37 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

My daughter was driving home from work last night made a turn and the power steering locked up, the dash went dark and it displayed a power assist failure, she stopped the car, turned the ignition off then on and the power steering worked so she could get home. On the way to dropping the car off at the repair shop the power steering failed again. This is a very serious problem with this 2010 Ford Fusion the power steering has fallen not once but twice, we replaced the power steering rack and pinion 3 years ago at 69,460 miles. The repair shop just called and the diagnostic code is that the power steering rack and pinion has failed again at 98,000 miles. I called fair oaks Ford and they said they haven't had any issues like I descripted but you can see on the website that there are hundreds of issues. Why hasn't there been a recall for this problem.

38 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

Power steering locked up at very low speed when making turn; dash went dark, power assist failure displayed. Turned off ignition, then back on and power restored. Repair shop, for the second time in 3 years, replaced power steering rack and pinion unit. 70k miles on this car. Ford recalled 2011 for this but not 2010 yet is very dangerous. Ford refuses to acknowledge problem with 2010 Fusion steering.

39 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

Came out to my car to go out and when I turned it on the dashboard started beeping and an error message came up "service power steering now". The power steering went out and the wheel is stiff now. Last year, I paid 1800 to replace the rack and pinion and now this is happening. I took it to the Ford dealer and they want 2000 to fix this problem.

40 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2016

As I pulled out of a gas station (turning right), the 'service advance trac and power steering' warning came on. I was able to make it home, with extreme difficulty. Unable to turn the wheel, I did almost hit another vehicle as it went out while driving. The next morning, steering was completely gone, I couldn't even move it an inch, and had to be towed to a mechanic. After two days of diagnostics and trying to figure out what was going on, the mechanic was not able to figure out what was wrong and simply reset the computer. He said it now is a matter of waiting to see if that happens again, and if it does, he would suggest a new rack and pinion.

41 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while replacing a flat tire on the vehicle, the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that after replacing the tire, the steering wheel became very difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,000.

42 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2015

Shortly after beginning my drive, my car alerted me to "service advancetrac soon" and "service power steering soon". The wheel turned as it did normally so I didn't think I had anything to worry about. I got to a stoplight a little further down the road and thought perhaps a reset would clear the error. I put my car in park, and shut off the engine. When I started it up again, I got a much more urgent sounding ding and my screen said "service power steering now". It was at that point that I had no power steering in the car. It was so difficult to steer that I was worried I might break something, feeling like at any moment the steering wheel was going to snap. Upon reading the complaints and recalls of other Ford Fusions, I am shocked that the 2010 model isn't included in the recall. The only fix for this issue according to Ford is to replace the rack and pinion assembly. My suspision is that the issue is with a sensor that became faulty, and the system turned off power steering to protect itself. However I have heard that because the sensor does not have a part number, it cannot be sold separately from the rack and pinion assembly. I understand components break and wear out, especially in cars, but I think it's insane to have to replace a $1300 part when a $50 component fails.

43 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2015

While driving a message appeared on the instrument panel, "have power steering serviced", within a few seconds "have advance trac system serviced" warning appeared. I shut off the car. Upon restarting the car there was a total failure of the power steering system. It was impossible to drive the car due to the difficulty of turning the steering wheel. I detected a slight burning smell. The car had to be towed to the dealer. Repair invoice states an internal fault of electric power steering. Rack and pinion system had to be replaced. Mileage at the time was 60,402. If this would have happened on the highway or on a busy road there would have been great potential for an accident.

44 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While making a left turn at approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000.

45 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

Driving on I 76 and power steering stopped working a of a sudden. A message came up on the dashboard that said "check advancetrac" " service power steering". The dealer said it's a problem with the computer module and I need a new rack and pinion which will cost me over $1800. 00. There has been numerous complaints about the power steering for Ford Fusion and even recalls regarding the issue on 2011 through 2015, but since my car is a 2010 and is not part of the recall I have to pay out of pocket. It is a major safety concern. When my power steering went out I could barely make turns and had to get a man on the street to park my car because I didn't have the strength to. My 1 year old son was in the vehicle with me when this happened. My car is 5 years old and only has $33000 miles on it and Ford refuses to help me with this expense at all. They are a terrible company who only cares about saving money. They are not even concerned about their customers safety and how this can cause accidents. Sorry Ford all of us don't have $1800 to shell out on repairs that are something that should of never happened in the first place. Do not buy a Ford Fusion! also do not take your car for repair at john kennedy Ford in conshohocken, PA.

46 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2015

My wife was driving the Ford Fusion and an error for "service power steering" came up on her dashboard. She still had power steering and was able to make it to work and park. Upon leaving work, she turned the car on and realized the power steering was completely gone. She could not drive the car because she could not efficiently turn the wheel. I had to go pick her up and at which point I realized I could attempt to steer the car. I was able to make the commute home safely, although the drive was a struggle the entire time. We took the car to a Ford dealership. They were unaware of any common issues. They diagnosed the car needing a new rack and pinion unit (the epas unit). We replaced the rack and pinion, not through Ford because they wanted $1800 we did not have. And the issue is still present. The car not safe to drive. It has been a real inconvenience for my family. The car is 5 years old and this is a major issue. And we still have 3 years left of payments on something that is currently not drive-able.

47 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2015

I was driving home from work, had to stop and drop some items off for my daughter at summer camp. When I was leaving camp the steering felt like it wanted to pull to the right, a few miles down the road all power steering was lost. Service advanc-trac warning message was being displayed on the dash board. I pulled over at a convenient store to investigate the problem, could not find anything. It was raining so I carefully drove home without any power steering. Took car to local dealership where they diagnosed the problem as a rack& pinion failure, total cost to repair $1,641. 00. The dealer stated they had not seen this problem before. After a short search I found hundreds of similar problems reported. I read where this same problem initiated a recall on the 2011 Ford Fusion, but no help referenced to the 2010 Ford Fusions. If they identified the defect in the 2011 models, shouldn't they fix the problem from the previous models with the advance-trac system. No dealer will touch this vehicle with its defect as a trade-in, meanwhile I'm still paying on a car that I can not drive safely.

48 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2015

Driving 2010 Ford Fusion sel v6 home at night at around 70 mph, suddenly message came up "advance track , service power steering now". We had seen this message before. This is the fifth occurrence. The vehicle maintains its steering ability (going 70 mph), but upon arrival at our destination, and the shut off of the engine, all power-steering assist is lost. This has happened five times before. The Ford dealer can clear all of the error messages and the car will have its power steering ability again; however, when the Ford mechanic diagnosed the error messages and the problem, his solution was to replace the electrical rack and pinion steering assist at a cost of $1200 plus labor. I declined, as I am sure that the problem will recur. How do I get rid of this car? how can I sell it and not declare its ugly persistent problem?? why doesn't Ford act on this? the mechanic stated that he didn't know of any other cars with this problem.

49 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

52 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

I had a message pop up that said "advancetrac power steering needs service soon" the night before without any issues but with the thought "I guess I need to call Ford to get a service appointment. The following day I hopped in my car and to my surprise, the message now read "advancetrac power sterring needs serviced now" (it was a Saturday afternoon). The car was now undriveable. I am now still waiting for my car to be serviced because the cost to replace the rack and pinion (electronic power steering) will cost over $1800. Ford will not cover it and I have complained to them several times and all they can tell me is that my warranty expired. Should that had gone out on me Friday night on my way home with my kids in the car, we would've been in big trouble. Major safety issue and cannot understand why a company would not stand behind their product.

53 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

Car had a flat tire, then changed to the spare and started to drive it to get a new tire. Once I started a dashboard notification came up "service advancetrack" and the power steering was gone. The vehicle was nearly impossible to turn. A mechanic replaced the rack and pinion and reset the warning. A few days later the car alerted the same warning and steering assist was gone, mechanic reset the code and the power steering returned. Then 3 days ago, without a flat tire or any notice the power steering went out again making the car nearly impossible to drive again. This time the mechanic said that the code could not be reset due to a component failure.

54 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Backing out of my garage, I got just outside the door and went to turn wheel and found that it was locked up, very hard to turn. A warning message came on about steering fault. Owners manual told me to shut car off and turn on again to fix the problem. I immediately took it to dealership where I was told I had to leave it for 3 days and had an $1800 repair to replace the rack & pinion. I now find this is a common problem in these cars upon searching internet. Car is not old enough to warrant such a costly repair and I'm very glad I wasn't on freeway, trying to change lanes. I contacted Ford and was basically told "too bad".

55 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2014

While driving back home to cincinnati, ohio from lexington, kentucky at approximately 60 mph, my steering wheel stiffened up. I am a small frame woman and it was almost unreal for me to guide myself to safety. I frantically jumped out of my car because I saw my whole life flash before my eyes. I called a friend of mines who came to get me and my car and took it to a repair shop. They quoted a price of $2200 for rack and pinion. A four year old car should not be costing me this amount of money so soon especially after reading these forums and seeing that this has been a problem for a while. Why hasn't a recall been made for this deadly, life-threatening problem? I have a five year old daughter. What if she was in the car with me?!!! thank god she wasn't.

56 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

Just purchased used 2010 Ford Fusion se (6cyl). After 2 days of driving, was on the interstate driving approximately 75 mph and the advance trac light came on. I noticed the power steering was getting stiff. Shortly after a "service power steering" message appeared and it was extremely difficult for me to control my vehicle. I was able to safely pull off to an exit and turned off the vehicle. After about a minute, I turned the vehicle back on. The advance trac light sensor was off but the message appears "service power steering now". The steering wheel was completely locked up and I was unable to drive the vehicle. The dealer I bought this vehicle from towed the vehicle back to their lot and had the problem diagnosed. They were told by Ford that the electric power steering had to be "reset". They "reset" the power steering, the message was cleared and the steering was good. After 2 weeks of driving, again I was on the same interstate going 75 mph and the advance trac light appeared with the message "service power steering. " luckily, I was near an exit and was able to safely park my vehicle at a gas station. The dealer again towed the vehicle back to their shop and is waiting to figure out what to do. I find this extremely dangerous and I'm surprised that a recall hasn't been made for this issue on the Ford Fusions. If you google the problem, you will see multiple forums with people complaining of same issue but all the repairs were different on their Ford Fusions. Either the module was replaced or the power steering rack and pinion was replaced. Of course, none are within warranty and were pretty costly. I saw that a massive recall has been made for this issue in the Ford escapes. I'm not sure if Ford is waiting for multiple fatalities to occur before they address this issue. I hope my complaint helps. Please Ford. . . Issue recall for the Ford Fusions power steering!.

57 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

After a advancetrac steering service warning, the power steering failed coupled with a warning to service power steering. The first incident was on or about June 30th. The Ford dealer replaced the rack and pinion steering system. Subsequently on October 11, 2014 again while driving at low speed, the advancetrac steering system service warning message appeared followed by a loss of power steering and a service power steering warning. The dealer is now indicating that the advancetrac and/or tire pressure sensors may be the cause of the issue. The car is still in the repair shop.

60 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2014

Power steering completely failed and service power steering now came on the dash warning. Later service advancetrac also came on dash warning. Steering very difficult at slow speeds. Likely too difficult for small person to negotiate a parking lot. Car has electric power steering and entire steering rack must be replaced as the failed sensor is not serviceable from actual rack and pinion. Cost of part Ford part ste27 is $1186. 74 plus labor. If part failed in a turn when driver assumes easy steering I could see a problem occurring.
