Car was not moving, waiting for a traffic light to turn left in a long line of cars when side airbags unexpectedly deployed followed by the the front driver-side air bag. Luckily I was not injured, though disoriented, deaf and blind for a minute or so from the explosions and smoke in the car the yellow air bag sensor warning light was turning on and off for a year so I am guilty of poor maintenance , but talking to my friends I found out that it is not that uncommon and I think that something needs to be done since next time this explosion can happen to somebody else while driving on a highway.

While the vehicle is in motion, and with a passenger weighing 115 pounds on the passenger seat the passenger seat air bag warning light comes on while the vehicle is in operation. When the seating is adjusted the warning light goes off again. Ford Taurus does not have an indication to say if the passenger airbag is activated or not. Even when the passenger airbag is not activated (no passenger in seat) the air bags indicator stays dark. So when a the passenger is on the seat there is no way to know if the air bag has turned itself off as it did not detect the passenger. In cases where the car is involved in an accident an un activated air bag could cause a serious situation and the driver has no way to know the actual status of the air bag.

- the contact owns a 2006 Ford Taurus that was involved in a crash, and the frontal air bags didn't deploy. The contact was driving on the highway at a speed of 65 mph. At the time of the incident it was raining and the vehicle slid into the rear end of another vehicle and a second vehicle rear ended the contact's vehicle. The contact stated that prior to incident there weren't any warning lights indicating that the airbags were malfunctioning. Three people were injured as a result of the crash.
Contact stated while driving vehicle at 60 mph it hit a deer. This was a frontal impact. The air bags on neither side deployed. However, the air bag warning light stayed on. He took the vehicle to the dealership to have the warning light checked. They checked it. The dealership told the contact it was safe to drive the vehicle.
Airbag warning light came on for 2 days. Went out before scheduled service at dealer. No diagnostic code was returned. Dealer advised to return car immediately if light went on again. Approximately a week later light went on again, car was returned to dealer with light on and an "unknown code" was returned by diagnostic unit. Approx 3 weeks later, without warning, passenger side front airbag deployed spontaneously. Car filled with powder making visibility impossible, and the force of the airbag deployment shattered and pushed out the passenger side of the windshield, scattering shards of glass all over the front seat.

After starting the vehicle air bag warning light illuminated. The warning light would stay on until the vehicle was shut off. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Intermittent air bag warning light. Took vehicle to Ford dealer they were able to test via ngs hookup, which showed code u2017. Replaced part yf1z-14b321-ea contr asy-occ. , per special service message #14579. Thought this might be of intrest given there is a inquiry involving the 2001 Taurus air bag system.
The airbag warning light came on. Fords owners manual said the bag would malfunction and possibly deploy. Take the vehicle to the dealer ASAP. This vehicle has been in the dealers possion since 10/19/00 and I am told that the defective part is on national backorder. How can this be acceptable? I use this vehicle in my work and depend on it. It's been 5 working days & a weekend and it appears that it will be next week before (no promise) the part arrives. What can you do? I do not expect you to get this auto fixed for me however, being of importance of safty, replacement parts for an item should not be tolorated for any reason! is this a common problem with Ford? your consideration will be appreciated.
Air bag warning light keeps illuminating on the control panel. Dealer has been contacted. Dealer claimed to have fixed problem. This has occurred four times.
