Failure Date: 03/29/2023

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a good year service center to be diagnosed. The mechanic retrieved dtc code: p1405 (egr valve). The contact stated that a smoke test was performed that indicated that one of the valves remained open. The contact then stated that the valve was lubricated, and the vehicle was presumed repaired; however, the failure recurred. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and the contact was advised to call the NHTSA hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/17/2019

Along with the myriad of Ford dps6 transmission problems, and repairs over the past 4 years, I alsoy had an event that could have caused a fatality directly related to the performance of the power train and engine. While attempting to make a light acceleration for a city green traffic signal for a left 90 degree turn the car unilaterally increased the speed and rpm's. The car was moving so fast I nearly hit a tree on the opposite side of the intersection at a high rate of speed. I had to repeatedly hit the gas peddle with my foot to stop the acceleration, while maintaining directional control of the vehicle. I am still waiting for Ford to contact me about the other fuel recall issue related to this vehicle so they can address this issue as well.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/08/2017

Vehicle purchased in 2015 with less than 20k miles. 1st problem, exploded tire causing minor body damage and sensor damage. Thankfully just came from a stop sign and not traveling fast, no injury. 2nd problem, driving down road at approx 35mph when airbags suddenly deployed. Wondered if hit small animal. Got out to investigate. . . . . Nothing. Vehicle then rolled off road (decline in terrain) landing rested in a chain link fence. Upon inspection, discovered that motor mounts had failed causing motor to drop forwards towards radiator therefore indicating crash and deploying airbags. All components connected to motor ripped forwards as well. Thankfully also no injury. If that would have occurred at high speeds, serious injury or death could have resulted. There is no reason or excuse for failure of motor mounts. This is clearly a defect. Contacted Ford at the highest level number I was able to obtain. Requested only to address safety issue. They issued a claim, dismissed it and would not allow me to speak to anyone with the authority to address the issue. Contacted chevy dealership where vehicle was purchased, they said Ford would have to address the issue. Then took vehicle to Ford dealership to run diagnostic to evaluate why airbags deployed. This vehicle contains a module that contains data pertaining to airbag deployment. It is as simple as retrieving the data! only Ford field rep can do this. Towed vehicle to dealership to perform diagnostic to next be referred to rep for data retrieval. Employees of dealership were not allowed by their supervisor to examine the vehicle due to the extent of damage under the hood. Someone needs to be concerned with the integrity of the motor mounts on this vehicle. Other vehicles may have this problem as well. If mounts were to fail at high speeds, catastrophic crash would be eminent. Damage from crash would hide failed mounts as cause.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2017 Ford Focus

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/27/2016

Car at stop engine revs from low to high, if you press on the accelerator the engine will die even when you are in motion. Sometimes the engine will just die when you press on the accelerator. In traffic on highways this is extremely dangerous. The cost to repair this default in design was $889. 18 at the Ford dealership where the car was purchased new. That is an egregious charge for a common complaint about this care. Per the internet research we have done. Ford says the car is out of warranty and take it up with nhsta so that is what I am doing.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/14/2016

I drive a 2012 Ford Focus. I bought the car used in January 2015. In the fall of 2015 my car began jolting every time I put pressure on the gas, this was alarming. When it became worse, I bought the car to a Ford dealership, and came to find that the transmission was recalled. To fix this Ford had a strict protocol to fix the transmission in a 3 step process. The mechanics are only told to do step 1, and then if the problem persists months after the repair, continue with step 2 and so on. The transmission started jolting again a few months later, this time worse. I have been waiting a month for the Ford dealership to get that part that will "fix" my problem, while I was assured the problem would not get worse. In that time a piece in the exhaust has also been recalled, neither one of my windows in the front two seats will go down, and the jolting has become incredibly unsafe. There have been two occasions where my car has just come to a completely alarming stop while driving up to 20 mph, on a busy two lane street. I take this street everyday to and from work. There is no other option. I avoid the highway completely now. I feel completely unsafe and on guard at all times while I am driving this vehicle. Because of my experience wth this car in only a year I will never purchase a Ford vehicle ever again. I regret ever driving it off of the lot. I am only 25 years old, and can't afford to trade this in right now, and that is all I want to do. It is not a nice feeling to have a pit in your stomach every time you buckle your seatbelt.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/19/2015

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. Ever since the vehicle was initially purchased, there was a safety concern with the clutch. The contact stated that the clutch assembly shuttered and affected the condition of the vehicle. Years later, the dealer (pat milliken Ford, 9600 telegraph rd, redford charter twp, mi 48239, (313) 731-6436) repaired the vehicle per an unknown recall. Months later, the failure recurred. In addition, after completing an unknown manufacturer recall concerning the door locks, the horn, key fob, and electronic locks failed to function. The contact was not experiencing the electrical failures prior to the dealer's repairs. The contact was concerned that the recall remedy caused multiple electrical failures. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/19/2015

Accelerating up a shallow hill the transmission began to stutter and jerk and grind as it changed gears. In the middle of the jerking the car shifted into neutral and revved up. Complete loss of power at speed. Pulled over to the side of the road (on a hill) put the car in park and shut the car off. When I released the brake the car rolled backwards down the hill - clearly the car was not engaged in park. I applied the brake to stop the car and engaged the e brake. I tried to restart the car it would not start. Error kept flashing 'parking aid malfunction - service required'. The failure left us stranded on the side of the road on a 95 degree day without the ability to start the car. I am currently waiting for Ford dealer to determine the cause of the failure. The jerking and stuttering of the transmission is a very regular occurrence for my car. It happens at almost every startup, especially when hot. The jerking and stuttering has in the past resulted in loss of power to the point that I have almost been hit by oncoming cars when I tried to pull out into the street. I had also brought my car to the dealer previously complaining of severe jerking and stuttering and was told this was normal for the transmission.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/16/2014

1. Engine fades or loses power rapidily during execution of freeway- speed turns (off ramps for example) without braking; I have gone from 50 to 20 mph within 1-2 seconds while in front of another vehicle and semi (very dangerous). The vehicle was tuned and typical parts replaced for smog check a few months ago and pased smog check wtihout comments. This problem started around 100k and has happened to other drivers who borrow my car. The Ford dealership (serramonte Ford) was unable to recreate the problem so I paid 150 dollars for a can of fuel additive and lost use of the car for 8 hour even though I was asked to drop it off start of morning. 2. Now it stutters or heistates during high acceleration (ie passing lane or going uphill) on highway; the vehicle is no longer reliable esp. If you should need to rapidily increase power. I have read of possible connection related to either a fuel pump or debris from the fuel tank inner coating/material compositon degrading over time.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

While driving my Ford Focus 2012, the engine would shutter inbetween shifts. This resulted in delays in the shift and then sometimes in surges in power, back and forth. There was also often a grinding or clicking noise coming from the undercarriage during the shift. I finally got Ford to fix this problem after taking it into the shop for service three different times and making numerous phone calls. In the interem, I beleive my life was in danger do to the unpredictible malfunctioning of this vehicle. There were several times when I was trying to get through an intersection or get on the highway when the delay/shutter/surge of the vehicle could have caused me to have an accident, as I could not predict when the incidents were going to occur, or exactly to what degree. I beleive Ford's repeated refusal to remedy this issue put my life in danger. The fix ended up being a replacement of the clutch. However, I was advised by the technician that this would only be a short term fix and that eventually the problem would return (no doubt next time only after my warranty has expired and I will not be able to afford the repair). Please help resolve this problem before some is seriously injured by Ford's refusal to take responsibility for their dangerous and defective product.

11 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Upon startup, the car idles rough and the rpms drop until the ecu catches it and the rpms increase. The problem becomes more frequent as the car is driven. At times, the rpms will drop so far that the car will stall. The problem tends to get worse as the car heats up. It has stalled multiple times when come to a stop at an intersection or to park. For example, I went out to start the car after about 20 minutes of it sitting after 40 minutes of mixed commuting and the car could not keep an idle. It stalled on me 3 times and felt like it was going to shake itself to pieces. I finally got it started by holding down the throttle and I was able to move the car. It was 60-63 degrees out on April 3rd, 2014 in southeastern CT when this problem occured. The problem also seems to get worse as the air temperature increases.

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/15/2013

Car jerks alot! always jerking at low speeds and usually through gears 1-4. Very unreliable in city driving and feels very unsafe. I totally regret purchasing this vehicle. Taken it several times to the Ford camelback in phx az and they just say its the way the manufacture built the car and how the car is able to save gas. Ford needs to recognize this problem and give Ford owners a break.

13 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

This applies to a Ford Focus electric, not a gasoline model. Was traveling approximately 30 mph when "stop safely now" indicator appeared. Vehicle slowed and came to stop within a few seconds while still in traffic lanes. I placed the car in park and switched the system off, then on again. It started normally and drove normally for approximately 50 miles while I went home. There is no apparent valid reason for the vehicle to stop itself. Under other circumstances this could have been extremely dangerous. Checking reports on the internet, it appears that this problem is very common, and many people have reported repeated occurances of this problem. Weather at the time was moderate (70 to 75 degrees f). This is a new car (two weeks old, approximately 1350 miles) while I don't suggest that the following are contributing factors, I list them because they were unusual for me and this may be helpful to reviewers looking for common circumstances: 1. The vehicle had been given a level 1 (120 volt) charge earlier in the day, bringing the state of charge from approximately 60% to 70%. This is unusual because I usually use level 2 (240 volt) charging. 2, the vehicle had been switched "on" with the air conditioner operating for about an hour but without driving anywhere. The problem occured shortly thereafter, after driving approximately two miles. 3, no other unusual circumstances were noted. Car drove normally before and after this incident.

14 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/17/2013

I bought a brand new 2013 Ford Focus in January 2013 after having previously owned a 2011 Ford Focus that was having transmission issues. The dealership had told me that the 2013 Focus models had a redone transmission that was more expensive and didn't have the "issues" that plagued the 2011 Ford Focus. Turns out it is the same transmission, except with a computer update which does not fix the issue. Within the first few weeks, my car was 'shuddering' for lack of a better description when accelerating; the rpm's go up sporadically to, revving the engine higher than it needs to go. It feels almost like it's going to die and then will catch the gear and go. I have taken my current car in for service once for another update, but my 2011 was in the shop multiple times to fix this issue, and always came back to me doing the same 'shuddering' as it did before it went in. I called Ford and they said they would talk to my dealer and they would take care of it. Well, by taking care of it, they meant that there is another 'update'. I had it updated on 8/26/13 and I picked it up only to find that the shuddering is worse. It's not safe to try and drive a car that shudders and lags when you have to cross busy streets and in normal daily traffic. I'm tired of dealing with this issue especially being that I bought a new car. And an american car at that. Ford needs to have some integrity and fix this before I do what I want to do and go buy a Honda or Nissan.

15 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

Safety hazard-- upper motor mount on 2003 Ford Focus malfunctions/ disintegrates within three months of installation; whether by garage, dealer, or owner. In seventeen months, I have had to replace the mount (when caught) four times and found it again needs replacement. The oem parts say guaranteed but it constantly cost to remove, repackage, ship, and then replace.

17 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/28/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Focus. While driving 5 mph, the contact heard a popping noise coming from under the hood. She then noticed steam rising from the engine and the vehicle shut off. Approximately 5 minutes later, she was able to restart the vehicle. The dealer stated that the egr valve caused the failure and they replaced the valve and the hose assembly. The contact stated that the vehicle drove roughly after the egr replacement. She returned to the dealer and they stated that the engine caused the failure. As of September 5, 2007, the dealer had not replaced the engine. The failure and current mileages were 141,000.

18 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

2000 Ford Focus-air intake manifold (failure). Symptoms, rough idle, stalling, causes computer control system to make engine run lean furthering the problem. On the lower side of the air intake manifold is what appears to be an air intake control valve. The material disintegrates over time which allows excessive air into the air intake manifold, causing the oxygen sensor to detect to much oxygen and sending the computer a signal to increase the amount of fuel. The engine speed at idle decreases to around 500 rpm and stalls. At higher speeds, the engine runs rough and has substantial lack of power and misfiring. Dealer examined vehicle and tried to defraud me by encouraging me to replace numerous items at the same time. Inspection cost was excessive, so I took the vehicle home and raised the hood to investigate further. An air sucking sound was heard and it was discovered this air stop or valve had disintegrated. The way it was discovered was by following the sound to the part and touching it to confirm a vacuum into the engine. When touched the part disintegrated into my hand. I proceeded to temporarily seal the leak with duct tape and the idle increased to normal speed and the vehicle quit stalling. Thereafter, I went to my local kragen auto supply and picked up a rubber hose cap about 3/8 inch diameter internally. Then I took the duct tape off and forced the rubber hose cap over the air valve which sealed the leak. Since then I have not had any problem. The dealer recommendations would have cost me around $1,000. 00 in repairs. The actual repair cost me around 0. 35 cents. Fords original equipment part should be on recall because it should not disintegrate. I can understand wear and tear and mechanical failure, however I can not and will not accept product disintegration as acceptable in current automobile technology, and neither should our governments national transportation and safety administration.

19 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/07/2007

At seemingly random time my 2001 Ford Focus zx3 stalls. So far the stall has only happened when at a stop, but sputtering and loss of power randomly at highway speeds has me worried about an eminent stall. I have had the fuel filter changed as well as the egr valve and egr pressure flow sensor and nothing has solved this problem.

20 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/10/2006

Exhaust gas return (egr) line failed at exhaust manifold mounting flang . This failure allows carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to seep into the passenger compartment of the Focus. Co poising can cause: 1)death a) the driver of the Ford Focus passes out and dies in a crash b) the driver of the Ford Focus dies from CO poising 2)organ failure it is interesting to note that you can't attach a photomicrograph's to this complaint form?.

21 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/23/2005

Contact stated car would not go over 60 mph. She took vehicle to a dealer, and they told her the egr valve was bad. She had not had the valve replaced yet. She noticed the problem on 7-23-05. She has been on the internet and found lots of fuel related problems; but nothing specific to the egr valve.

22 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/23/2005

The day was very hot, 90+ degrees. I had the air conditioning on while driving and had to take my husband to a dentist appointment. I left the car running with the air conditioning on for about 10 minutes, then shut the car off. After another 5 minutes, I restarted the car, with air conditoning on and waited for my husband to return. The car was running for a total of about 25 mintues while parked. My husband returned and we proceded to go over to the other side of town to get some dinner. It was 4:30 pm at this time. On our way, the car started to 'jerk' forward and backward and I had no acceleration at all. I stepped on the gas and absolutely nothing happened. I managed to get over to the side of the road when the engine just died. I tried to start it several times to no avail. We waited several minutes and I was able to restart the car. We drove on, with the air conditioner on for about 6 more miles when the same thing happened. I managed to get off the road, but not before the engine died. My husband called a local Ford dealership and told them what had happened and we were told it sounded like the fuel pump might need replacing. We had the car towed to a local Ford dealership, not the one we had called, and were told they would get to it that night yet. They called us at 8:30 pm and had not gotten around to doing the diagnostics as yet. They called back within 30 minutes and told us that the fuel pump will probably need replacing, but they will call us as soon as they knew for sure. At 11:30 pm, they called to say that the diagnostics had shown nothing and they could not replicate the problem. They had no idea what the cause may have been and were shocked that such a thing could even happen to such a new car. There was nothing they could do. We picked the car up this morning and are praying to god that we can get home this evening without the problem happening again.

23 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/16/2005

After starting the vehicle consumer smelled exhaust fumes inside/outside the vehicle. Dealership repaired the gas recirculation valve (egr) valve.

24 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/23/2004

Consumer stated that vehicle surged/hesitated and stalled. She took the vehicle to the dealer, and they did not see any problem. Consumer received a recall notice, and tried to get an appointment to get the vehicle repaired, but was put off. Dealer stated that the recall had nothing to do with the problem she was having. Consumer later took the vehicle to a local mechanic because engine" check light came on, and she was told that the egr sensor needed to be replaced.

25 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/15/2004

While driving vehicle hesitated. Dealership informed consumer that the problem was pertained to the failure of the egr valve.

26 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/01/2004

My 2001 Ford Focus engine light came on a week or so ago, so I took it to autozone and had them check out my computer, and see why the light came on. The culprit was my egr valve. It said that the was low or no flow to the valve so I cleaned the egr valve ports and replaced the valve with a new original Ford egr valve. The light stayed on and it is still acting up. It is hesitated with acceleration, it is stalling and cutting off on my at low speeds, and my gas mileage has dropped big time! also, my left-rear tire had warped drastically even despite rotating my tire often, it all ways seems to keep on warping my back left tire.

27 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/20/2004

I was driving on the on-ramp of the PA turnpike when scalding water from up under the dash poured out onto my right foot. I was barely able to drive the car to a safe stop. I sustained second and third degree burns to my right foot. The wrecker took the car to a Ford dealer in emmaus, PA for repairs. The service department originally told me that the evaporator line was plugged, but when I picked up my car, the narrative on the service form said that the line was not plugged. They replaced the evaporator which I understand entailed removing the entire dash. I do not know if the old part is available.

28 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/17/2004

Heat shield dropped while driving on west ridge road causing sparks. It ruptured the fuel line which caused the fuel to spew all over the road. 911 contacted, road closed and taco bell where the vehicle was moved, was evacuated due to the massive fuel leak and fumes. Dealership contacted, tow truck picked up vehicle.

29 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/27/2003

At least twice a week my car takes 2-5 tries to start. After it starts, it runs very rough and feels like it's going to stall. . . Sometimes it does if I'm at a light. I have a stick shift and there's no indication on the idle that it's running low. My car has been in the shop more than I've had it for the last six months. Ford tells me they haven't received any complaints like this and the dealership has told Ford they can't replicate the problem. . . Even though they've told me on a couple of occasions that they have. Usually they don't replace anything but so far they've replaced my egr valve, fuel pump, and gas tank. The dealership has been inconsistent on how they document the time my car's been in the shop and with a one year old and a four year old. . . I can no longer take time to go to the shop. . . Not to mention lossed time at work. I actually like my car but I need it to start and they obviously can't fix it. This has been a frustrating experience and we will no longer purchase Ford vehicles because of the lack of cooperation from both the dealership and Ford. We've bought an f-150, explorer, and the Focus from the same dealership. . . I guess our money was just a drop in the bucket for them and in the long run customer don't really matter. I don't know what to do about the car except to try for the lemon law. . . But since the dealership has chosen to lie and say they can't replicate the problem, who knows how that will turn out.

30 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/17/2003

I have a 2001 Ford Focus which is stalling in traffic. The motor accelerates while driving, making the transmission shift hard while driving. The vehicle drops speed while driving without any indications. Vehicle stalls if the air conditioner is turned on when the outside temperature is 75 degrees or more. This problem has been going on with the car three weeks after purchasing the car may, 2002. And to date, April 19, 2003, it continues. The vehicle has been serviced numerous times for the dash lights blinking which also caused the car to stall in traffic when temperatures above 75 degrees. During the winter months the car did not have stalling problem, only the lights blinking. Since the weather is getting warmer, the vehicle is stalling with the above problems again.

31 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

34 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/17/2002

While moving in very heavy stop & go traffic on freeway, engine suddenly & without warning lost power & stalled. No warning lights, no engine codes. 3 occupants, a/c on, 95 degree f outside temp, 1/2 tank fuel. Engine restarted after several attempts but could not develop power to accelerate. Engine continually stalled. 45 minutes later after a tow to nearest Ford dealership, engine started & ran normally. Dealership test drove, inspected & performed diagnostic tests. Found no codes, no problems.

35 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 03/08/2002

Have had numerous problems with the car hesitating and stalling. Have taken the car in a total of 7 times. 5 of which were related to hesitation. 3 of the those 5 times they found problems with the car. 2 times for an egr emissions sensor and 1 for a fuel pump (they think). The other two times they coulndt find anything wrong at the time. I have called Ford directly and they can do nothing about the car, because they say it is repairable. I have had the car back now for a little over a week since they have replaced the fuel pump. Seems to have a little hesitation still, but has not stalled. We have had the left rear tire replace once for cupping of the tire. Ford dealership wasnt sure what caused it, but they say I could have run over something hard. The new tire starting cupping like the one they replaced, then that is when the recall for the rear wheel bearings was issued. No problems since then with the tires.
