1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2021

I received an alert for power steering assist fault and immediately had no power steering. Now I have to purchase a rack & pinion assembly for the car because no longer safe to drive. I see where you all have already completed an investigation but Ford states they have not completed theirs. How long does this take? this part and labor to have this completed is very expensive!.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2020

The rack and pinion is starting to get hard and making noise. My steering is not functioning as it suppose to be. Engine is starting to shake while on red light. My a/c doesn't work and lights do not work from the inside.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2020

My power steering went out on the highway I purchased the car with no problems maybe a wheel alignment now my power steering isn't working and in order to fix it the car shops are saying replace the entire rack and pinion which is expensive. I have also looked up this issue and many people share this same issue and nothing is being done about it.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

I was driving my 2010 Ford Fusion se on a highway and suddenly the steering wheel locked up and became extremely difficult to turn. I was fortunate enough to be able to turn into a local shopping mall. An alert popped up in the dash that said service electrical power steering. I called my local Ford service company and the service technician explained that this was a recall on the rack and pinion/ steering gear for my car model. He explained to me that this was a recall and unfortunately a common issue with the vehicle I had. However, I found out that my VIN was not included in this recall, and was informed that I would have to pay for the repairs myself. I called the Ford company and explained to them the issue thinking that they would simply add my vehicle and I was told that my VIN wasn't included. I explained to them how they could call my local dealership where my car was being repaired to confirm what I said was true, however, I was told they wouldn't do that. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the supervisor called a day later. She told me that at this time my car would not be added to the recall. I asked her how and why they came to this conclusion and she informed me that this was protocol. I asked her if they did any research into why my VIN was not added the first time, or double checked to see if there was an oversight as to why my VIN was not added and she told me that they did not look into my issue or claim, she just listened to the call, and called me back to inform me that at this time the would not add my car to the recall list. I asked her who decided to add the vehicles was it Ford or NHTSA and she informed me she did not know. I again ask her how I can get someone to review this issue as this is a serious recall and matter. I explained to her that I could have been on the interstate when the steering went out. She told me to contact NHTSA.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2020

Power steering fails while driving, was on the interstate and it just stopped working. I was able to manually steer vehicle with no power steering, however if this had happened to my wife or daughter they would have lost control, it was not easy. Vehicle has been checked out and the rack and pinion with the electronic power steering is bad. I had this replaced at approx 70k miles and the replacement has now failed. Obviously there is a design flaw.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2020

The vehicle has no power steering or traction control. It is displaying the power steering assist fault and service advance traction control. According to the dealer, the only way to correct the problem is replacing the rack & pinion which is $1400. I've researched a recall on 2011 Fusion's with the same problem. Why is the 2010 excluded? I do not feel the vehicle is safe to drive, but is the only transportation I have. The fault occurs all the time, sitting, driving, etc.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2020

My car was in motion while driving in NY city traffic; the power steering went out and we received the advanctrac / service power steering now message. It was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed replaced. My mechanic told me it was going to cost 400 dollars alone for the part. I looked at this issue online and countless people seem to he having the same issue the 2010 Ford Fusion but Ford has not have a recall for it yet. I'm still driving it, times are hard I cant afford this expense.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2020

Car was parked. Turn the car on and no power steering. Sudden failure. Told to I have to get a new rack and pinion which is over $2000. The power steering came back on after the battery was unplugged over night. Same parts as the recalled 2011 Ford Fusion. Now I am scared to drive this car and the repairs are almost more than the car is worth. 88k miles on it.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

In December of 2018 while car was in motion; the power steering went out and we received the advanctrac / service power steering now message. It was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed replaced so we replaced the rack and pinion. In oct; the power steering went out again while driving and after diagnosis; we had the rack and pinion changed again. In Nov. ; the power steering went out again while driving. This time the mechanic accidentally left his scanner on the car over the weekend and it drained the battery. When the mechanic charged the system and started the car; the message "service power steering now" was gone and the power steering was back. In Dec. The power steering went out again while driving. We once again had the rack and pinion changed. Now it is January 24th and the power steering is gone again. Each time; the driver of this vehicle has been lucky because it has happened at low speeds. If this happened while going around a curve greater than 45 degrees; this driver would not have been able to control the car. Now all we want to do is get rid of the car; unfortunately, we cannot keep the power steering from going out and I will not pass this issue on to someone else.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2019

Car in parking lot. Stared car as normal. Steering wheel locked up and would not move. Turned vehicle off and restarted. Steering now normal. Car was not in motion at the time. Took to Ford dealer (meyers Ford, elkton) they say it needs a rack and pinion assembly. Seems like steering wheel lock did not disengage. Tech at Ford dealer said this was the 2nd car this week with the same problem.

11 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2019

I was driving down the highway on the interstate at a speed limit of 60mph in motion on my way home and it started getting hard to turn my steering wheel which made it hard for me to make a left or right turn when I was exiting the exit. The service power steering popped up on my dashboard and advance trac. So then it ended up changing to say service power steering now which it made it very hard and difficult to even be able to drive my car period. I got a estimated of $1811. 94 for my car to be repaired at wynne Ford at 1020 w. Mercury blvd hampton va 23666 and for me to get a estimate of that price I can't afford to pay that it's like buying a used car at that price. I just find it hard to believe that it's a recall on a 2011-2012 Ford Fusion but not a 2010 when the same exact defect is going on with that same carjis a different year. Which basically I would be paying to get a electrical power steering rack and pinion in order for my car to be able to drive and function correctly.

12 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

Power steering failure while driving 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid on a 65mph highway, coincident with a "service power steering now" message on the dash. Very lucky this was a straight section of road! no prior warning. Recently serviced for air bag recall recently, too. Making matters worse is the exorbitant dealer quote of $2400 to repair by replacing the rack and pinion.

13 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

This has happened twice , driving home from all my lights come on and the service advancetrac lights up , all gauges quit working ( speedometer , tach , temp , gas ) but engine never dies or hesitates , once home and shut car off , it will go into auto theift mode with the rapid blinking light and will not start!!! first time it happen I was able to drain the battery system and get it started and to a Ford dealership , being that it has to be scanned cause of the no communication with the Ford ids software which I do not have!!! they had it for a few days and checked all modules and connectors and found no issues but problem was gone and no stored codes!!! picked car up and 2 days later on my way home from work same issue , all dash lights come on , service advancetrac and no communication all over again , get car home and right back into rapid blinking theft mode and no start , this time I could not get it started and towed it back to dealership , this time they are saying they think it might be the power sterring module which is no serviceable part built into the trw rack and pinion that has been built since 2008 for these Fords but only 2011-2012 Fusions where issued a recall on this part!!! dealership said that the problem is gone again and they did some work on the wiring on harness but said it will probably come back and need a new rack and penion put in!!! I have no problem with this dealership , my problem is why Ford is not taking care of a known problem that has caused complete sterring failure and wrecks , my reserach has found that trw build this rack and penion since 2008 for the Fusion as well as other similar models , but only recall on a few models!!! this needs to be a broader recall , this is our main family car and now I am boarder line scared to drive it until I know 100% it is fixed and safe to drive and can't afford to replace it right now!!.

14 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While the vehicle was parked, "power assist failure" appeared on the instrument panel and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was towed to larry h. Miller Ford Lincoln draper (located at 11442 lone peak pkwy, draper, ut 84020, (801) 590-0561) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 84,000.

15 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

While driving down the road at speed limit of 55mph the power steering went out on the car. With no warning. Took it to r & c mechanic diagnostics said it the rack and pinion. They replaced it. . Two days later the exact same problem while driving. Again with no warning. Mechanic is replacing the part but was told by the parts dealer that this a problem with the 2010 Fusion and it very likely could happen again. He was surprised there was no recall. Is Ford waiting for a certain amount of people to be maimed or killed before they recall and fix this problem???.

16 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2019

I was going home from work, sitting at a stop light on a city street, a "power steering assist fault" light came on. When the light turned green, I tried to turn to continue to the following street, well I couldnt. My steering wheel was locked, so now, here I was stuck in the middle of the intersection with cars honking, how embarrassing! well since I know a little bit about cars, I turned the car off and re-started it, the steering wheel was still stiff, I had to jerk and put my body weight to get a little of leverage and turn it a little, I managed to get off the street and park it, tow truck came and got it. Should I have filed a police report? what if it would of locked up going on the highway I take to work every day? now my car is parked at home waiting for answers. If my shop fixes it, will I get reimbursed? its urgent. I understand there is a pending recall, but how long is it going to take to process the recall? my car is a model with elec. Assist rack and pinion. My car only has 107,000 miles.

17 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While driving approximately 40 mph, the service auto trac and service power steering messages suddenly displayed. Moments later, the service steering now message displayed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was towed to casco bay Ford (1213 rt. 1, yarmouth, me) where it was diagnosed that the steering rack and pinion was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 217,000. The VIN was invalid.

18 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. When the vehicle was started, the power steering assist failed warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that the electronic rack and pinion and steering gear failed and needed replacement. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.

19 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

While operating vehicle, steering system displayed error on driver information center and vehicle became difficult to steer. Luckily was able to get off the road with no personal injury. Diagnosis of the problem is that the entire rack and pinion steering assembly must be replace because of a failure of the electronic motor that is not serviceable. The repair is an expensive repair as the replacement unit is expensive. My concern is that this is a true safety issue. My research shows that Ford changed the steering assembly part way through the production of this model year. This implies that they knew there was an issue and took steps to address. This changed assembly was later used on the remaining 2010 and carried through to the 2011 and 2012 model years that were later recalled because of issues with this steering assembly. Your organization identified a safety issue with the 2011 and 2012 model years yet chose to ignore the 2010 model year. There are thousands of failures on the 2010 model year. Help me understand the rationale for not classifying this as a safety issue.

20 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While accelerating in reverse, the steering wheel failed and the contact lost control of the vehicle. In addition, the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the rack and pinion and the power steering module needed to be repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notififed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 115,000.

21 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2019

My car has 200800 miles on it, my electric rack and pinion has been replaced 3 times and just last month it went out while going 65mph on the highway, I cut off a semi truck and some cars and almost tboned the cement barrier. I complained to Ford for a second time regarding the electronic steering rack and since it is not recalled it is unable to be replaced. Most of the people in the call center are not fluent in english so its near impossible to get issues resolved. The part is made in new mexico and my only alternative is to purchase a refurbished rack. I refuse to buy this rack because its a known issue with Ford Fusions and most people who have had this issue have gotten into serious accident or near misses such as myself. The car currently sits at the autoshop while I drive a rental until I can afford to buy the 1300 part and have Ford charge me an additional 1150 to install it. The steering grinds and sticks or freezes in one direction. If a class action lawsuit is ever filed through Ford for failed products, then sign me the hell up.

22 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. Upon starting the vehicle, the steering wheel failed to move. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided reference number: cas-15887066. The failure mileage was 105,000. The VIN was not available.

23 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2018

Takata recall. Stationary vehicle. Power steering locked. Turned off and came back few hours later, turned on and it worked perfectly. Again in stationary vehicle, started engine and power steering locked. Turned off and came back few hours later , turned on engines and it worked perfectly. I decided that this was a major safety issue and drove to Ford dealer. Message on screen was power steering assist fault both times. They gave me an estimate for $2600 + to replace lower control arms and rack and pinion assembly with no mention of any repair or replacement of power steering assembly. And Ford has a recall out for 2011 and 2012 Fusions with the exact same power steering assembly, having the exact same problems.

24 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2018

The exact same problem for which 2011-2015 Ford Fusions were recalled is a major problem for 2010. I am replacing my rack and pinion as a result of a total power steering failure. This is a severe safety issue and could have resulted in loss of life during the failure. There was no warning that the power steering would fail, and clearly was a problem on model years including and following this one, but 2010 was not included in the recall. Cost to repair is $1700+.

25 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2018

Back in April, my son was driving the car. He was getting off of one highway and merging onto another major highway. While going around the bend, the power steering gave out and he was not able to turn the wheel. He hit the curb, blew the drivers side tire and bounced to the right, where he could have went over into the river below. Thankfully he did not and came out of if safely. No other vehicles were involved. The car had to be towed. I put a case in with Ford, and they denied my claim. No rhyme or reason as when I asked why, they could not tell me. Now just because this is only a specified VIN number recall doesn't mean this cannot happen to the other 2010 Fusions. I had the car towed a few weeks later to a Ford dealership, and they gave me an estimate of 2395. 00 plus tax. Now, that is for the rack & pinion, aka, steering column, tire, clock spring or something and a couple of other things. If the outcome of the accident had been different, Ford probably would have paid for it. All I have driven are Fords, my whole entire family has Fords. So, what is the next step for me to take? I am going to talk to a lawyer to see what my options are.

26 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2018

While driving this car the electric power steering just quit. Making steeringbthis car very difficult in heavy rush hour traffic in atlanta, GA. Also giving electric power steering fault that would not clear. I had to pay Ford $1515 to replace the entire rack and pinion steering system just to use the car again. Why was the model year not part to first recall!!!! ridiculous to have missed this allowed such an error to continue!!! I want to see this recalled immediately!!! it is very dangerous!!!.

27 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

While driving my Fusion on roadway or highway the steering wheel locks up and I can't turn it. After happening twice I had the steering rack and pinion replaced which is what they said the problem was but it has happen again. It caused me 1200. 00 to get this done and problem is still happen. Very upset and scare to drive my Fusion.

28 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2018

While driving my vehicle the service advancetrac warning light came on. My vehicle would not accelerate appropriately and then would not be in gear. I have taken it to the dealer and they replaced sensors etc. They have identified that the steering rack and pinion will need to be replaced. When I researched this I found that this is a common issue for this vehicle and that a recall had in fact been instituted for 2011 and newer models. This is a problem in vehicles from 2010 as well. There is no reason owners of 2010 models should have to pay the expense to fix this dangerous vehicle failure when new model owners do not. The part itself (for aftermarket) costs $1000.

29 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2017

Power steering went out while I was driving and I hit a pole on the highway. Broke my mirror. No other damage. Took my car to Ford and they are telling me that I have 2 wrong size tires on my car and that is the reason why my power steering went out. I have receipts from firestone stating that they put the correct tires on my car. Ford is telling me that they put on the wrong size. My rack and pinion is faulty. Not my tires.

30 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2017

I received a power steering assist failure on the dash readout while backing up in a parking structure. Steering locked up and could not turn steering wheel or change directions. I was able to reset it by turning off and on the ignition. Luckily this didn't happen while driving. Two days later I was able to get the vehicle to Ford service center. Ford dealership later diagnosed this to rack and pinion needing replacement at $1700 parts and labor. They claimed they could get the fault to reoccur while monitoring the computer port. Seem like a safety issue to me. Car is a 2010 and has 118k miles. The service manager and workers were very concerned that we drove the car tot he dealership. They know of these issues and refuse to acknowledge any assistance to the consumer with warranty or recall. I guess we need a few more dead humans before they take notice.

31 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized and the power steering indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could assist with replacing the parts used for the previous repair. The contact felt as if the repaired part was defective. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

32 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2017

Previously had issue with power steering at about 90,000 miles. Spent $1500. 00 to replace rack and pinion. A little over one year later now reading 155,700 miles I am having the exact same problem. I drive daily on interstate highways pushing 70mph for about an hour at a time. Luckily I was only on a back road when "service power steering now" light came on and I lost all control of steering. Could be killed driving to work when I though I already replace the problem just to have it mess up 50 thousand miles later.

33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2017

Just paid $1658. 00 for the removal and replacement of the rack & pinion in our 2010 Ford Fusion due to an inherent defect of the steering system that occurs around 90,0000 -100,000 miles.

34 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact, a mechanic, stated that there was a sudden loss of power steering, the warning lights flashed to service the eps, and the stability traction control and various warning indicators flashed. The contact had to coast the vehicle over to the side of the road and restart it, but the failure continued. The vehicle was diagnosed by a dealer who indicated that the rack and pinion needed to replaced. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed a leak from the air conditioner drain on top of the steering gear. It was diagnosed that the steering wheel angle sensor in the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The contact indicated that the dealer's mechanical diagnosis was a sufficient solution to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

While I was backing out of my driveway, the power steering suddenly failed. I turned off the ignition, restarted the car, and the power steering worked again. Although I had no further troubles with it, later that week I brought the car to a Ford dealership for a diagnostic. They confirmed that the rack-and-pinion steering needed to be replaced, or the power steering could fail again at any time without notice. It was an approximately $2,000 repair job. The car had fewer than 42,000 miles on it at the time of the incident.
