general problems of the 2003 GMC Envoy

13 problems related to gasoline fuel system have been reported for the 2003 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2013

My dad was driving his 2003 GMC Envoy xl home from work and he felt a small explosion and saw black smoke out of his rear view mirror. So he pulled over, got out, and there were flames underneath the car. Within 5-10 minutes the car exploded. A fire fighter and state trooper pulled over to help him, and they both said the fire looked like it started from a fuel leak because the flames were "dripping" under the car. After researching recalls and complaints, I am infuriated that there were so many complaints filed over this problem, and even an investigation was done, but it was not considered serious enough to be a recall. I can't even think about what would have happened if he had waited to pull over at the next exit or the first explosion had been bigger. Apparently, this is a problem with almost all years of this model since 2002. I hope nothing like this, or something worse, happens to anyone else. . . Updated 02/19/15 . . . 5 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2011

My gas gauge has been inaccurately giving the proper fuel level. Today I noticed the gauge is now stuck way past the "full" level" and does not move.

6 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2011

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy. From the beginning I've had problems with the electrical working properly (rearview mirrors, seat controls, etc). Also, my fuel indicator and speedometer both went out at the same time. I believe GMC should take responsibility for the default and request a recall. I have read numerous complaints dealing with the very same issues on models from 2003 thru 2011.

7 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

2003 GMC Envoy filler neck leaking. This is a known issue and there is a recall. When I took my truck to the dealership it had this issue but the recall is for the xl model. This is a major safety issue. How can they mess around with leaking gas? it is a 1200+ repair that should be covered.

8 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2010

We have a 2003 GMC Envoy slt. Everytime we put gas in the vehicle it doesn't shut off like it should. The gas will overflow and go all on the vehicle and all on the ground. We have owned the truck for approx. 1. 5 months. This happens everytime we get gas. I have never had a vehicle do this everytime. It has been from different gas stations.

9 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

Had gas pouring from 2003 GMC Envoy. The sending return part is bad, the GMC dealer said part is over $400 and has to be ordered from California, my warranty does not cover it and from what I have read on here, it has been quite a few Envoys with the same problem. My Envoy was originally a lease and came from PA which we were not told. We were told the warranty we purchased covered bumper to bumper but does not, the part will be 5 days coming and meantime, I have no car to drive until ?I get it back. I think since the gas leaks so much, and could have caused a fire or and an explosion something needs to be done. Thank you for any information you may be able to offer.

10 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

When driving my 2003 Envoy it smelled strongly of gas and upon parking, it was leaking gas all over the ground, I had it towed and the sending unit was bad, if it had sparked or there had been an aec, it could have caught fire and the cost is $ 1000. 00 and I have to pay out of pocket. The first extended service corporation will not cover it, the warranty was falsely offered to me by the sales rep at waestcott Buick burlington nc and was costly and worthless. The Envoy was a lease out of PA, which also was not disclosed to us. This has been a huge cost and disappointment.

11 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy. Lately I have smelt gas when outside and even inside the vehicle. After doing some research online, it appears that this is a common problem with these vehicles. This should be recalled with gm, this is a huge safety issue. Since what makes gasoline explode is the vapors I would image that gm might have a death on their hands before long.

12 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2007

The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the vehicle would start after a few seconds. She also noticed a gaseous odor and a fuel leak underneath the vehicle.
