19 problems related to tank filler pipe and cap have been reported for the 2003 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Check engine light illuminated on instrument cluster. Diagnostics indicated a code po 442. This code is indicative of a fuel system leak in the evaporative emission system. Replaced gas cap. Problem not resolved. Filled vehicle with gasoline in October 2010 and several times since. Strong odor of gasoline is present. Each time fuel nozzle fails to shut off fuel from gasoline pump and gasoline is spilled on the ground near driver side rear door creating an environmental and major safety hazard. Vehicle never in accident or modified in any way. Vehicle has 62,000 miles. A courtesy general motors repair program is in place for these vehicles if the long wheelbase models. Numerous occurrences in the short wheelbase models also. This is a known defect according to the gm dealer that services the vehicle, but they want over $1500 to replace the fuel tank and the tank unit which includes the fuel pump, gauge, and hose connections. There is no guarantee this will fix the diagnostic code that sets the check engine lamp, or the problem of gasoline leakage/spillage. The vehicle will not pass a state safety inspection and therefore is not allowed on the road. A forced recall should absolutely be made for these vehicles. At a cost of over $35,000 for this vehicle, and the hazards it represents, it is a total travesty that gm refuses to stand behind their product.

1) check engine light! 2) advised the gas cap was probably not tightened properly system reset and light appeared in 100 miles. Technician found gm service bulletin 05-06-04-014a: info - diagnostic aids for trouble codes p0440, p0455 & / or p0442 fuel was leaking from the crack 2002 - 2004 Envoy may have issues with a crack in the gas tank filler neck 3) replaced fuel tank at my expense as gm would do nothing. Technician advised that the filler neck broke off completely with minimal pressure.
The gas tank on my 2003 GMC Envoy XLT (80k miles) is leaking, especially when tank is full. There was a small puddle on the driveway. The problem actually started back around 50k miles with engine light on. I have taken it to dealer and mechanics before, but it was thought to be some sort of fuel cap problem or over sensitive sensors. However, today, because my gas tank was full, the dealer found that there are leaks caused by a crack tank and fuel tank neck. The fuel leak and vapor are so strong that I feared a small spark can set the whole vehicle on fire like a roman candle. Car was used for everyday commute only.
2003 GMC Envoy xl-- service engine light came on had vehicle checked. They decided the problem was a fuel cap. Replaced with new cap and service engine light comes back on. Take vehicle back and they check further and tell me I need a new gas tank. Notice when parked on an incline gas is leaking from tank at the inlet from the filler neck. During investigation on internet I've noticed alot of people complaining of the same problem with fuel leaks. Why no recall for fuel tank issues??? I haven't had the vehicle repaired yet because I was searching for possible recall. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow to see if they will cover this issue. If the vehicle is leaking fuel on an incline then I'm sure it has vapors escaping on level ground.
Took 2003 GMC Envoy xl to dealer to investigate engine service soon light - found po422 code - small leak at gas tank filler neck. Checked internet found several owners that have experienced similar problem - fix is to replace entire gas tank at a cost of $800. 00.
I have a fuel leak at the point where the fuel filler hose enters the fuel tank. I have researched this on the internet to find this is a very common problem with this vehicle. I feel that this is problem has the potential to cause fires and explosions.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. The contact stated while driving at unknown speeds, the driver and passenger doors independently flew open. The contact was holding onto the door while driving until she was able to bring the vehicle to a stop. The dealer advised having a diagnostic performed on the vehicle to determine the cause of failure. In addition, when filling the fuel tank, the gasoline would spew back out of the filler tune and onto the contact. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 180,000.
(2) fuel tank leaks at filler tube (3) fuel tank was replaced.
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy and there is a gas leak. I bought it in October 2006. In 2007, I took it to a GMC dealership for the check engine light, they said that it was probably caused by my not tightening the gas cap. Since then, I have had problems with pumping gas into tank, problems with a gas smell when the tank is filled or if I go over a bump. Now, there is reduced power. Husband says it is on fuel filler neck. On several web pages, it says there was a recall only I am unable to find any information on it. A lot of people have had this problem, why has it not been recalled? I can't afford another vehicle and what happens if I get in a crash. We have 5 kids that I drive around.
I took my vehicle in for service because it failed emission testing and the repair shop told me that they have seen several vehicles like mine with a similar problem. I found that your NHTSA action number pe07014 is the problem that the repair shop found. I understand that the investigation into this is still open. The repair shop told me to contact the GMC dealer because they felt that the dealer should stand behind the problem and it is a safety issue. Will this become a recall issue and will the dealer need to replace the fuel tank at their expense?.
A cracking has occurred where the gasoline filler tube connects to the tank. That caused a vacuum leak, which caused the service engine soon light to illuminate. Dealership has diagnosed, and confirmed cracking and advised gasoline leaking could occur and recommends replacing tank. 1. Vacuum leak renders gasoline tank emissions system inefficient. 2. If gasoline leak occurs, it is then a fire hazard. The dealership communicated to us, he has seen similar failures in that vehicle model (GMC Envoy).
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy xl. My check engine light came on. I had a mechanic hook his computer up to the vehicle. The code it gave was a bad gas cap. He replaced the gas cap and reset the computer. Two weeks later the check engine light came back on. I also smelled gas after filling the gas tank and noticed gas on my garage floor. I am having the gas tank dropped and checked this weekend. I wonder how many others are having the same problem?.
When filling my gas tank, I have had a few issues with the pump shutting off too quickly as if the tank is full. However, I have also had the opposite at one particular gas station. Each time I got to this particular station, the gas pump clicks off, but gas continues to flow and spills into the tank and all over the vehicle. This only happens with my GMC Envoy and not any other family or friends' vehicles at the same gas station. It happens each and every time with the Envoy so we have had to stop using that station for the Envoy fill-ups. After seeing the many complaints about the cracked gas hose and issues with leaks, I wanted to make sure that someone knows there are a lot of problems with the gas tanks on the Envoys. I am very concerned that the design of the gas tank and assembly is a faulty design and will result in injuries.
: the contact stated while pumping fuel into the tank, gasoline was noticed dripping under the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to the dealer who determined there was a crack at the base of the filler pipe and the tank needed to be replaced.
The contact stated the gas tank on 2003 GMC Envoy had a leak in it where the spout went into the tank. He noticed this when the service engine light came on. He took vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer replaced the gas tank. The contact felt GMC should pay the expenses.
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy xl. My check engine light came on about 2-weeks ago. I took it into the dealer only to find out that my fuel tank had a leak. The dealer stated it was cracked at the filler neck at the tank. The tank had been leaking fuel and had to be replaced. In researching this on NHTSA, it appears that this has been happening to other consumers.
There are various ongoing problems with the 2003 GMC Envoy slt xl. Fuel flows out of the tank when pumping. The dealer had told the consumer to pump slowly, they replaced the emission canister vent solenoids, replaced the tank neck/hose and replaced the left tank. Although these components have been replaced the problem still exist. The service manager came across a service bulletin that indicated there was a problem with the Envoy like the consumer experienced. He stated he would order the filler upper pipe assembly and lower hose assembly. If this repair does not alleviate the problem the consumer request a refund or a replacement vehicle.
When putting gas in the vehicle it spills over.
