2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

I went to get my two lower control arms to be replaced. And my mechanic said that there was a recall on my vehicle on my rack and pinion. So I took it to two different Ford dealerships and they said that wanted over $150 to even look at it and tell me if it would throw any codes. But if you just drove the car you can tell something is still wrong with it. I'm scared.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2014 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 10/31/2019

On 31 October 2019, I was backing my car into my garage and the car steering locked up and made it difficult to move the car. A warning message appeared, and I called the dealer to describe the problem (I. E. Gave car warning and could barely turn wheel of car). Dealer told me to bring the car in to be checked. Because dealer was close to my job, but far from my home, I had car towed to a local repair shop. I was told that the rack & pinion needed to be replaced. I was told a few 2013 cars had the same issue, but no work has been done on any other 2014 Fords. I was also told there are no warning signs for the issue or any preventative measures that can be taken. The car had 97,653 miles when issue occurred. I paid to have the work completed since no recalls are currently listed/associated with my VIN and this mechanical steering issue. I paid a total of 2,208. 13 for the repairs related to the issue (replacement of part, labor & recalibration of the part).

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/21/2019

On August 21, 2019 I started my 2010 Ford Taurus sho and proceeded to pull out into the street and found that I was unable to turn my steering wheel in either direction. I shut the engine off and restarted vehicle to find that an alarm or beeping sounded and on the cluster message board a fault read "power assist steering fault" and was again barely with both hands forcefully able turn steering wheel either way left to right. I was only two blocks luckily from my home and man handled the steering to my garage. After a quick search I see that Ford along with the NHTSA failed to include Ford models from 2008-2010 in a recall for failing electronic power steering rack and pinion assemblies that was issued for 2011 and up models. These pre 2011 models contain the same exact parts as what is in this recall. The parts cost is nearly $1100 and upwards of $1000 for labor. This negligence by both parties has raised the injury or death factor ten fold for every ecoboost owner along with the entire population as these cars are getting older out on our streets. If this fault would have happened the previous day as I traveled for over 3 hours on the interstate or making my way around a curve or any turn I may not have been able to type this complaint. Just google this defect and to no surprise I'm not the only victim of this known problem. Many have had accidents related to this sudden part failure or near missed. Many victims have tried to address this issue with Ford and the NHTSA to receive no assistance regarding this issue. Why is that. This problem is not going to disappear but only get worse as the control module mounted on the rack and pinion is subjected to extreme heat from the turbos and catalytic converters that was engineered due to a lack of space inside the engine bay area and were mounted with in 3 inches away from this electronic rack and pinion component. Help!!!.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/15/2019

Started losing steering control at highway speeds. Traction control light came on so I slowed down to control vehicle. Had it towed into dealership. Dealer said the electronic controls to steering were locked up and had to be replaced along with the pinion and rack. Dealer and Ford claim there is no recall. The below recall information from the NHTSA describes exactly what was wrong, was fixed by dealership but I was charged $2,412 to replace parts rather than download new codes to fix the issue. Summary Ford motor company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Ford fusion vehicles without a 3. 5l engine and Lincoln mkz hybrid electric vehicles, 2011 Mercury milan vehicles, 2011-2012 Ford Taurus, Ford flex, Lincoln mks, and Lincoln mkt vehicles equipped with a 3. 5l gtdi engine and 2013 Ford Taurus, Ford flex, Lincoln mks, and Lincoln mkt vehicles equipped with any available engine. The affected vehicles have electric power steering assist systems that may shut down as a result of a steering motor sensor fault. Consequence if the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Remedy Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the power steering control module (pscm) for diagnostic trouble codes (dtc). If dealers find any loss of steering assist dtcs, the steering gear will be replaced, free of charge. If, no codes are found during the pscm inspection, the pscm software will be updated, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin July 20, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15s18. . Read more...

11 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2009 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/20/2018

Steering suddenly becomes very difficult like the power steering failed. It intermittently has power assist and the fluid level is good. I was told this a well known problem that is more common in the 2008 model. Diagnosis indicated the rack and pinion and/or gearbox is bad. It's a very dangerous situation when it suddenly cannot be controlled. The first time, I was at an intersection making a left turn going 15 mph when I was completing the turn, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to straighten out direction of travel forcing me brake hard to prevent going into head-on traffic until I could force the wheel back. Now, it has limited intermittent power assist going through the full steering range.

14 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/24/2017

2008 Ford Taurus x 135000 miles vehicle started being difficult to turn either way. My wife and 4 kids were almost in an accident because of it. All fluid levels were good. Changed out the rack and pinion and the power steering pump and the problem is still occurring. It occurs mostly at low speeds, but also occurs at higher speeds. This is obviously a huge issue because there are multiple reports online of other people having the same issue. We obviously need to be able to steer to drive and also quickly avoid any hazards on the road and we can't do that because of this issue.

15 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1995 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/11/2017

This past Sunday, on June 11, 2017 I was driving home from a graduation party and there was a loud "pow" once I accelerated from a stop. My steering was very stiff (as if I was driving an ancient large truck with no power steering, also my exhaust system at least partially came undun. I was able to get the crippled car to our regular repair shop, who told me that I had a subframe rust-collapse. I had talked to a shadetree mechanic friend, who said that it wasn't an actual subframe collapse, but the next layer up, the engine cradle whose sleeves are no thicker steel than the unibody sheetmetal. One of the sleeves rusted through. Supposedly the engine cradle sleeves are removable/or the cradle itself. My mechanic friend and the tow fellow that brought my car back to my home, both said that what happened is quite rare, they never heard of such an incident. The cradle rust through caused my front subframe to partially collapse and the engine is tilted down on the right-front. This disconnected the exhaust and bound-up my rack-and-pinion steering, rendering the car unsafe to drive. This car is not a rust-bucket, no rusty body panel holes, and everything else still works! just the paint and clearcoat are flaking-off. I have looked on the internet and searched local salvage yards, but cannot find a good engine cradle/sleeves. Yet, there are scads of good Taurus engines cheaply available. Why didn't Ford offer replacement engine cradle/sleeves? was there no recall? I'd bet I'm not the only person this happened to!! I would like to get this car fixed! I have photos of the subframe fallen after the engine cradle failure. Please send me an e-mail address I can upload them to. I lose this page if I try to upload here (4th time!).

Power steering went while driving in wet icy conditions. Seems to go in and out now, usually out. Checked fluid levels and they are fine. Seems to work making left turns with engine at higher rpms. After calling in to work on e occasions and waiting about 4 to 6 hours on each visit, just to be told that its my rack and pinion which drive time does not cover. 24 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 12/08/2014

As I was out running errands and backing in to park my 2008 Ford Taurus x, it became very difficult to turn the steering wheel in either direction. The steering was very stiff and required a good bit of effort. I immediately called the dealership repair shop and was instructed to bring in the car for evaluation. Ford determined that I needed to replace the steering column (rack & pinion) as well as the power steering pump & reservoir. Prior to the initial complete power steering failure in December of 2014, I had complained to Ford numerous times about the steering and had had the rack & pinion unit & power steering pumps replaced (at 100268 miles) in February of 2013! in December 2014 they quoted an astronomical price to again repair my car, at which point, I took it elsewhere and ordered the parts on-line. Fast forward 6-months later (June 8, 2015) and my steering has again failed with the same issue - power steering failure. The parts are still under warranty and the repair shop has replaced the pump - which they stated was not working at all, but my steering is still not functioning. This is the third time I'm making this repair, clearly it's a symptom and not the real issue. When is Ford going to address this problem?!.

Braking and extreme physical effort to recover control by rotating steering wheel to the hard right had to be maintained to maintain the vehicle on a strait-away course. Steering shuddered violently while attempting to maintain a straight-line path. Brought vehicle to authorized Ford dealer (brondes Ford, maumee, OH) for repairs. Catastrophic failure of the steering rack part of the rack and pinion steering gear was cause. Metal debris from this catastrophic component failure had to be flushed from the steering hydraulic system during the repair process; entire rack assembly was replaced which necessitated complete front-end alignment. 33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/25/2012

The rack pinion assembly needs replacing after only 29431 miles. The dealer also recommends replacing the sway bar assembly; however, no physical damage to the sway bar assembly is evident. The rack and pinion has not degraded to the point of binding or inhibiting steering at this time. But, it obviously will do so in the future and requires attention. I note that this is a frequent occurrence with this assembly based on other complaints at this site. I have written to Ford ([xxx]) but with no response to date. The failure was diagnosed on 1/25/2012 after my complaining about a pop in the steering assembly during turns. No other incident occurred. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
