1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2017 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

Driving on interstate-95, when oil pressure light illuminated, at first very dim, and then within an 1/8 of a mile, lost all power and the engine began to sound like a tank. Pulled over to shoulder and tried to re-start the vehicle with no luck. Brought vehicle to Ford dealership and was advised of a service bulletin of a timing belt failure and I was to replace the engine long block and turbo. Seems ridiculous that I had to spend out of pocket money to replace a known failure at 67,000 miles when according to service manual, inspect timing belt at 150,000 miles. I want justice and a full refund for this issue. This issue has also caused a streamline of failures within the vehicle due to disruption of seals amongst most of my rubber lines.

2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2017 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/02/2021

2017 Ford Focus s, shudders/shakes when accelerating from a full stop. The car acts as if the transmission is slipping. The car is parked and I refuse to move it until this issue is addressed. Ford needs to fix this issue or issue everyone who owns this vehicle a full refund or a different model! this is not safe and can cause serious injuries to anyone driving it, especially on a highway or beltway at a great amount of speed and the car refuses to accelerate without shuddering or shaking.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/20/2019

On my way home, the car began to make a clickety clackety noise. It sounded like a belt was out of alignment. I pulled into the driveway and popped the hood. I watched the bottom gear wheel break off the engine. The engine immediately stopped. Had I been on the road, it could have been tragic. In the attached photo, you can see the metal ripped clean off at all three locations.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/19/2017

I have an 2008 Ford Focus se I bought in 2016 and have had problems with passenger seat belt not locking in place, doors not locking/unlocking passenger side, and the biggest problem I have experienced twice is the engine revvening up and making strange noises like it is going to blow up the car does not increase with speed but engine revs and when braking the rev will speed up then decrease to break. Please recall before I get into an accident!!!!!.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

Twice pulling on to a busy hwy my car has stalled/shuddered, and lost power. Both times heat gauge sky rocketing. The last time my car turned off entirely, and had over heated. However it had only been in operation for about 5 min. Both times on a busy hwy. First time I took it in, they said it was a module update. Two weeks later it happened again and worse. I was able to limp my car into the dealership after letting it sit for 5 minutes. They replaced gaskets, and blew them on their test drive. Replaced a hose and gaskets again. My car was returned to me two days ago, and less than 50 miles later, the check engine light came on. The coolant was half full, and in the course of roughly 30 minutes of operation it had gone through half of the coolant. Yet there is no trace of a leak on the ground. In addition to all of that, on the first fix the ac had cut out twice which since they have claimed to have fixed. With all of this, it had created quite a fowl smell in my car as a result. My car at this point, my car has been in the shop 21 business days (not including saturdays. . Which they work), the issues started mid August and it is now October 7th. They offered to give us the car back and that it was "just an air bubble". Despite the check engine light being on and excessive loss of coolant. My car has been in motion each time it has had an issue. The first issue I was just pulling on to the hwy, so was just attempting to accelerate. The second time I had reached the hwy speed of 55 mph. (separate incident, they also had to replace a faulty seatbelt).

9 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Focus. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost power. As a result, another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle. The air bags deployed and smoke fumes were noticed. The passenger received a neck injury from the seat belt and the child bit their tongue upon impact. The contact was also injured and transported to the hospital by ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was unknown.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/04/2016

When I first purchased the car I had issues from the start. I would press on the gas and the car would hesitate to go forward and then jerk. It felt like I was driving a manual car but I had an automatic. I found out that there was a recall on the car for this specific reason. I took the car to my local Ford dealer in clarksville in and had to wait over 3 weeks for the part to come in. I was not offered a loaner car or anything. Once I got the part it was ok for like literally maybe 1 or 2 months and the issues arose again. I took the car back and was told it was the last time I would be able to get the issue fixed for free. This all happened in 2016. It is now 2019 and I am still having the same issues. Also the passenger side seatbelt works intermittently. And the car doors do not always latch tightly when you shut the door. I have been told several times that there is nothing that can be done. Now I am stuck still making payments on a car that I do not feel safe driving. I did have a wreck in the car back in 2016 where I was pushing on the gas and it jerked really hard and then went forward violently and I hit a pole. The damage is still on my car which includes a busted front bumper and the car horn is not working.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

While driving on the beltway the car stalls and shuts off and will not restart. This has happened several times and once a truck just missed me trying to coast to the emergency lane. It has been to two shops that say nothing is wrong. Today I had it towed to the dealership and I found the other complaint here on this site while looking for recalls. This is an extremely dangerous failure and these ignitions missing a screw should be recalled before someone is injured or killed.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/03/2015

On January 27th. . My car (2012 Ford Focus se 4door 5 speed) my car had 33,342 miles on it once it came into the service bay at asheville Ford in asheville nc. I was advised that the car would have to stay for the day and look into the situation. Car would die at random, lights would come on like a christmas tree (oil pressure light, battery light, traction light, esc light, information light, check engine light) and a message would appear (engine malfunction service now). Asheville Ford was also notified of a sun visor popping, seat belts not releasing and creaking noises in the b pillars on both sides, and the ac was blowing hot air again (this was repaired on the 23rd before and already blowing hot air).

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

My email to avis is as follows: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ avis customer service custserv@avis. Com contract # 200916934 car Ford Focus 2014 rental tampa airport date: June 18 2014 dear avis I rented a Ford Focus to drive across the state to stuart, FL from tampa airport I left around 1 am. The car bucked and sputtered once on the beltway I 275 surrounding tampa. At higher speed the engine seemed to settle down. I used state rt 70, an often single lane road to cross the state going through acacia and okeechobee. At red lights, the car stalled out twice. This on a dark single lane road is very dangerous. I used the emergency flasher to warn two large trucks come at me on the single land behind me. When I dropped the car off the afternoon of June 18, I reported the stalling out to the office person julia at avis on federal highway, stuart she told me the Focus has a habit of sputtering and bucking and asked if I knew about that. I said I did not know about the condition but that this car stalled out. I said this was very dangerous on a dark road. I had two incidents that night with large semi?s coming at me stalled as the light turned green. She said she would write up this concern in comments to avis. In my view, a car that can stall out is similar to the gm cars that stopped with a defective key. Thirteen people have been killed in those gm stall outs. I will sent this safety concern to avis management, the national highway transportation association and to Ford, which so far has not had any key recalls. If the Focus stalls out or misfires, this seems like a similar safety issue. Ford should remedy the Focus stall out and avis may not to consider letting the Focus out as a rental.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/24/2014

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle made a loud noise coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the motor mounts fractured. As a result, the engine dropped and damaged the axle and cvc joint. In addition, the contact stated that the passenger's side seat belt was constantly becoming stuck preventing the passenger from exiting the vehicle in a timely fashion. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 92,000.

16 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2007 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

My car was in a single vehicle accident as we hit a power pole head on going at least 50 mph. I wasn't the driver. At impact both the driver and myself had our heads crash into the dashboard. The driver smashed his head into the steering wheel and I hit the area above the glove box. My head also hit the passenger door. The car caught on fire and burned completely to the ground. My concerns are that with an accident of that magnitude, not a single airbag deployed in the car. All 4 passengers received multiple severe injuries. I'm aware that in some situations air bags can make things worse, but in this case I'm sure that the airbags should have deployed and would have been better than us violently slamming our heads and faces onto the dashboard and steering wheel. I'm also interested in seeing why the seat belts didn't constrict us from moving that far forward.

20 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/20/2008

1. Two days before the engine died I noticed it was having problems starting first thing in the morning, like a sputtering. Then it would go away and the car would drive fine. The car had a transmission fluid leak and so I continued to make sure it was at the right levels. 2. The day when the engine died it had been running normally. I had stopped at the store. When I got back in my car and turned it on the engine made a popping noise and then the engine "turned over" and started making a thwaping noise, like cardboard in contact with a fan blade. After towing it to a mechanic (it wouldn't start, it kept making thud-ish thwaping noises), who had worked for Ford previously, he said that the 4th piston had broke and was grinding on the side of the engine block (he had taken a look at the timing belt - ok- and was testing the gears that the timing belt attached to. 3 turned with the right torque but the final one at the bottom of the engine block didn't turn unless torque greater than what was normally needed was applied. When it turned there was a thwap sound inside the engine). What made me wonder is he said that this always happened with this model on the single overhead cam engines at around 90 to 120 thousand miles. He said that he repaired numerous similar incidents with this type of engine, even guaranteeing that opening up the engine would show that the 4th piston (farthest on the right facing the front) broke. I hate to think what would have happened if I had gotten on the freeway and the piston had broke. 3. The cost to replace with a new oem engine was more than the value of the car if I were to personally sell it (based on kelly blue book) and so was the cost for a used engine ($1200 was the lowest, compared to the duel overhead cam engines for the Focus which I found used for $500. Seems the demand for that style engine is high). I have not repaired it. I am considering selling it to a scrap yard.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/15/2007

I am the second owner of this vehicle the day after I purchased the 2001 Ford Focus the engine light came on and I had loss of power. I took it back to the dealership and they replaced some parts and also had replaced a few recalled parts. The engine at that time had 78,000 miles on it. I have owned the car for a year and a half it currently has 128,000 miles on it now and had to replace serveral parts which are oxygen sensors catalyc converter, struts, shocks and idle pulley. I get my oil changes and tune ups on a regular basis. One morning went to start my car to go to work and it would not start. It was acting as if it had run out of gas but I had over a half of tank of gas in it. After trying to start it it finally started and was making a horrible rattling noise in the engine. It ran for about 15 seconds then died. I left it alone then called a tow truck to take it to an autorepair shop and had a diagnostic test done on it. I was told that a bearing had broke off and hit my third cylinder and smashed my spark plug. It also hit the piston and the piston was cracked. There were no warning signs and I would not have had a clue that there was anything wrong with my car. The auto repair place said the I was lucky that it happened at home and not while I was driving because it could have been very dangerous. I am now having to get a remanufactured engine costing me $3,300. Which I have to have financed. Is there any thing that I can do?.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 04/03/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Focus. The engine light would illuminate and the vehicle would stall, stutter, skip, and not run when the tank reached a quarter tank. Initially, the contact was informed that the cylinder head needed to be replaced. Then she was informed that the timing belt, gear, pulley, and tensioner needed to be replaced. The components were replaced. Finally, the contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Ford stated that the vehicle was manufactured too late to be included in NHTSA campaign id number 03v482000 (fuel system, gasoline). The purchase date and speed were unknown. The current mileage was 88,000 and failure mileage was 83,073. Updated 03-04-08 \the fuel pump was replaced.

23 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 02/20/2007

Engine malfunctioned: Ford Focus se year 2000. Purchased from omar car sales in fremont (510)-770-0107 I thought it was the battery. When I came out of raley's at about 4:50 pm, I could not start my car. It was making a clicking sound only. (1) just had major work some of the timing belt, a motor mount, and spark plugs, all new Ford parts were used as replacements. The car had been in excellent condition beforehand. I had only purchased the car a little over a year ago from omar car sales for $6,000. 00, and it was running fine till 3 months ago, when the timing belt went then got fixed in one week. One minor problem with an ignition switch was found when I 1st bought the car, also very minor. (2) butch's automotive inc in fremont, 510-793-9883 found problem, (the valve seat inside the engine collapsed and failed, pistons came down, ruined my entire motor including oil on parts in process) I reported it to NHTSA, they said I also needed to contact the dealership, and manufacturer of which I did. Nhtsa said that if the dealership didn't do anything, to file a complaint. I spoke with jose in service at fremont Ford within 24 hours. He said contact the manufacturer, but the manufacturer tried to claim that there weren't any recalls. I think there are, and if not, I would like a discreet recall started. (3) butch said the cost of repair will be $5,200. 00 for all the damages engine wise, plus a re-built engine being installed. I would like all costs reimbursed to me, as this was a safety hazard. Had this happened on the freeway, I might have died when other cars crashed into my stalled vehicle. I had recalls done at fremont Ford, and my recalls were up to date. Butch says he was able to get a newly rebuilt Ford engine to newark , CA dealership, and my malfunctioned engine was returned to that dealership. (510)-651-5600. I alerted responsible parties of this matter in Ford, local and factory wide.

24 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 01/07/2006

Piston in transmission deteriorated causing shift solenoid and value body to go bad at 71,000 miles, front drivers seat belt will not unbuckle, rear seat belts will periodically not buckle, now blowing massive amounts of smoke, rims are seized when trying to change tires, no matter if it was just taken off 5 minutes previously to takeoff; ignition seized and ending up having to rebuild steering column.

25 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 07/17/2005

As vehicle warms up, there is a whining noise that comes from the rpms being higher. It almost feels as if it's belt or power steering related, but there is no loss of steering power. Also, there seems to be no loss of power anywhere else. When parking the vehicle where a turn is involved, at very low speeds, the noise is "feeling" in the wheel is a bit exaggerated. I took my vehicle to jerome duncan Ford (in sterling heights, mi) for service yesterday and they told me that the noise is "normal operating" noise. I don't buy it and told them I'd definitely be back if something went wrong.

26 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 05/27/2005

Focus 2002 started to run rough around 40,000 miles. Had a major tune up 2 x's in 6 months. Changed all the plugs, wires, oil & fluids, still handled rough like it needed to be timed. Focus's have no timing belt. I took it in & was told the plug wire ran over the block was the causing the rough idl, due to the cable melting on the block. I replaced the cable & again the idle was still rough, but now started to surge & miss also. Driving @ various speeds, conditions & roads & still it would surge & miss fire & then drive on. Took it in & told with no light showing & unless it could repeat the surge/miss nothing it could be done. Less than a month later the batter died on a trip out of town. Checked the battery & full of corriosion. Bought a new battery & checked the electrical system told nothing wrong again. After a year of surging/missing (at least 1 a week) the car died again & we thought it was the battery. The battery tested & was told it is the alterator, bought a new one. We then did an oil change. We took it in & ask them agian about the surging & miss & asked if it could be checked when they did the oil. Was advised that it could be the fuel injectors but with out the check engine or oil light on that there was no way to know for sure. Two days later was driving on the freeway & all the lights on the dash light up, felt like there was no power when the gas pedal was pressed, at that point exited the freeway, almost got to the exit & the whole car stalled out, walk home about 4-5 miles. Back over to jumped it, it started up with a new clackety clack in the motor, did not drive at all, I towed it back to the mechanics who did the oil & tested it. I was told on Friday 5/27 that they think it might be a vualve or a engine tap. Please help.

27 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 10/07/2004

Since buying this car in October 2000, I have had 4 fuel pump replacements. The car is now on its 5th fuel pump, and the problem the fuel pump replacement is supposed to correct is still happening. The car still has trouble (especially in wet or humid weather) with sputtering and jolting/surging. Most recently it has been getting worse and worse. Luckily the surging has (of yet!) not caused me to have an accident. Right now the car is in for a timing belt replacement (!) which was replaced incorrectly and now I have cylinder head issues.

32 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 09/15/2003

I purchased my 2000 Ford Focus se from merlin motors in saskatoon. Production date - may 2/2000, stock no. Pp24941, r. O. No. 155631. I believe this car was previously owned by someone in british columbia. Here is a chronological breakdown of repairs. April 17/01 - took car in because driver mirror vibrated badly when driving - so badly that I could not look into it, it was shaking that much. Also, the trunk would not open from the release inside the car. Parts were ordered at this time. Vehicle kilometers- 32854. June 19/01 - they checked for driver mirror vibrating when driving and replaced driver side exterior mirror. The also checked for trunk not opening from the release inside the car, they replaced the trunk stop and adjusted. Vehicle kilometers- 35222 June 20/01 - they checked for power steering leak and replaced steering rack and set toe. Vehicle kilometers- 37782?? (this is obviously an error - I know I did not drive 2, 560 km in one day!) I also did not complain about the power steering and don't recall why my car was in there at the time. Sept 21/01 - they repaired rattle in right front going over bumps, tightened all assemble bolts in front end, removed right caliper and rotor, lubed all bushing, adjusted front splash shields, found tie rod bolt loose and tightened. They also fixed molding on window belt, which was loose and checked inside rear view mirror and found it flawed - part on order. Vehicle kilometers- 43170. Nov 3/01 - we were driving in saskatoon when engine started to boil. We knew this because of steam coming from the hood, all gauges in the car read normal! we took car to merlin - they could find nothing wrong with the car after their checks, and told us to bring it back if it happened again! work order for this date states: customer saw steam coming from under hood, antifreeze pooled on engine, gauge read normal, steam coming from overflow tank - fill with a/freeze, pressure test for leaks, no leaks found.

Failure Date: 07/22/2003

Car made squealing sound from the engine compartment. They checked, and found that serpentine belt was loose. They replaced under warranty at 31500, but it is totally rare for a serpentine belt to go bad that early.

35 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Ford Focus

Failure Date: 12/15/2002

I purchased a 2001 Ford Focus se 4-door sedan in November 2002. The car was a manufacturer buy-back from the original owner and had a small warranty left. At the end of November 2002, I brought the car back to the dealership to have the spark plugs, spark plug wires and a faulty belt replaced. At the end of December 2002, the car was making a strange noise and the engine light was on, so I returned the car to the dealership. A day or so before my appointment with the dealership, I received a recall notice from Ford regarding the pinch bolt. Unfortunately, I received that recall notice too late the faulty pinch bolt had already failed and caused so much damage to the rack and pinion that it had to be replaced. I have since replaced the front brakes. I also experienced a faulty valve in the heating system that was allowing water to flow into the car's cabin and soak the carpeting. Getting to the transmission problem, about a week ago, the car refused to accelerate going up a hill and instead the engine revved. No matter what I tried, I could not get the car to accelerate past 30 mph. Since the car is now long past its small manufacturers warranty, I had an independent mechanic look at the car. He recommended that I flush the transmission and see if that would help the problem. I spent $100 on a transmission flush. That didn't work and the problem continues. I called Ford motor company to complain about the car and to ask for a buyback, but my request was refused. I then took my car to wiscasset Ford. They diagnosed the problem(s) with the car (at no charge). I need a new transmission. They gave me two options for payment. 1) pay for the new transmission out-of-pocket, estimated cost at $2500 - $3000; 2) buy an extended warranty on the drive train for $500. I am planning on purchasing the extended drive train warranty which will allow wiscasset Ford to replace my transmission and will also give me an extra 15k miles for the drive train.
