36 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

2002 sel noticed running a little low in the rear, before I took off for my 140 mile drive to the race track (I am a chaplain) I decided to pull one rear tire and take a look at the suspension. Saw no problems, was about to put it all back, when my tire (thanks god) flipped over and I saw a groove. Why would michelin put a groove like that in the sidewall? I was stumped and thought it looked like it had rubbed, so I started looking - the lower coil of the spring had popped out and was worn shiny from the contact with the tire. I have been driving like that for probably 1000 miles. Went and bought a new strut assemble and now I am trying to get the lower pinch bolt out! then I need to go buy a new tire.

44 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

On Jan 15, 2010, my wife pulled out of our driveway to go to work in our 2002 Ford Taurus sedan. The left front tire went flat immediately. I quickly put on the compact spare tire so she could get to work on time. Two days later, the right front tire went flat all of the sudden about a mile from our house. Further investigation showed that each of the tires went flat because the coil spring of the front strut on the associated side of the vehicle broke and stabbed the tire. I know it is hard to believe but within two days, the spring on each of the front struts broke. We are very grateful that this happened at a low speed. It could have been deadly if it had been the week before when we were traveling at 65 mph on a trip to des moines. At the time of the breakage, the Ford Taurus had 99,300 miles on it. I was able to get the car home and plan to replace the front and rear struts myself. Since I will do the work myself, the cost of the repairs will be about $1,000. 00 dollars, which includes 4 new struts and two new tires. I will not use Ford replacement parts, but will use monroe or moog.

When I got into my 2002 Ford Taurus ses, I put the car into reverse. I heard a "rubbing" sound from the front passenger tire. I got out and looked at it and didn't see anything. 59 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2009

My wife drives a 2002 Taurus ses. In December the front coil spring broke. Thankfully, it was parked and did not cause the tire to blow out while driving. Yesterday a rear coil spring broke causing damage to the tire but the tire did not blow out. I understand there was a recall (id#14649) through the model year 2001 Taurus but not including 2002. I have had two springs fail and I'm concerned that the scope of recall #14649 was too limited in scope. There may be a very serious safety issue the model year 2002. I have notified Ford motor company about the potential safety issue and have asked for reimbursement. Initially they said no, but I have asked for a call back from the customer service supervisor. I have the broken coil springs if a metallurgical check makes sense. I can also send pictures.

2002 Ford Taurus ses purchased 12/31/01. Front coil spring broke, slashed tire as I backed out of garage. On inspection, a piece of the strut broke and had to be replaced. Also a rear coil spring was broken and strut was damaged. Now having to replace 4 coil springs, the struts and 4 tires. $1700, with only 56, 000 miles on the car. I will contact Ford about this. Backed out of driveway, when right rear wheel made transition from driveway, curb, to street, right rear strut coil spring blew apart and punctured inside sidewall of tire. Was necessary to replace tire and both rear complete strut assemblies. After hearing of other same instances I investigated the NHTSA site and found hundreds of the same, both front and rear have been submitted for complaints. I have also found that Ford had a recall for the very same condition for 1999-2001taurus, recall 04s17 / NHTSA 04v332000. Incident occurred on 01/13/2009 65,270 miles. This type of defect could cause serious injury or death - should be a recall on front and rear spring coils.
