1 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Mustang. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 22v082000 (back over prevention). The vehicle was dropped off at the dealer for service and remained at the dealer for two days. The contact was then informed that the mechanic in charge of servicing the recall was out sick; the dealer was uncertain if the recall repair had been serviced prior to the mechanic's absence. The contact chose to take possession of the vehicle, and the recall was removed from the vehicle. Recently, the contact stated that the trunk failed to open manually or with the key fob. The contact decided to tie a string to the emergency truck release, which was inserted through the back seat to open the trunk. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, where the contact was informed that the wiring to the trunk and backup camera were all connected. The contact was informed that the trunk failure could lead to a rear-view camera failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 118,000.

2 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/06/2020

Backup camera and trunk brake light do not work due to known flaw in trunk wiring harness design. Wires inside the harness break from opening and closing trunk due to compression. Dealership has repaired once while under warranty by cheaply replacing sections of broken wire and crudely wrapping the entire harness with black electrical tape, however more wires have broken in new locations along the harness. This is a known defect with a technical bulletin published by Ford. However the service department refused to acknowledge that this is an issue common with 15-17 Mustangs. Despite clearly explaining what was wrong, they claimed I would have to pay $125 diagnostic fee because they don't know if the wiring might have been chewed by varmints. .

3 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2016 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/03/2019

I drove up to my gym, got out of my car, locked it as usual so nothing out of the ordinary. Went back out to my car about 30 min later and saw smoke billowing from windows. . . Opened my door passenger side and my glove compartment was the source so I open it and all I saw were flames leaping from the top of the compartment and flames coming outta the air vents. Within minutes the entire glove box compartment as well as the dash itself melted onto the floorboard. Some gentleman found a fire extinguisher and put it out before the fire department even arrived. Im just lucky I wasn't in it but this had to be some manufacture defect in the wiring because I believe that it started above the glove box right were the wire harnesses enter the car through the fire break between the car and engine compartment.

4 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/27/2019

The getrag mt-82 transmission locks me out of 2nd gear when im accelerating hardly for ex. Merging on the highway. Also my Mustang is plagued with electrical issues ranging from connecting with bluetooth, inoperable backup camera, tag light wire stripped. Sometimes when I start my vehicle, bluetooth will not connect to my phone for reasons I dont know. Also the backup camera works 10% of the time. Ive read that Fords wiring is being crimped in between the trunk lid. Lastly the rear tag light wires have been stripped/corroded due to poor weather protection.

5 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/22/2019

Wiring to the rear deck gets pinched when trunk opens/closes. Rear camera and trunk release do not work and trunk ajar dash notification will not turn off. This is a known design defect by Ford. I have created 2 separate cases with Ford customer care and they refuse to take responsibility for full repairs.

6 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/16/2019

Back up camera repeatedly works intermittently causing me to back up into a post, costing $1200 in damages electrical wires going to trunk lid are incredibly thin and flimsy. This effects the back up camera, trunk release, trunk light, etc. ; all of which have failed at one time or another. Repaired wiring twice but they are so frail, they continue to snap and cause malfunction throughout the car.

7 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

I purchased my car new March 1, 2005. I have done all of the suggested maintenance through the dealer. In 2011 - water pouring in under dash front passenger floor. I took the car to the dealer and they couldn't find the leak. I started to wet vacuuming the water out. Then the car started to smell like mold. I finally called my nephew who works for Ford in another city. He cleaned out the drain in front of the passenger side and dried out the car. Why didn't the mechanic at landmark know about the drain? around this time the car started to lock and unlock itself while parked in the driveway. Called dealer no help. Called nephew he said wiring issue. The locking and unlocking stopped. Since then the locks try to relock anytime I accelerated from a full stop. I have found my windows rolled down. I never leave my windows down. I am a big stickler when it comes to locking my car up and I don't leave my windows down. It happened again this last week. Next came the trunk. It would unlock while I was driving. Finally removed the fuse to make it stop. The next fail was the instrument cluster. Nothing works right. Sporadically the speedometer works but can stop any time. Luckily the odometer works so I use the trip meter to know when to get gas. Right now my car lies dead in the driveway. The cd changer started shuffling cd's when the car was running or parked. Problem was it had not been turned on. I have on occasion smelled smoke in the car while driving. From researching the internet, evidently there is an issue with the electrical system shorting out due to water getting into the fuse box due to the drain on the passenger side. My car only has 107000 miles on it. Ford knows about this issue and has know. They need to make it right. Oh and to top it off, I took it to a Ford specialist and they said it was the alternator. $370 later my car is still dead.

8 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Defect in under cowl drainage leads to rainwater leaking into passenger compartment. Water drains down wiring harness into the Smart junction box casing electrical shorts that at first caused the right headlamp to shutdown after 15 seconds. Recycling the headlight switch brings the headlight back on for another 15 seconds. This condition renders the vehicle unsafe to operate from sunset to sunrise. Now the drivers side headlamp has begun the same problem. I checked online and it is apparent that this is a significant safety issue for which the vehicle manufacturer has no part available to fix. They initially informed me that the smj would be available to purchase last September. That has now been pushed back to February of 2016. They want over $400 for the part plus additional labor to program and install a component that should have been recalled years ago. This problem is already covered under a TSB and the defect can cause a multitude of malfunctions that could easily result in life threatening situations. I just recently checked and found over 286 reports on file with NHTSA, yet no apparent investigations appear to have been conducted, nor a recall. It is my sincer hope that NHTSA is not waiting for a body count before taking action. . Read more...

9 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/20/2011

Took 2005 Mustang in for servicing and the horn not working. After finding the horn, fuse and box was working ok, they needed to extra work to find out why it would not work from the steering wheel. $200 more for testing, they said the wiring harness box was corroded. For another $200 they need to do a water leak check to find where water was going to the wiring harness. It would cost between $3,000 to $4,000 for new box, wiring harness and labor. Would have to gut out the car, take out dash, seats, doors, trunk. They are not sure if it would be under warranty, depends on what part is making it leak. They could not tell me what part would not be covered under the warranty. I am taking it to another dealership for a 2nd opinion tomorrow. They also said if I did not get this taken care of, the car electrical system would shut down one by one.
