Ford recall #05s28 (cruise control fire). I received this recall last August. I've been on a ongoing wait list for the parts. The recall is serious as explained in their letter that my Ranger can have a underhood fire at anytime and they advise not to park in or under any structures. Why am I waiting so long for parts when I could go up inflames (their description as the letter reads. Thank you; rtnye.

Recieved safety recall notice warning us about a malfuntion in the speed control deactivation switch. Have been going to dealer for past three months only to be put off repeatably.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that the part for recall number 05s28 is unavailable and is taking too long to arrive. He did not have the vehicle speed control disconnected on his vehicle. There had been no failure to date. The current mileage was 90,000.
My husband was driving down the road and his 2003 Ford Ranger fx4 5-speed gave a small lurch and a "stutter". Since he was right there at his destination, he pulled into the driveway and shut the engine off. Thinking that it was just a glitch (like his foot slipped off the clutch, or something along those lines), he went into the house to get our son and take him home. He was inside the house no more than 5 minutes. As he was carrying our son out to the truck, he saw that there was smoke pouring out from under the hood. Of course, emergency services were called. The fire reached the inside of the truck within a couple of minutes and began spreading along the ground. After putting the fire out, the fire marshall indicated that he believed that the fire started towards the back of the engine compartment on the driver's side. The truck, of course, will be a total loss. The passenger side airbag (which was disarmed as our infant son rode on that side) had deployed, the windshield had exploded, as had the two front tires. As for the hood, there was nothing left.

Ford recalled my Ford Ranger for a repair in August to replace the scds speed control switch, I have contacted local dealer, where I bought vehicle, each month and have been told no parts, not sure when. Since then the cruise control has quit and am concerned about a failure, which is reported to be fire.
I have a 2000 Ranger XLT, with a recall for the cruise control. I have been waiting since August 2007 for this to be repaired. I was told that now I can't get it repaired until the middle of Jan. 2008. I would like to know why, if this is an official recall, that this has to wait this long and I have to drive with no cruise control. This does not make me anxious to purchase another Ford product.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Ranger. The contact received a recall notice for the vehicle speed control in August of 2007. He disconnected the cruise control on his own and called the dealer. The dealer stated that the parts for the recall repair were unavailable. Since that time, eight months have passed and the parts remain unavailable. There had been no failure to date. The recall number was unknown. The current mileage was 18,000.
I have a recall on a Ford Ranger 1999 pickup for the speed control. The recall notice was sent to me in August. The part is still unavailable at my local dealer - bitterroot motors and when I call the Ford hotline, they also say the part will be unavailable until may or later. I think if this is a safety issue, they should be required to deal with the recall a little sooner than 10 months after they issue the recall. Now it is my responsibility to keep calling the Ford dealer to find out when I can schedule a repair. They don't keep a list to contact me when they get the part in.
I own a 1998 Ford Ranger. To begin the cruise control quit working. Then I noticed smoke from the engine compartment area. The brake pressure switch on the master brake cylinder caught fire. My husband was able to disconnect it and extinguish the fire prior to any significant damage occurring. I contacted Ford and they advised the vehicle was not on the recall list of vehicles for this problem. I spoke to the dealer and they advised the truck had a similar or the same switch as those on the recalled vehicles that have caused fires in the past.

The contact owns a 1999 Ford Ranger. While driving 65 mph with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle shut off without warning. Approximately two weeks later, the failure recurred. As of September 17, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle. Nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control) was referenced. The dealer stated that the part was unavailable and they would disconnect the vehicle speed control. The contact was dissatisfied with the remedy. The failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 60,000.
1999 Ford Ranger sport truck 4 cyl 5 speed stick power steering , brakes, air conditioning , cruise control. Once in a while it will accelerate by itself. With foot off of the pedal it will keep accelerating . Then it will gradually come back down in speed. I can never tell how long it will last. Usually it is a matter of 10-15 seconds it can happen whether the vehicle is hot or cold. It seems to accelerate up to about highway rpms 2500-3000 . It can be a little nerve wrecking.
Received a recall for my vehicle may 07 as of today I was told by Ford that it will not be fixed till late June 2008 or later. So I am driving a truck that I am paying for that has no cruise control and when this disconnected my cruise control without telling me till after the fact, it also disconnected my abs system. So now I have no anti lock brakes -hardly any brakes and no cruise control. This is totally unacceptable. Why did they disconnect the system, knowingly without telling the consumer they did not have the part in stock. So I am driving a unsafe vehicle in my option.

Engine fire in 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 parked in my driveway with the engine turned off occoured Dec 31st 2006 approx. 4:00 pm. I have reported this incident to Ford customer service and they said they would get me a response letter in 7-10 days. I did not have full coverage as the vehicle was paid for w/ 131k miles but planned on driving the truck 100k more. I believe that this was caused due to the cruise control switch I have found out about on the web but due to not having full coverage would have to pay for an investigation myself that I can not afford.
Due to the recent recall of Ford f-150 pickups, I thought I would pass this along. I own a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup. It too had a failure of the cruise control deactivation switch. Although it leaked brake fluid onto my driveway and sprayed fluid throughout the left side of the engine compartment no serious damage occurred. It cost me the price of a new switch, brake fluid and the cleaner for the drive and engine compartment. I can see a potential for brake failure and fire if left undetected.

Replaced fuse that had blown on cruise control on 1998 Ford Ranger. Stepped on brake to put in gear and noticed excessive smoke from under hood. Opened hood and found mechanism in front of master cylinder reservoir on fire. Small fire torched front of reservoir I put out the fire with a towel breaking the mechanism, cruise control brake disconnect.
Cruise control on my 2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 appeared to disengage when I shifted the truck into neutral going down a steep hill. When my vehicle slowed, I shifted from neutral back into drive and the engine raced to redline(rev limiter) as the cruise was trying to immediately increase the speed without waiting for the transmission to engage fully. I shifted back into neutral and then I noticed that I had the cruise control on. I cut cruise control off, then shifted back into drive and everything worked correctly. If cruise control is supposed to disengage when shifted to neutral, it really should disengage not race to redline when shifted back into drive. I don't know what the affect would be if an engine at 6000 rpms suddenly engages the transmission at 65 mph. I'd rather have the engine race when I first put the shifter in neutral than when I shifted back into drive!.
1996 Ford Ranger. The speed control deactivation switch leaked. Consumer saw hydraulic fluid under the vehicle. Vehicle was taken to the dealership on July 25, 2005. It was not covered under the warranty. Consumer purchased the switch and replaced it himself.

2000 Ford Ranger cruise control module broke off the steering wheel. The steering wheel was attached by the wires only. The breakage occurred while attempting to turn on the cruise control. The cruise control switch was replaced.
While parked the consumer's 1998 Ford Ranger caught on fire. The cruise control was used for 4 1/2 hour the day before the fire erupted. The consumer's home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage.
Consumer requesting information on 2003 Ranger defects. A friend of the consumer's downloaded complaints that were similar to the problems the consumer experienced with his vehicle. While driving 55 mph with the cruise control on the truck began to accelerate. The vehicle sped up to approximately 80 mph before the consumer could get it to stop. Three months later while stopped at a traffic light the vehicle accelerated suddenly and struck several vehicles. This accident caused serious injuries to four people. The consumer was unable to prove that the vehicle caused the accident therefore he was sentenced to 70 months in jail.
Non injury momentary loss of engine control while driving up a moderate incline with my new Ford Ranger in cruise control & over drive on at about 65 mph & 2500 rpm's. The engine kicked down twice in immediate succession and the engine ran away to 6000 rpm's+ and stayed there. Engine tach limit is 6000rpm's so I do not know the extent of the over rev. I took immediate action to disengage cruise control which lowered the rpm's and turned the over drive off which resulted in a normal rpm of about 3000 @ 65 mph. I have traveled the same area before without any such occurrance. Also the engine has a erratic type misfire at idle which may contribute to the problem. This situation was very unsafe as when the engine "ranaway" I only glanced at the tack twice and do not know how fast it ended up before I disengaged the cruise control.
Serious safety hazard: vehicle throttle actuates independently when brake is applied. I purchased a used 2003 Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive extended cab 4 door model with a 3. 0 l engine with 21123 miles 3 weeks ago. Three times I have come to a stop, applied the brakes and the throttle has independently actuated. This defect occurs when I apply the brake to make a complete stop. Specifically at the exact time my foot depresses the brake pedal the throttle actuates by itself to increase the engine rpm. ( I did not have my foot on the throttle pedal) yesterday, the third time this has occurred. I kept my foot on the brake and the rpm increased to approximately 3000. Smoke emitted from the right wheel brake because of the rotation of the tire in opposition to my application of the brake. I had not been using the cruise control and was stopping from a relatively low speed of 5 mph either at a stop sign or in front of my office in all three incidents. Yesterday when parking in front of my office the engine rpm stayed constant and did not drop to idle. ( during the previous two times the engine rpm surged and then returned to idle within 1 second. ) however yesterday after approximately 5 seconds of constant high engine rpm I moved the gear shift lever of the automatic transmission from the drive position to the neutral position. The rpm then returned to idle speed and the transmission no longer attempted to involuntarily propel the vehicle in the forward position. I then immediately drove the truck to the conway-heaton Ford dealer in bardstown kentucky for a warranty repair.
The consumer stated on July 10, 2003 there was a fatal roll over. The tires separated and the vehicle rolled over and blew out. According to consumer's investigation there was a problem with the fuel on the cruise control switch. This vehicle was a 1998, Ford, Ranger. The highway patrol came to the scene and issued a report. It was consumer's cousin vehicle. The tread came off from rear driver's side tire. Consumer thought the vehicle rolled over three times. There was two occupants, and both were killed in the accident. The exact mileage was not known.
About two years ago (I don't recall the exact date) I had taken my 1996 Ford Ranger XLT into north gate Ford (port huron/ft. Gratiot, mi) for a trace on electronics?'check engine' light was on. After they had placed my truck on their computer they said that they had to 'download updates' to my truck, which would take some time (3 billed hours!). Ever since then my cruise control would 'act up'. It will increase speed above the set speed by 5-7 mph, occasionally up to 12 mph, and then the throttle would release with a thunk sound. Using the brake pedal, or the 'off' button would work after a couple of tries however. Also, the cruise control was not always available?would not turn on or set. I believe that the Ford dealer unknowingly, or maybe even willingly, inserted a computer virus or corrupted code into my truck's ecm module. I attempted to take it to another dealer to be checked, but it would have cost me more than I could afford to put it back on the diagnostic computer. I'm afraid that this will result in an accident?I have ms and rely on the cruise control when on the highway.
While driving with the cruise control engaged, I attempted to pass another vehicle. My vehicle engaged in an uncontrolled accelleration. Depressing the brake or accellerator did not disengage the cruise control. Using the "off" button on the cruise control did not disengage it. Only shifting into nuetral at a speed of approx 70 miles per hour disengaged the cruise control. This happend at least three times in a 200mile round trip. The vehicle had previously been modified by the dealer based on a recall notice which I received about the cruise control.
This vehicle is not equipped with cruise control. The problem is the throttle sticks at various speeds, causing the engine to race and making it dangerous to stop the truck. I have nearly rear ended two vehicles due to this defect.
Consumer was traveling 50-55 mph with cruise controlon. Reached down to turn a/c to a lower fan speed & disengage cruise control, and vehicle accelerated from 50-85mph. Consumer pulled over to call hotline & will call Ford in the morning.
Cruise control failed to operate and has not operated since. This Ford Ranger has the same wiring harness as the recalled Ford f-150 wiring harness.
Was driving 35mph with the cruise control on. The vehicle hit a patch of ice. The throttle became stuck. Vehicle took off. Spun around in the opposite direction. Hit the median. This caused the vehicle to flip over 3 times.
Driving 35mph, with cruise control on, vehicle hit a patch of ice. The throttle stuck. Vehicle took off. Spun around in opposite direction & then hit the median. Vehicle then flipped 3 times.
Idle air control--idle operation was erratic, dealer found a bad idle air control valve.
Idle air control valve assembly failed, causing vehicle to not decelerate properly resulting in extended stopping distances.
