Vehicle shudders when accelerating from a stop. On several occasions my vehicle has stalled while accelerating onto the freeway, putting me at risk of being rear ended. I took my Ford Focus in to a Ford dealership and was informed that my clutch had failed, but that it also had previously been replaced just 2. 5 years prior. My car is a 2016 with under 70,000 miles. I was informed of a lawsuit involving the transmission in the Ford Focus for the year of my vehicle, but was then advised that my transmission is not eligible for the settlement and replacement. 7 Clutch Broken problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/29/2019

Powershift transmission is causing problems. My 2014 Ford Focus had a history of slipping when shifting, but I did not take it into the dealer for a diagnostic until my regular mechanic noticed it and red flagged it as a concern while operating the vehicle. I took the car to my local dealership and paid $160 to run a complete diagnostic of the transmission system. The result of that diagnostic was the internal clutch was bad, and I would need to do a complete rebuild of both the clutch and the transmission, because the clutch is located inside the transmission, at a cost of $3,081. 77. After recovering from sticker shock, I was told it was ok to continue to drive the car until the clutch stopped working as they anticipated failure in the lower gears. After this information, I reached out to two transmission repair centers for a second opinion, both which told me that Ford has been repairing all the transmissions they have seen with this problem at no cost to the owner. In addition, they told me they were not able to purchase the replacement parts listed in the diagnostic results because Ford is not selling them to outside repair houses because of the number of repairs Ford is making on this transmission. Today the clutch failed and I could only use the lower two gears to limp my car back to the dealer, again being quoted the original repair price. The dealer service rep is telling me Ford is either repairing for free or sometimes credit up to 50% of the repairs, mileage dependant. When I called the number the dealer provided, I was assigned case # cas22256019 and told 0% would be credited because they have no record of a problem. It is clear that this is an on-going problem of the drive train, also that Ford is not being up front about the extent of the problem. I believe the NHTSA needs to step in and work with Ford to develop a consistent solution to this issue.

8 Clutch Broken problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/27/2019

Whenever weather is above 75 degrees, the check engine light goes on and the vehicle starts going up and down in rpm, usually going down to 500 rpm while stationary. At random times, it would go up to 4000 rpm with just a short acceleration while in an intersection. During one hot day last Saturday (8/27/19), it was above 85 degrees and the car would not even reverse when I was at a dead end of berkeley. I had to wait for my car to cool down before it eventually started reversing again. I already had my clutch replaced 2 years ago due to another recall on the car, but now this clutch has failed me. I went to the Ford dealership and after their repair specialist inspected my car (which will cost me $200), they confirmed the clutch is no longer working. My 2012 Ford Focus is out of its 7 year extended warranty, so they quoted me $3,300 to have this clutch replaced. I refused to pay this and they told me to call the Ford customer relationship center at 1-800-392-3673. They said I can complain, but they likely will not help me. This is the 4th time I have been at this dealership for repairs and the other 3 times was due to a recall issue. I spoke with the customer relationship center and explained my situation. Unfortunately, they cannot repair this clutch for free since its no longer under warranty. What the customer rep (April) suggested to do was to keep my receipts for the repair and hopefully Ford might come with a recall where they can reimburse me for the repairs. I wanted to escalate my complaint, but they said they will just tell me the same response.

10 Clutch Broken problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/20/2019

Takata recall. While going down the highway, my car shuddered harder than usual and seemed like it lost power. My transmission light came on soon after this. I took my car to a local dealership and they explained that there was a recall on my car for a control module that would cause my car to stall without notice. When my car stalled it made a loud knock and my clutch brake broke. The dealership told me that the breaking of my clutch brake could not be covered in the recall because it is different section of the transmission. My question is if the transmission is faulty to begin with then wouldn't it affect my clutch brake and cause it to be under too much stress? I now have to pay 1500$ to have it fixed, but the recall is free of charge.

22 Clutch Broken problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

I bought my car in December of 2014, certified preowned. After having the car for not even a full month, I received a call that I had a clutch that came in to their service department. I had not ordered one, nor did I know the car needed one at time of purchase. Since then I have been through 3 clutches and the fourth was just ordered Monday June 12, 2017. Every 15,000 miles the car begins to shudder and experience shifting hesitation. This is extremely unnerving, especially when it only does it when taking off from a stop or when accelerating after slowing down foe say a red light that just turned green. It doesn't make me feel safe, I've had multiple instances where this has caused near collisions when pulling out into traffic because the car essentially stalls out and I stop moving. Ford has not issued a recall for this and this is my third year experiencing these problems. I don't want to pay for something that is the manufacturers responsibility. I got a recall for something trivial, door latched, but not thw huge safety problem that is my clutch failing. The dealer also stated on a 07/16/16 invoice that this is a recall item, but I'm still paying for it. I have all prior invoices of all clutch work done.

27 Clutch Broken problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/07/2016

We had to have the front suspension repaired 3 times in the first 5,000 miles. There was a major knocking sound and you could feel movement in the steering wheel when the car was transistioning over a speed bump or into a driveway. Right after this was fixed, after the third replacement of the same parts, the transmission had to be repaired 4 times, 3 times the clutch pack failed which happened regularly every 10,000-12,500 miles. The car would jerk violently during start of moving and then the clutch would slip while driving at speed. The clutch pack was replaced 3 times. The last time the transmission just failed to shift into any gear, forward or reverse, this happened while the car was moving in a parking lot. We are afraid this will happen driving on the street, through an intersection, getting on or driving on a freeway. The dealer looked at it, they said the onboard computer showed a failure code, they reset the code and then stated there was no porblem. When asked why the part that the failure code said was bad was not replaced the dealer stated that there was no problem and just drive the car. If it fails again have the car towed in and they will check again.

32 Clutch Broken problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

I purchased my 2012 Ford Focus on sept. 25, 2012. I have had problems with the transmission and clutch ever since purchasing. On 7/16/13 Ford performed a computer adjustment on the transmission. On 7/9/14 Ford installed a new clutch in the car. On 9/17/15 they reprogrammed the transmission. Ford claims that the problems with shuttering on acceleration are normal operations for the car. They have also extended the warranty on the transmission because "on your vehicle, it may be possible for the powershift 6-speed automatic transmission to exhibit excessive transmission clutch shudder during light acceleration. This condition may be caused by fluid contamination of the clutch due to leaking transmission seals. " they extended the warranty on the car to a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty for the transmission only. On 12-11-15 I was driving my car on very busy four lane road. I came to a stop at a red light, while attempting to turn left. When I tried to accelerate from the red light my car would not shift from first to second gear. The car would only accelerate to around 15 mph, the speed on the road was 45 mph. Once I hit 15 mph the engine would just rev but the car would not accelerate or shift gears. I had to stop in the middle of the left lane and turn off the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, it would shift from first to second gear with heavy shuddering. Upon taking my car to Ford for the 4th time they said that the clutch failed and that they needed a new clutch. This will be the second new clutch that that they have put on the car. The car currently has about 22,000 miles. This vehicle is unsafe to drive and Ford is unable to find an appropriate fix for the problem. They are aware of the problems and have extended the warranty on the car but are not able to correct this issue. This car should be recalled due to the transmission issues.

34 Clutch Broken problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/13/2015

Transmission shudders, lurches, stalls, fails to shift, will take off, and then suddenly stop in traffic. Currently 31,000 miles, issues began with 15,000 miles. In first second and third gear, the car will either shudder or lurch out suddenly no matter the speed. At times it will lunge forward and come to a stop while trying to upshift, suddenly, in the middle of intersections and at stop signs. This has caused me to nearly rear-end other drivers, and other drivers to nearly rear end me. It has also caused me to come to almost a complete stop in oncoming traffic after leaving a stop sign. You must completely let off the gas, and then slowly accelerate until the car catches a gear and can get moving again. Sometimes this does not always happen soon enough before oncoming traffic reaches me. My car has already been re-programmed, and I'm awaiting an 8-12 week recall for a clutch. Was told by the dealership that this is normal behavior for a manual transmission. I've driven manuals all my life, and they didnt nearly kill me. Before this car, I purchased a 2013 Ford fiesta, it has the same issues. After replacing the clutches failed to fix the safety issues. I traded it on the Focus thinking I had a lemon. Now I'm having the same safety issues as before. I let the dealership know this morning that the car was a definate safety concern, and I got no response. I want this on record in case of an accident that causes injuries. I'm not safe driving this car on the road.
