Car Stall Problems of GMC Acadia - part 1

When driving in traffic and slowing down or coming to a stop. The vehicle goes completely dead. I will have to restart at each stop. When it does start, it is not a smooth take off, it is extremely rough, almost like a manual transmission in the wrong gear. This should not be happening. And it is getting worst every day. I have to transport my family in this vehicle and it is very unsafe for us. I still have a year to pay for it and I am hearing more and more customers with the same complaint. The dealer doesn't want to touch it, because they are unsure what is wrong, or if they can repair it. Frankly, this should not be an issue with this many cars. There have been several near-misses with accidents because of the car stalling in traffic.

The timing chain broke which in turn broke the engine as well. It happened as I was exiting the highway, it just stalled and would not start again.

While driving, the stabilitrak service message came on, then tracktion control displayed. The car then stalled, while doing 70 on the freeway. Almost got killed trying to get to the right lane. Had to turn off ignition (and open the door to kill the electrical circuit) to reset the car to drive it. The car also does this at idle. It will randomly mis-shift and feel like a chain was hooked to my bumper and broke off. Super scary, life in danger for sure. This has happened 3 times in the last 24 hours. I just bought the car 5 days ago.

I have requested at least 4 times for repair of my car 2017 Acadia. Several caution light on the dashboard comes on including the engine sensor(malfunction indicator lamp). While driving the car it looses power to accelerate. When pressing the gas pedal the car stalls. This issue has happened on both the highway and city. There have also been times when turning into a parking lot I have felt some vibration. Additionally, the car dashboard gives out commands for putting the car in park after it is stationary.

2 instances within a 2 week period. On 12/13/2017 vehicle is being driven and engine power is lost and car turns off we had to pull over side of the road when trying to restart the car it sputters and wont start. . 2nd instance on 12/24/2017 car was once car was put in gear it stalled would not restart or even turn over. Dealer replaced battery and fuel pump regulator module the 1st time. 2nd time dealer does not know what the problem is.

Approximately 3 weeks ago, my 2008 GMC Acadia was serviced at 140,000 miles for worn out timing chains. Now, I am looking at problems with my transmission. How convenient. Within three weeks this vehicle has failed on me. The timing chains were rattling in turns when it was taken into the dealership and the problem was discovered. I actually visited and left the dealership several times before the problem was diagnosed, so I was riding around with a faulty part in my engine. The transmission went out after I had exited the interstate at which point I could not accelerate more than 10 mph. Good thing I was not on the interstate when it decided to stall out on me as I can only imagine how disastrous that would have been. The 2007 and 2009 GMC models were recalled for timing chain issues, never the 2008 model. The transmission problem is related to the 3-5-r wave plate, which had a 20,000 mile extension from gm to cover the repair if this broke, which of course I am out of, thus the repair costs for both defects are my problem. I do not understand how they will not back their products knowing that they are faulty. Gm needs to step up and man up to the fact they have inferior products inside these engines and transmissions.

I went to a local dealer and complained about a vibration/rumble while driving. It happened mostly around 1200-1700 rpm. The service manager heard of the problem. There was a manufacturers bulletin outlining the problem and suggesting a fuel management software upgrade. This was done. The bulletin also applied to Cadillac xt5, which is on a shared platform with my 2107 GMC Acadia denali awd. There are now several new rpm ranges when the vibration/rumble occurs in addition to the old 1200-1700. Not only has the old problem re-appeared but there are certain conditions about 1500 rpm when I am starting out from a stop for about 50 feet where the problem seems to almost stall out and then with a big clank (like down shifting or transmission is slipping and then suddenly engages) and takes off. I cannot help but think there is going to be a mechanical breakdown of something due to the sudden engagement and clank or even stalling out in traffic, if this problem is not fixed. I contacted the dealer once again but have not heard back yet.

My vehicle turned off while driving on a side highway, and was unable to be jump started. Took it to a mechanic and found the ecm was bad. Mechanic called different dealerships to price an ecm, and was told by each dealership that this is a common problem. He was informed that even with a new ecm installed, it may go out in another year.

Car stalls as I am turning into parking spots, turning or going around significant curves in the road, while im in a round about etc. Luckily I have been able to put the car in neutral and it starts back up and off I go. I am the second owner of this car and I bought it from a non gm dealer. My mechanic is at a loss as to what is wrong because a) there are no codes that are coming up and b) the stalling is very sporadic, it will do it twice in one week and then not do it again for 3 weeks. I have had this car about 5 months and it has happened about a dozen times. I pulled the carfax and called the dealership that did all the work on it with the previous owner. After speaking with the service department, I was told that the previous owner had the same problems and the dealer could not get the car to malfunction while they had it in for servicing. Although she didn't tell me everything that they did to try and resolve the issue, I do know that they went as far as to replace the cylinder head hoping that would solve the issue, but clearly it did not. This is a very dangerous safety issue, I have almost hit several cars due to the fact that when the car stalls, everything locks up and you have no control over anything.

June 11th 2014, it was a Wednesday. I drove over a set of railroad tracks and all of a sudden my car starts beeping and flashing all of these lights at me. The “park assist off” , the “traction control off”, the “service stabilitrak” and the “check engine” lights all come on. We are in town and not going very fast so I don’t notice the car driving any differently at first. I stop and still everything seems fine, except for all these lights flashing at me. When I try to go again is when I realized that there is a problem. My car will not accelerate. I have the gas pushed all the way to the ground and my car is moving at like snail speed, I’m trying to make a left hand turn, up a hill, to get to the parking lot but my car literally will not move! vehicles are swerving to avoid crashing into us, I call a tow truck and my finance. When we do hear back from the GMC dealership they basically tell us that we’re idiots. They test drove the car and looked it over and hooked it up to their fancy machines and there’s nothing wrong with it. August 16th. My fiancé is driving,on a highway at 65 all of those same lights come on and my fiancé announces, “omg samantha, I think it’s happening again. “ sure enough he is unable to accelerate and the vehicle stalls out in the middle of the road. Luckily for us this time we are on flat terrain and we are able to coast into my mother’s driveway. Because it is so late we decided to just go to bed and deal with it in the morning. In the morning, though, we get into the car and it drives perfectly fine. We drive 6 hours back to rapid city, with no issues, although we are sick to our stomachs. During evening rush hour, the car stalled out completely while going approximately 75 mph on a mild incline on the highway. Gas gauge said approximately a quarter tank of gas. All power steering was lost, but I was able to drive the car to the shoulder of the freeway. A service truck put approximately 5 gallons of gas into the tank, but the car would not start and I had to be towed to dealership. Head of gm dealer service said nothing wrong with car and they could not replicate problem, and that the thing with this car is that you can't drive it on an incline with less of a quarter tank of gas or it might stall. Sales rep at dealer shared similar story of 2014 Acadia stalling on him but as he told us, he was fortunate he was only going 25 mph.

Since 2011 my 2008 GMC Acadia has stalled on the highway and streets several times. The first major incident, the vehicle would not accelerate - thankfully I was at a stop light. The vehicle had to be towed and repaired. Then while driving on the highway, the vehicle slowed down by itself and would not accelerate past 25 mph. The first time GMC covered the repair cost done by a certified GMC dealership because the vehicle was still under warranty. The same exact thing happened 20 miles later (when the car was out of warranty) and GMC said they could not cover it because the car was out of warranty - but it was the same issue. All the times I have had this vehicle checked, I have been told it's transmission issues. Not to mention a whole bunch of other issues with this vehicle. This car is a huge safety hazard.

Our car was serviced by jim salerno GMC in randolph,NJ on 5/4/13. The car was brought in to check the transmission that was installed by salerno in 2011 but we were told trans is ok, the timing chains need to be replaced. We get the job done which requires them to take the engine out of the car. We get the car back from them and it is idling very low to the point it stalled once when my wife stopped to get out of the car to get our mail. And we noticed it didn't start up the same as before (slower) but we didn't mention this to salerno because we trusted them in doing the job right (big mistake!) for the next few weeks, my wife does some local driving with the car until 6/22/13 when we (my wife and I and our two small children and our dog) left for a long drive up to maine. We made it into massachusetts and then an engine light came on followed by a lot of rattling from the engine. This was quite scary since the car started driving erratically and we were traveling at high speeds on rt 84. We luckily pull over into a small rest stop and 5 hours later, a ingersoll GMC comes with a flatbed truck and a loaner car.

I have a 2008 Acadia and it just stalls out for no reason. This is a very unsafe problem and GMC -according to the dealer does not stand behind this wide spread issue. The dealer and GMC can't tell me what is causing it and they give me the vehicle back and say if it happens again bring it in and we will look at it but they can never find anything wrong. I fear getting in this vehicle because I never know if it is going to just stall out on me while in traffic on a major highway. When first starting engine a loud pop would occur. Signals, clock,stereo, dome light, battery gauge stopped working. Cheverolet dealer replaced the stereo and ampliifier ($1500 ). Then if I left Acadia in the rain I would find a small puddle of water on the floor under the emergency brake and a drop of water on the air bag on the driver side in front of the vehicle. Was told it could be the sun roof tubes were blocked so I took it to the auto glass place and had the tubes cleaned out. Very concerned about the water because I do not want to loose power in vehicle again. Just went on a trip and had to park outside in parking area and had a real puddle on my mat and underneath the mat. Today I called an auto windshield repair shop to see if the windshield could be leaking and was told that if the car was not in an accident or if it has not had the windshield replaced, they didn't think it would be the windshield leaking, that gm was good about installing and sealing the windshield. My car is kept in the garage and I am the only driver. It has never been in an accident and I am afraid that the wiring will short out, cause a soft spot in the floor, or start a fire. This automobile has only 69,285 miles and has been very well taken care of by only general motors dealerships. Serious problem involving wet elements and electrical problems here. Please let me know what to do!.

The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. While driving approximately 45-60 mph the vehicle stalled. He stated that the vehicle stalled and within a couple of seconds the vehicle started moving in reverse. The following day, the vehicle would not start and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure occurred twice after the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the dealer repaired the air bag light. The failure happened again on December 22, 2010 and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle had not been repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000 and the current mileage was 30,200.

On Aug 9th after leaving san bernardino CA. . I was driving up the cajon pass to return home. I had the car in cruise & gave it some gas so that I could get up the grade because there was a car behind me that was fairly close. As soon as I gave it gas the car lost engine power & I had to move over to the shoulder. The car came to a stop & I was unable to get it restarted. I thought it had overheated but looking back on the situation. I don't think that was the problem . I attempted to start the engine again after sitting for several minutes & it stalled again. I sat for several more minutes, tried again & it started . I stayed on the shoulder until it gained speed, & I was able to drive home. On tues. I called the dealership & they had me tow the car in. They were unable to find anything wrong with it. This is the only time I had a problem with the car.
