Power steering failure- steering pump growling and whining was followed by overflow of power steering fluid around cap. Repair shop replaced power steering pump ($200) which worked for less than 30 minutes before power steering assist failed again. Repair shop is now diagnosing problem as rack and pinion seal leakage issue and recommending replacement at another $ 200+ for parts plus 2+ hours of labor. Purchased this car 11 months ago with 26,000 miles on it. Ford says it isn't their problem. I will remember that when I buy my next car!.
My car problem happens when it rains. When I hit a puddle on the right front side the power steering does not work for several seconds, though the engine runs fine. When I hit the water it splashes up and gets the belt to the power steering pump wet and all power steering goes out for 5 to 10 seconds. This is a nightmare in traffic.

There were steering power problems. While driving, the power steering had gone out, and the consumer was not able to drive the vehicle. The manufacturer was not contacted. The problem occurred as the consumer had taken a yield to the right on the highway. The steering was stiff and difficult on turns, especially right turns. The front seal was found busted and leaked out of the cluster cover.
When I purchased the car everything was ok. Then within a 6 months the power steering went out. . . Took it to a mechanic because the car wasn't covered under warranty anymore. The mechanic said it was not only the power steering but also the whole steering front end. They said the power steering pump going out was the result of the rest of the rack going out, since it's all hydraulic. Well I got it fixed for 600. 00 and low and behold 6 months later the same thing went out again. I went through this site and found several people talking about relatively the same issue. Since manufacturers are not responsible for their product. . . That is unless someone dies, then I'm assuming nothing can be done. . . But to keep shelling out $$$$$. And the saddest part is. . . I'm still paying on the car.
When gear shift is in reverse or drive, power steering goes off, radio sound goes off and the power windows will not go up or down. What could cause this problem I have contacted Ford they would check into the problem, but have not had it repaired yet.
Consumer states that while driving at any speed on flat surface and no warning the power steering will lock up then disengage and it is causing it to be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notified. Mr.
When I bought this car, the steering was making a grinding sound, I took it back twice to the Ford place to have it checked, and I asked the man I bought it from, why it made that noise, and the salesman and the repair man both told me on 3 different occaisons that "it was supposed to make that noise!". So I dealt with it. But my power steering has been messing up for about 5 months now. My steering wheel won't turn, it's making this awful noise and when I stop the fluid just bubblies out, steaming hot. And the rack and pinion busted, and the fluid started pouring out. We called the Ford place, and he plainly told my husband that it would only cost $2000. 00 to fix! I think these people new they were selling me a lemon! this needs to be reported, because I've asked other people that drive the same kind of car, and their having trouble with their power steering also. Something needs to be done about this!!.
Power steering failed to work which made steering the vehicle very difficult, roaring sounds come from the steering column, the speedometer fluctuates and caused car to jump forward and speed ahead. Nlm.
Power steering developed a leak and suddenly became non functional. System failed, and is being repaired.
When turning wheel there is a grinding sound. Dealer determined vehicle was losing power steering fluid. Also, rack and pinion needed to be replaced.

While traveling consumer noticed smoke coming from the engine area and then vehicle lost all power steering. Consumer pulled vehicle over and looked under the hood. Noticed power steering fluid leaking.
Erratic loss of power asssited steering after a few minutes of driving, sometimes with seat belt light on and power window control inoperative. Chattering noise suggests an eletrical problem. Definitely dangerous if loss or regain of power assisted steering happens due to over or under steering.
Power steering failed, causing loss of control. Vehicle drifted from left to right. Contacted dealer. Please add VIN.
High pressure power steering hose ruptured at highway speeds. Loss of vehicle control. Loss of power steering boost. No injuries.
Power steering goes out intermittently. Dealer/manufacturer were not contacted at this time. Feel free to provide any further details.
When trying to make a right turn power steering will quit working on rainy days when I go through puddles of rain on right wheel. Then, start working again after a few minutes.
After about 60000 miles the serpentine belt that drives the power steering started slipping when we hit a puddle, causing power steering to stop. Belt replaced at 68,000, but problem recurred starting again at about 85000 miles. Very dangerous, unexpected failures. Dt.
Power steering turns off in rain, and Ford tells us there is nothing they can do.
I had an accident on 01/14/00 due to my car cutting off. I was turning when there was water on the street. I made a right hand turn and the right side went through water. My car made some high pitch noise and the lights on the dashboard all lit up and the car shut off. I had no control over my car and ran off of the road in a ditch. I didn't get hurt. My front bumper was damaged. I am very scared driving this car when it rains or when there's water on the street. This is clearly a safety hazzard. I told jerry's Ford about the problem. I even contacted the Ford dispute board and told them about the numerous times the car had cut off, they told me that when it happens again, take it directly to the dealership. Please look into this safety hazzard before someone else has an accident or dies.
Steering exhibits groan or shudder with some loss of assist when recovering from a right turn. Ford has issued over 10 technical service bulletins on this matter. Dealer and Ford motor contacted. Ford motor took information and indicated that no assistance will be offered to fix this problem. Repairs estimated at $500. I am concerned about the slight loss of power assist in recovering from a turn which could contribute to loss of control.
This could have been a fatal accident I was driving at about 60 miles and all of a sudden I had lost control of wheel and was fighting to steer the car. This happened twice within a month 7/23/99 and again8/23/99. The lord was truly with me I could have had a serious accident both times.
The power steering unit has not actually failed. What happens is that after making a right hand turn a large groaning noise is made when truning the steering wheel back to the straight ahead position. Ford has issued numerous servic bulletins on this problem starting back in 1996 and want to charge a substantial amount of money to correct the problem. I feel that since this deals with the steering unit there is a safety issue involved and they should correct this problem on all their vehicles at no cost to the owneres.

Something happened to the steering while I was driving a Ford Taurus rental car that made me lose control and tumble over an embankment. Before the accident, I noticed irregular steering that resembled sterring consistant with a low tire. However, after stopping to check the tires, I found that all appeared to be properly inflated. Approximately 5-10 minutes later, the steering failed causing me to lose control in a curve and tumble over an embankment several times landing on my roof. Since this was a rental car, I do not have the specific information such as VIN number, mileage, etc. I have provided you with all of the information I can recall, but will attempt.
Consumer was driving at approximately 45 mph and was making a sharp turn at the outer part of curve, automatic steering control became inoperative, causing loss of steering control, almost resulting in accident.
On several occasions, especially during or after a rainfall, when driving through standing water which caused an upward splash under the right front, the engine died , causing loss of power . Engine would restart as soon as vehicle cleared the deep water area, but a squealing of the power steering would follow for about 30 seconds. Dealer aware of problem, but ha syet to replac eparts.
While driving approximately 10 to 15 mph turning through a water puddle, the vehicle looses power steering with no warning. Dealer has been notified.
While driving the defective power steering causing noises in the right side of the vehicle and no power steering which caused loss of control of the vehicle. Dealer replaced rack pinion and power steering pump. Dealer cannot determine problem.
