While attempting to back into a parking space, I was unable to steer the vehicle. I had help driving it to my local service station, thinking perhaps the power steering had gone out. After inspecting the vehicle, I was advised to have it towed to my Ford dealer in tupelo, ms where the determined that the rack and pinion assembly had gone out. The contact owns a 2008 Ford Taurus. While driving approximately 5 mph the steering wheel became very stiff then it would not turn at all. The vehicle was shut off and upon restart the steering wheel functioned normally; however, it became difficult to turn at low speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that it was a known failure but he would have to pay for the repair cost. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the power steering gear. The failure had not recurred. The failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 42,814. 2002 Ford Taurus last month I had to replace both of the rear springs last week I had to replace the rack/pinion today as I just started to drive forward in my driveway, the front right spring broke and pierced the front right tire. I was going so slow in the driveway that the sharp edge of the broken spring started slicing into the tire as if a person were peeling an apple. It scraped into the tire until it pierced through the sidewall. Thank heavens this did not happen at 70mph I have read about the prior recall involving these same parts on the 2001 and earlier Ford Taurus models and on 2003 and earlier Ford focus models which use the same parts. How in good faith could you believe that these parts were going to just disappear from the face of the earth. Ford continued to use these parts until they were gone and just rolled the dice that they would not be caught by your agency. You must help the thousands of people out there driving various models of Fords with these same parts this appears to be a very, very common problem with the Ford springs. The events that lead up to the rear springs being defective were a thump when the r/r spring broke and the car dropped a little bit. While the mechanic was replacing it, I had him check the l/r spring at which time he found that one on the verge of cracking. The rack and pinion was leaking and upon further inspection it too was found to be bad. And as I explained above, I was driving out of my driveway at approx 2 mph as I was only going about 20' as I had to stop and pick up my wife who had walked to the mailbox. The rear springs are not available as it was last month. The rack and pinion is going to be returned for the core deposit unless you ask me to keep it. The front springs will be available as I will be changing out the l/f spring also. Please help all of us and possibly prevent a tragic accident.

My 1999 Ford Taurus has power steering rack and pinion issuses. The car makes whining noises when turning, the steering gets tight after a few minutes of driving. The fluid ozzes out of pump out of cap. Can cause a crash it jerks the wheel a little bit also. Ive looked this problem up on internet and theres alot of the same issue with their cars. There should be a recall notice for so many of the same issues.

1. The problem occurred at the end of a 1600 mile drive when turning into residence driveway. The problem then persisted until repaired. 2. Loss of power steering assist, primarily for right turns. 3. Dealer replaced, at my cost, the rack and pinion assembly per released technical service bulletin which recognized this as an existing problem.

I bought my 2001 Ford Taurus used, in 2004 it has been a good car until 2008 when it started shaking in the front end. I took it to the mechanic and they told me it was a rack and pinion, so I had that replaced and paid through the nose. The car was still shaking, I took it back he said that I had to get it aligned because it was towed out and he did not have the equipment to do that. I replaced the now bald tired and had it aligned. Still shaking and now worse, I am now unemployed and can not afford to take the car to the shop and the warranty on the mechanic I took it to is up and he says it is my responsibility to pay for him to look at it further. When I had it aligned they did tell me that the rods and the struts were fine. So what exactly could this be? after 40 mph the steering wheel shakes like crazy and there is a whirling noise coming from the wheels. Please help.

Rack and pinion power steering pump failure.

Contact stated while driving she went to make a right turn and the vehicle made a horrid noise. The vehicle did not steer to the right. She drove the vehicle home. Her husband checked the vehicle and found there was no power steering fluid in the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic. They checked the vehicle and determined the rack and pinion steering failed. Repairs will be made at contact's expense.

Car "bouncing" a lot, brother in law said it sounded like a bubble in the tire. Had the tires changed and my husband was called over by mechanic. The mechanic told my husband we had a serious problem and showed him that the rods for steering were loose but that the lug nuts were tight. He said it was the rack pinion. I went online to see if there was a recall or where I could have it fixed and came across 0 recalls yet hundreds of complaints of the same issue in a 1999 Ford Taurus.

I have had to replace my rack and pinion twice (in 2003 and 2004). I purchased my 2000 Ford Taurus new and have been the only owner. This vehicle has not been in any accident. I am curious if there has been any other complaints or recalls on the rack and pinion for this vehicle.

The vehicle lost power assistance while driving 45 mph, the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer informed consumer that the rack & pinion needed to be replaced. Please provide any further information.

While driving it was hard for the consumer to steer the vehicle. Dealerships informed the consumer that the problem pertained to the rack and pinion. It was also difficult to steer the vehicle while trying to park. The consumer was told that the rack and pinion cracked.

3rd rack & pinion replaced in my 1998 Taurus since I purchased it in August '99 : sept. '99; sept. '03, and Apr 04. I have only put 26,000 miles on my car and believe this is not an item that should be replaced with such frequency.

On March 16, 04, a part to correct the steering on my 2000 Ford Taurus was replaced. In October 05, the same part needed to be replaced. I was told the parts are only under warranty for 12 months. The steering wheel was almost impossible to turn. I have paid to have this part replaced.

The "rack and pinion" on my 1999 Ford Taurus needs replacing. I think this is too soon under "normal" city driving. The car is still under the 6 yr. -75,000mi. Warranty.

Rack and pinion seal leaks fluid into the right hand boot and then the ground, causing the power steering not to function properly and failure to the power steering pump. I can't believe Ford doesn't care about the safty and loyalty of their customers and take steps to correct this consistant defect quite common in this model.

Just out of the blue, I started having difficulty with my steering. For a couple of weeks, I had to constantly replace power steering fluid. What really scared me was when I had to travel out of state to get back home. I put in power steering fluid and it just disappeared right in front of my eyes. It was at that time I took it to a mechanic and he was amazed when he saw my power steering fluid leaking out of the rack. The seal had broken badly. He informed me that the rack pinion had to be replaced. I expect I would eventually have car problems as with anyone else but I almost fell to ground when I was told how much it was going to take to repair the problem. I am just really disappointed with Ford. I have always spoke very highly of Ford and I am sure I still will and I am sure my next vehicle will be a Ford. I just found it so hard to believe that I had to pay for something this major so soon. Sad thing is, I feel even worse after learning there are so many other consumers who has had the same problem. I was amazed to find there was so many others. Even now, my car does not feel the same. I have got to take it back to the mechanics because the wheel has started to tighten up again.

Consumer called complaining about rack and pinion problem. Dealer was contacted, and she had to tell them what to look for because of past expirience with another vehicle. This vehicle only had 15000 miles. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that they will make record of it.

I bought the car new and it has never been wrecked. At 44,000 miles the rack and pinion seals began leaking power steering fluid into the cv boots. The first symptom was loss of power steering fluid, pump noise, and pump overheating. The rack and pinion is going to get replaced and the service manager at the dealership is going to try to get Ford to pay for part of the repair. The car is out of warranty.

Power sterring went out at 72,000 miles. Had to replace the rack and pinion. Still doesn't feel natural. Power sterring fluid keft overflowing, eventually leaking into the boots. At high speed 65-70mph it feels very unstable.

Intially diagnosed as power steering fluid leak - turns out that the problem was a leak in the rack and pinion steering.

Well, well, well. Just yesterday I filed this very same complaint to you. This morning my husband was on the phone w/one of your people who said there was no investigation into this problem at the present time. However, it's inconceivable to me that you have as many complaints as you do of a failed rack and pinion on 1999 Ford Taurus, and here we are getting the breaking news today the gm just recalled thousands of vehicles for a failed lower pinion!!!! don't you look at trends with other domestic vehicles, like years, like defects???? this failure is obviously a trend in the '99 Taurus! how sad that 15 crashes had to occur in the gm vehicles that were most probably linked to their failure. How fortunate that '99 Taurus owners have not experienced the same, at least not that we yet know of. Wouldn't you like to be responsible for saving us from accidents, possibly injuries, and possibly deaths? please issue an investigation! also, you technician told my husband on the phone that if we were to have our rack and pinion replaced, as four separate Ford mechanics have advised. That we should save our receipts and if a recall was issued at a later date we could be reimbursed. However, once again, on your website I researched and read that the manufacturer has no legal responsibility to reimburse us for work already performed. Get your stories straight! Rack and pinion seal broken, power steering fluid leaking into right boot. In speaking with 3 (three) separate aaa approved repair centers, we were told this is a very common problem with the 1999 Ford Taurus. We checked the automobile club of southern California website and found several hundred complaints on the exact same problem. Ford must do something about this! how fortunate my 2 infant children were not in the car with me when this happened, I barely made it home!!! this is an accident waiting to happen. Obviously there is a faulty seal, and Ford gouging their customers for an additional $800-$1000 repair is an atrocity!!! dt.
