple times when I was driving. It doesn't shutter and stall, it just shuts off. Engine light came on with p1450 and p0456. It is evidently a known issue. There was a recall for 2010-2011 Ford fusions for the exact same thing. "some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank. Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire. " there is no recall for the Ford Focus models affected, even though it is a known issue and not related to normal wear. It is a manufacturer defect. It was a very scary experience and a very costly one to repair. I am under 60,000 miles. I do not understand why there is a recall on one model, but not the other for the exact same manufacturer issue. The estimated repair cost is $1800 from the Ford dealership service department. I was almost hit, because it happened while I was making a turn. It caused me extreme anxiety. This is not the first manufacturer issue I have had with this car. Not long after getting it, I had transmission issues.

42 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2018

Fuel tank or vapor recovery system faults in the purge valve and vapor canister cause excessive vacuum in the fuel tank which then begins to collapse. Effects include false fuel readings and 'distance to empty' indications in the trip computer, as well as a reduced overall fuel capacity. Driving at 70 mph speed limit during rush hour in the middle of a 3 lane interstate, the 'distance to empty' reading was 25 miles and my destination less than 3 miles away. I ran out of fuel and had to maneuver to the shoulder in a vehicle without power.

43 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2018

Check engine light came on and took it to Ford dealership to get it fixed. They informed us that the purge valve was faulty which caused the fuel tank to be deformed. Total cost of fix is $1,000 plus and they also wanted to charge $321 to check the check engine light. After researching the issue, this is a known problem to Ford and the dealership. This is a systemic issue and the part was already recalled on the fusion but not the Focus, therefore, Ford refuses to take responsibility for the part on the Focus. The dealership said we could fix the purge valve only but the gas gauge would not read correctly. What kind of advice is that? a bandaid on a systemic issue due to a faulty manufactured part that causes the vehicle to be unsafe when driven. I have filed a case number with Ford and they refuse to correct their faulty part. Ford recommended I file a complaint with NHTSA.

44 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

I have 2012 Ford Focus titanium with handling package. Earlier this year is when this issue started. I pulled up to gas station to pump fuel into my car. After I was done I got back into my car and pushed the push start button. The car struggled to turn on and stay on and eventually stayed on without any issues so this lasted maybe 5-10 seconds. Each time I started up the car I had zero issues with getting car turned on. This issue only occurs when I have just put gas into the gas tank and I'm starting up the car. Filler neck has been replaced, fuel sensor and have even had a evap test done for leaks and the issue is still around. I've had a diagnostic done and the code came back as the car is releasing too much fuel. I don't remember the code or the exact wording but that was what the code was saying.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2017

Faulty fuel vent valve caused entire fuel tank to collapse.

46 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While walking outside of the vehicle, the contact noticed a strong fuel odor. He inspected underneath the vehicle by the fuel tank and noticed fuel on the ground. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 138,000.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2017

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph that the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact was able to coast over to the side of the road. In addition the contact stated that she observed the gas gage was on one fourth of a tank, however later the gas gage implemented a full tank when she had not filled up the vehicle, however due to she knew she had fuel within the car she drove. The contact called aaa who stated that due to the lights illuminated and sounded like everything else was normal to try gasoline, they did put fuel within the vehicle and that the vehicle started on the first attempt. The local dealer was not contacted or made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, however no additional assistance was offered besides the referral to NHTSA. The contact also stated that when she shuts the vehicle off to add fuel that the vehicles responded as though it would not restart, so now the contact adds fuel with the vehicle running in idol. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000. Jb.

48 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2017

The purge valve of the fuel system was stuck open causing the pressure differential to crush the fuel tank because of the vacuum effect. All other parts of the fuel system have been overheated because of the inconsistent fuel flow so they all have to be replaced. The entire fuel system including gas tank. The car would stall or want to stall while driving on streets, stopped idling, and driving on highway causing very dangerous situations. This would occur everytime you would drive vehicle. The problem started in September with no warnings and finally was so bad on October 13th I had to take it to the Ford dealer to get evaluated the car couldnt be driven anymore.

49 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2017

The purge valve cause the car to stall in traffic while driving and back fire cause the gas tank to suck in.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2017

While driving on the freeway 70mph and on city roads at 35 miles an hour the car will just lose power and shut down, the check engine light and fuel pressure light and battery light all come on when the car dies. Only the check engine light remained after getting the car restarted. And will take several tries to get it started again. We took it to the Ford dealer in american fork utah today and we received the code TSB 1600 6 to which they say means that we need to replace the fuel tank as well as the gaskets in tubes and sensors. It will cost about $2,000 to replace. We are not having them fix it at this time since we can't afford it. This comes just a week after they had our car for two weeks to repair the problem with the transmission recall. Not sure what to do at this point. This has happened several times in the last few months and three times in the last 24 hours.

51 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the midway Ford dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank collapsed and the fuel valve was damaged. The fuel tank and fuel system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened case number: cas12489026. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.

52 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. While driving 70 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic (precision auto care in charleston, south carolina) who diagnosed that multiple codes leading to the fuel system reader were inaccurate; therefore, the vehicle was out of fuel. The fuel tank needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

53 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

March 1, 2017 check engine light came on after car stalled, idle would increase and then decrease and then die. Made appointment at Ford dealer in lake worth, FL. Had to leave vehicle. At same time 3 recalls supposedly fixed. I was told fuel leak in gas tank, that is going through a hose into areas it should not go, causing readings to cause stalling and check engine light. I was told I needed new fuel tank, sendera?, gasket, tube asy for approx. $1,300 then $500 for labor for total of $1,800. Never heard of such as this except in vehicles over 20 years old or from accidents. Vehicle has approx. 90,000 miles. First incident occurred as I was accelerating from a traffic light on a city street, other times were similar or stopped or riding on interstate hwy, it would just stall.

54 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2017

Check engine light came on . Took to dealer where I purchased car . All maintenance has been done at this dealer . Service manager told me that problems with purge valve have caused fuel tanks to collapse and that was case in my car , code p 1450, code p144a . I asked if Ford would cover these repairs as car was out of warranty 79318 miles but obviously a manufactures defect , Ford refused to cover repairs and I payed under protest $ 1596. 55 for repairs. Car was stalling at stop lights , and fuel gauge not working properly when check engine light first came on .

55 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vacuum line malfunctioned when the vehicle reached half a tank of fuel. The failure resulted in the vehicle being unable to start. In addition, the check engine indicator illuminated as the vehicle failed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was not provided.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2016

Ford Focus gas tank issue: my car was stalling and would not accelerate timely so took it to the Ford dealership. They said the evap purge valve malfunctioned causing the fuel tank to warp. The gas tank needs replaced as well as everything related (see attached). My research on the internet (I have never heard of having to get a gas tank replaced due to normal wear and tear) shows that this issue is known by Ford and they are refusing to do a recall or even a notification to the owners of these vehicles. Besides my huge concerns on having a defective gas tank (I see it as a fire hazard), the car would not accelerate on the interstate and was trying to stall out - I was very lucky not to get hit. Ford has done recalls on other vehicles with this issue why not the Ford Focus? I expect to repair / replace things like the brakes not the gas tank.

57 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

Ford has a TSB for a known issue of the evap purge valve malfunctioning and causing the fuel tank to collapse. I fueled my vehicle up this morning and, upon starting, it stalled. I started it again, and after pumping the gas, it stayed on. The check engine code is p0441a.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2016

On 10/14/16 my wife complained that there was a smell of gasoline around her car. I walked out to the driveway and there was a strong smell of gas. She told me she had just filled the gas tank and confirmed that she does not top the tank off. I jacked the car up and found that there is a yellow plastic ring where the fill hose is attached to the gas tank. That ring is cracked and gas seeps out from there. We found that it doesn't leak if she has less than half a tank of gas so she usually keeps it that way until I have a chance to pull the gas tank out.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

My vehicle's fuel tank is compressing due to a faulty vacuum purge valve requiring a new tank, fuelpump and purge valve. This issue has caused my vehicle to stall in freeway traffic @ approx 60 mph and to stall in stop and go traffic. My rpm will fluctuate when at a stop and my fuel guage is completely inaccurate registering full to 1/2 at random. Smell of gas from somewhere but unknown. Symptoms match a recall on a 2011 Ford fusion but no recall on a 2012 Ford Focus.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2016

I took my vehicle to tropical Ford in orlando FL for a recall regarding the transmission and clutch, which job had to be done 3 different times within 90 days. After I picked up the vehicle on the 2nd attempt the vehicle mysteriously developed a problem with the gas tank and some other sensors inside the tank and related to the fuel system. The technician told me that this was a known issue and that he could show me all the gas tanks they had replaced because they had a pile of them in the back. I was told that the problem was due to the design of the system and that Ford was aware of the issue but they were not doing anything to assist or take care of this serious issue which causes your car to stall and engine to turn off while driving in the highway or city. I called Ford warranty department and filed several complaints and each time I was told that this issue was not cover by the warranty and there was nothing they were willing to do regarding this matter. This issue puts lives at risk when a vehicle turns itself of while driving in the highway or city. This issue is putting drivers and families at risk. This issue started at the beginning of 2016 and I recently had the repair done at the same dealership mentioned above.

61 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2016

I went to Ford late September for my car stalling and was told my transmission was failing again. My transmission had already failed once on a 2012. Ford fixed it and then a couple days later my check engine light was on. I brought it back and Ford said my fuel tank had collapsed and that I would need to pay $2k to replace it. I'd never heard of fuel tanks not lasting the life of the vehicle. I did further research and found out Ford has released a TSB for this known issue which is a precursor to a recall. I am not sure why Ford would not cover a faulty fuel tank and I am not sure how this is not a safety issue when my car can stall or leak flammable liquid or fumes. I've read that other Focus owners have had theirs replaced twice or more so I am not confident Ford actually has a solid fix to the issue and I do not feel safe driving my car.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2016

In October of 2015 the transmission failed completely while I was driving in the center lane of a major highway. The fault was in both the transmission control module and a broken seal and clutch. Even after repairs were made the transmission remains problematic. Then in may 2016 the fuel tank collapsed while I was driving it on GA 400, a major interstate connector. This was the result of a stuck valve. The fuel tank was replaced, however less than a week later, the fuel tank collapsed again while I was driving it, this time however my daughter and her friend were in the vehicle with me.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2016

My car stalls constantly and while driving I have to put it in neutral and restart it. Ford says it's a purge valve problem, with the gas tank being unable to relieve pressure (or allow air in) as gas is used. From what we've read online many many people are having the same problem. Supposedly it's a $2,000 fix. I have stalled in an intersection before. It was scary.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

I'm writing about a problem that I feel is a safety defect. My car started idling very erratically and the amber engine light is on. The dealer says that the vapor canister control solenoid failed, drawing a vacuum in the fuel tank which caused the fuel tank to collapse. It also filled the vapor canister with fuel. They say the raw fuel from the canister is being drawn into the engine causing the erratic idle. This is not only a problem with just my vehicle, but thousands of others who are having the same problem. It's beyond costly and through no fault of the owners, our cars are unsafe to drive!.

65 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2015

My Focus, as so many others has had transmission problems and the transmission control module has been replaced twice. But, today I'm writing about a new problem that I feel is a safety defect. My car started idling very erratically and the amber engine light is on. The dealer says that the vapor canister control solenoid failed, drawing a vacume in the fuel tank which caused the fuel tank to collapse. It also filled the vapor canister with fuel. They say the raw fuel from the canister is being drawn into the engine causing the erratic idle. I will admit that my vehicle has 124,000 miles on it and Ford wouldn't offer any assistance with repairs so I am a little miffed. But, between the safety issue of the transmission failures and now the fuel system failure and collapsed fuel tank, I feel that this vehicle is a serious safety issue.

66 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2015

My husband was driving my car home from work and it began sputtering. Luckily there was a residential road nearby and he turned off the business hwy and the car died. It wouldn't start and was acting like it had no gas even though it had over half a tank. It had to be towed. It has now been in the shop for 3 weeks waiting on a back-ordered fuel pressure sensor. It's only a few years old. This is the most frustrating thing!!!.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the service engine light illuminated continuously on the instrument panel and the fuel gauge became erratic. The failure occurred previously and the dealer replaced the evaporator canister purge valve but the failure recurred. The vehicle was recently taken to the dealer, who indicated that the fuel tank and valve would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Spiders or insects block the vents from the gas tank making it almost impossible to fill my gas tank. I bought the car in the summer of 2012 and it happened in the fall of 2012 and the fall of 2013.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2013

Just purchased a 2012 Focus, loving the car until. . . . . Three weeks into ownership while driving home from work, I noticed the gas gauge seemed to be erratic. . . . Showing 1/2 tank, fluxuating to full, to 1/4, back up to 3/4, down to 1/2 tank and then without any low fuel warning audible or visual warning . . . . All instrument panel lights come on, car loses power, stalls, I try to start car, it will not start. I begin to coast out of lane and onto the shoulder, again trying to start car and it will not start. I call for roadside assistance and find that I have run out of fuel. How could this be? I am provided with a gallon of gas, car starts up immediately, I go to nearest gas station to fill up. Gauge reads full, I've driven 100 plus miles without any movement of the gauge I start to suspect the gauge may be faulty. I google this issue and find I am not the first who has experienced this problem. Reading the Fordfanatic posts it seems as if dealers make several attempts to resolve issue which leads to several different repairs/replacements before resolution. This is frustrating to the consumer! appears to me, a recall would restore faith in Ford and Ford service.
