When you start the car, occasionally a code comes up power steering assist default and the steering wheel locks. There is a recall 15s18 for this problem for my exact car, make, model, and year. However when I have the VIN number checked, my local Ford dealership ( lithia springs,GA) say my car is not included in this recall. My car is having the exact problem the recall identifies, but Ford will not pay for it because my VIN number is not in the recall. My mechanic identified the recall and the exact problem with my car. I have not received a letter and I went to my local Ford dealership and they said my car was not included in the recall after checking my VIN number and has not been repaired previously for this problem. I am frustrated because I am having the exact problem the recall describes and I am fearful of driving the car because recently the car stopped in my subdivision when I was turning on to the main road. That is, the steering wheel locked and I had to turn the car off and restart it. This has only happened in the past when I initially started the car-in my driveway. My mechanic has said it is the steering control mogeal fault & the steering angel fault and the recall specifically describes the affected vehicles have electric power steering assist system that may shut down as result of a steering motor sensor failure. Consequence: if the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. This also can happen on the road and cause a potentially serious accident. We cannot drive the car now because we are afraid we will be killed or maimed if it happens outside of our subdivision. Please help.

Steering angle sensor code cib00-64 - was diagnose to be issue. Though recall was approved on this make/model steering:electrical power assist systems-this car is not cover because they claim it was built after date suggested in recall Ford 15s18. Without warning and while car is in motion while driving on street/highway and in motion the steering wheel becomes stif (no play in wheel as normally it has) when you proceed in making turns the car loses all power and shuts down causing the engine to shut off. When this happens it will normally start again, once started again the steering wheel becomes very hard to steer, making it almost impossible to steer. Then without warning you will have normal function of the steering. Causing you to lose control of the car because when it re-corrects the steering failure, it often occurs while we are over compensating for the lost of steering, causing the car to go out of control.
Vehicle was stationary, as I had just turned it on. Steering would not move, called Ford to ask and set up an appointment and went back out and it worked again. Steering felt very funny and did not drive it till I took it to the shop. Ford never stated the problem, no code present. They replaced the whole steering rack and called it good. I believe this is the issue where steering fails to work. A recall should occur. . . . This could become a huge issue if I was in motion. I believe the car was at 45 k mileage.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no solution other than having the dealer diagnose and repair the vehicle. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 118690. Researched the problem and saw that there had been a recall report back in 2015 pertaining to the steering modual failing. Unfortunately my 2013 Ford Taurus is not covered under this recall per Ford motor company.
Electronic steering rack failed.
The car was being driven in the right lane and when it started to drift to the shoulder, a correction was made to bring it back but it then drifted to the left lane. A correction was made to bring it right and when it lined up an attempt was made to straighten it out. At that point the car continued to the right and went off the road. The driver later stated that she did not lose control but had no control. When the car was being emptied of personal effects since it was totaled it was noticed that the steering wheel was no longer connected to the front wheels but would just spin. The police refused to do a follow up interview with the driver and would not document the condition of the car after the accident saying that they could not prove if the steering failed and caused the accident or was a result of the accident.

2008 Ford Taurus x -- power steering stopped working at low speeds and then would re-engage without notice creating significant potential for swerving due to unavoidable over-correction.
