Ford Focus owners have reported 9 problems related to transmission gear indicator (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Focus based on all problems reported for the Focus.
Vehicle intermittently loses all propulsion, both while in motion or after accelerating from a stop. I've had it happen both during city commutes and during a turn. Throughout these episodes, the gear indicator on the dashboard goes from highlighting the current drive ("d") gear, or in some cases the reverse ("r") gear or parking mode ("p"), to nothing at all. When the gas pedal is pushed while this is happening, the engine will rev, but vehicle will not move. User won't even have a chance to pull over since it will stop dead. Episodes are usually brief, averaging a couple minutes, however when this does happen it can cause an accident due to a sudden decrease of speed. As for what specific system is at fault, I'm uncertain specifically, though believe either the power train or main computer (esp. Dealing with gear shifting) is malfunctioning.

The vehicle is short shifting and missing gears when at a stoplight. When the vehicle is hot, there are more issues. There is a lot of jerking and transmission shudders when taking off; feels like it doesn't want to go.

I was driving through town,a few seconds after taking off from the traffic light the light went out around my d gear and the car slipped into neutral,I put the shifter into drive where it locked up,I turned the ignition swith off and a minute later turned the car back on,the gear light reappeared and I drove it another minute till it happened again ,I was able to get to a parking lot doing this over and over again. The car has been in the shop for one month now and cant seemed to be fixed,,I could have been killed if I had been on a major highway. . The engine does not seem to be affected by this problem. . .
While driving in open country, vehicle suddenly shut off. After approximately 15 minutes the vehicle could be restarted. Drove the vehicle approximately 10 additional miles after restart and then the vehicle suddenly coasted as if in 'neutral" even though gear shift was in "drive" position. This time the gear indicator light flashed and the engine continued to run with the vehicle in "drive. " shut off vehicle. Shut off the engine. After approximately 10 minutes, restarted the vehicle and drove remainder of trip without incident. Next day while driving in local country traffic, vehicle again coasted and appeared to shift to "neutral" without warning. Gear indicator light flashed and engine continued to run even though shift lever was in "drive. " had vehicle towed to dealer for service.

In July I purchased a new 2014 Ford Focus for my son. Immediately he complained about it being sluggish and it shifted when it shouldn't and didn't shift when it should. In August he was involved in an accident when he backed into a parked car. The event cost me $525. He shifted from reverse to drive and pressed the accelerator but his car kept rolling back until it struck a car. Last week was the first time my wife or I drove his car. When she returned she said that she would never drive the car again. She reported the same transmission and shifting problems my son had mentioned. When I drove it to the dealer I put the car in reverse and backed out of the driveway. After I was in the street and totally stopped I put the car in forward and pressed the accelerator. Nothing happened. I checked the gear indicator and pressed the accelerator again. Nothing happened. After sitting iin the the middle of the street for several seconds the car finally moved. It was very sluggish and within the first 100ft. It shifted at least 3 times. Performance like this continued every time I started from a dead stop. I spoke with the service rep about what I had just experienced. He said that the transmission was doing exactly what Ford says it was designed it to do. He said he had personally scheduled over 20 2014 Focus cars into the shop to check the transmission because of the same complaints. He said Ford has a set of tests and if the car passed those tests they wouldn't do anything. He said every 2014 Focus he and the other 7-8 reps had scheduled for the tests had, by Ford's instructions, passed the tests. I sincerely request that you force Ford to do a recall on these cars. Noting the large number of complaints the cars obviously have very serious safety issues, especially their failure to shift when the driver takes the action to make them shift.

When exiting grocery store parking lot, as we pulled out into traffic, the car experience a sudden loss of acceleration/drive train power, while electrical systems started to flash, and electronic gear indicator transitioned from gear to gear. Rpms, were still registering and on acceleration, drive train was unresponsive. This happened all while in traffic, when oncoming vehicles were approaching. We turned on hazard lights and moved to the road shoulder. Powered off car for a minute, then restarted. Car started but still experienced severe hesitation on acceleration, and seemed as if it was struggling to stay on. Pulled onto a side street to get out of traffic, then after turning car off, it would not turn back on. After approx. 10 minutes, tried to turn on car again, and it started. Was able to carefully drive car home, however check engine light has now been illuminated. This will be the 5th instance (all instances documented by dealer, and serviced by dealer) that the car has had this issue, and we have brought it to the attention of the dealership, with no 100% remedy being given. Will be taking car in once again to dealership for service and hopefully resolution of this ongoing issue of hesitation on acceleration, and total failure of drive train during vehicle operation.
Car's transmission felt sluggish (hesitate to accelerate) after 15-20 minutes of low-speed driving (0-10mph) in a traffic jam. Ten minutes later, engine stalled on freeway at 70mph. Tachometer dropped to 0 and speedometer displayed was 0. Car restarted, and continued to be driven for 15 minutes. Gear disengaged when turning into a parking space, car rolled backwards. Power did resume after 2 seconds while constantly giving gas. Restarted the car after around 30 minutes, car stalled again few minutes later. Engine would not restart instantly. Only clicking noise was heard in the engine bay when turning keys. Waited 10-15 minutes to restart. Car accelerated to 70mph before stalling again after 1-2 minutes. Gear indicator was flashing. When the car stalled, engine raved with lost of power for 1-2 seconds. Car felt like in neutral even shifter was in drive. Tachometer then dropped to 300rpm and never rav again. Car was pulled over. The cycle of stalling and restart repeated 5-6 times until I arrived home. The next day car was drivable again (I only have a 5-mile commute). Similar troubles occurred three weeks ago when car was totally disabled after 20-30 minutes parking lot driving. Car hardly restart and refuse to go into gear. Gear indicator constantly blinked. I previously thought the issues were related to the usage of s gate, where it happened for two instance. There are 3 occurrences of similar troubles. First time was about a month ago when car refused to start, but it was perfectly drivable again after being cool down for a night. Towed to dealer but problem could not be duplicated. The reason that prompts me to write this report is due the lost of power on freeway which I believe is a safety related issue. Also, there doesn't seem to be a trouble code in the computer, which makes it hard for dealers to diagnose the problem.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Ford Focus titanium. The contact stated that while attempting to push on the accelerator pedal, the vehicle lost power. The engine and gear switch light illuminated. The door chime sounded. The vehicle started nearly 15 minutes later. The failure recurred on two other occasions. The manufacturer was contacted and not remedy was offered. The private mechanic diagnosed the vehicle as a computer failure. The failure mileage was 53,000 the current mileage was 53,000.
