(2003 GMC Envoy xl) I have recently found that my wife and kids have been riding around in a vehicle that was an explosion waiting to happen. General motors has extended their warranty on fuel tank issues 3 times because of a flawed design. I had no knowledge of this before purchasing, as I believe I am the second owner of this vehicle. I have since seen that this issue has been brought to your attention but not to the magnitude to which it is occurring. I wonder if someone has to die a fiery death before this issue is addressed seriously ? I have compiled many accounts of customers complaining of this issue and have records to share. I have contacted gm customer support, only to be put on hold for a total of 153 minutes in the realm of 4 calls with no resolution. This engineering failure consist of great numbers still on the road. Unlucky ones like myself will not have any knowledge of this until total failure occurs and at that time gm's poor design becomes the burden of the current owner. I need help understanding how such a safety risk can be swept under the rug with 493,579 of these vehicles being sold. I have found that the design was so bad that aftermarket suppliers do not even offer this tank. The only place to get one is from gm dealer at a price of $650. 00, which is exorbitant for a piece of plastic. I need help with this matter but it's not just about me, your actions could save someone's lives !.
I have 2003 GMC Envoy, smell gas fumes when gas tank is half full, no gas is leaking on the ground. Will chevy cover some of these repairs? seems like a number of owners have this same problem,.
I was driving down the road and fist off, my speedometer went crazy. Then my fuel gauge went all the way to full, then to empty. Then it wouldn't work at all. There was plenty of gas in the tank too, I took to a mechanic and he replaced thermostat, but it didn't fix the problem. I'm still having the problem and heard there is a recall on the 2005-2007, and it appears I'm having the same problem on this 2003 that they are having now with the newer ones and the 2003 should be included in a recall. Please evaluate. I only have 107k miles on the truck. I was told, a recall could cover up to 120k miles, so I still have some way to go before I should not be included in the recall. My service engine light is staying on too, although it's been checked numerous times and it's always something to do with the fuel system and too expensive to get fixed. Now I am having major problems because of it.
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy that started smelling like gas. I took it to the dealer and they stated the filler tube and fuel assembly was under warranty. However the costly fuel tank was not. How can you have an item directly related to corrosion that caused the tank problem in the first place not be reimbursable. I am very dissapointed in gm to allow customers to ride around with such a dangerous vehicle. Safety in not important to them.
Leaking fuel at the fuel filler neck on the fuel tank.
Vehicle is a 2003 GMC Envoy. Gas fumes were noticed coming from the rear of the vehicle. Also, check engine light came on. Took vehicle to gm dealer and was told that there was a crack in the plastic gas tank near the filler neck. Was told that gm has been having problems with this but no recalls or repair bulletins. Therefore, since vehicle was out of warranty I would have to pay $1350. 00 for repairs. I see this as a safety issue. Gm should be recalling these plastic gas tanks and replacing them at no cost to the customer as this is a safety issue. The vehicle could catch on fire! note: vehicle was not in any traffic accidents or used for off-road driving or abused in any way. Gas tank should not have cracked. Also, I have seen many other similar complaints on the internet identical to this one so it is a common problem to the Envoy and trailblazer family.
Defective fuel tank. Leaks fuel.
Hello, I am second owner of GMC Envoy sle 2003 car. Couple months ago the light check engine soon started appears and disappear after filling gas and several trips. June this year I went to dealer service from where I buy the car three years ago . They fixed some thing (housing and / or gasket, thermostat replace and for campaign 07076: fuel sender module update t5714 fuel sender assy replacement and etc). After 600 miles the light appears again and stays steady. I called to my dealer, but now the dealer is out of business. I went to other service. The service advisor sad me that the reason for the light on is the car has gas tank leaking near fuel filler tube area may be from corrosion or crack and thats mean near $1500 for brand new tank and service and couple days for delivery the tank. Because I dont understood very well the explanations and didn't know how dangerous this leaking is I left very upset without repaired. I called to GMC to ask: is it normal for 7-th year old car to change the gas tank. I think this is ridiculous. (after own the car, three year ago, I didn't hit it. ) follow discussion with two departments and after all I understood: this is my problem and responsibility is mine. That is it. Thank you.

Gas fumes coming from 2003 GMC Envoy. Took to service department at authorized dealer. Gm refuses to fix problem which is covered under service bulletin 07076/NHTSA item #10026522. Gm customer service refuses to replace tank that is cracked due to corrosion caused by fuel tank modular reservoir. Service bulletin state all repairs will be made with no charge to the customer. Envoy has been in the repair shop for 5 days.
Strong smell of fuel coming from behind the driver side rear door. Check engine light on when code is checked. . . States small emission leak present. Upon doing a little web research find it to be caused by a leaking fuel tank. Appears to have a recall on tank for xl model which inturn is the same tank but the sle model is not covered under recall. If original recall was issued for safety concern why not comply for all models.
Vehicle having the "service engine soon" light on and off for like a couple of weeks and then it came light on steady for a while and smell gas around it sometimes until I brought it for service at the dealership where I bought the vehicle. After some diagnostic they found trouble code p0442 evaporative leak detected. They performed evap leak with smoke detector but did not find any leak. Service tech found a leak around a metal seal at the upper part of the fuel tank.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. While driving approximately 60 mph on normal road conditions, the contact smelled a strong odor of fuel coming from outside of the vehicle. The check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was unknown and current mileage was 90,000.

The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. After the contact placed fuel in his vehicle, he continued to smell an odor of gasoline. He crawled underneath the vehicle and noticed fuel leaking on the outside of the gas tank. The gas tank weld was rusted and cracked, causing fuel to leak out of the tank. The contact also stated that the front suspension of the vehicle was banging whenever he drove over the smallest bump. In addition, the fan clutch was making a clicking sound. The dealer informed him that the vehicle was out of warranty and the repairs were his responsibility. The current and failure mileages were 88,000.
8/7/08 found on your web site NHTSA action #: pe07014; which states gm will expand its "special policy" to address the fuel tank inlet check valve fractures on certain model year GMC Envoy xl and they will provide free repair of the fuel tank. It also states that gm would be sending letters to owners beginning in June of 2007 regarding this "special policy". I did not receive such a letter. I contacted gm today at 866-996-9463 regarding this "special policy", and this is the answer I received. Since I was not granted such a letter, and gm did not include my VIN # as part of a selected VIN# mailing for this recall, I am not eligible for reimbursement of the monies spent to replace the gas tank. My complaint is this: my vehicle fits within the guidelines, meaning the make, model, year, and description of defect exactly matches that of what gm claims to be recalling, but since my VIN # was not selected as part of the "lot" of VIN # gm decided to send letters to, I am not eligible. That is not a acceptable reason for not reimbursing my expenses.
Took my 2003 GMC Envoy to my local garage because the clutch fan would not shut off. Mechanic asked about the strong smell of fuel, and I said I was aware the tank needed to be replaced due to a crack where the fill tube goes into the tank. The mechanic said both are important to fix, but the fuel leak could be a deadly situation, and he would suggest tackling that defect first, but in order for car to run normal had to have clutch fan replaced too. Total cost for tank related replacement: $1,058. 04. Total cost for clutch fan replacement: $719. 50 total cost for taxes: $72. 75. Why haven't these well known defects been addressed in a recall. These are not inexpensive repairs we are talking about here, not to mention the potentially deadly consequences GMC is subjecting their consumers to.
I own a 2003 GMC Envoy sle. Recently discovered a leak from gas tank. After making some research on the internet, I found that too many people have the same problem with the same car.
Engine light came on to let me know that I needed to get the vehicle to the repair shop. I took the car in and they found that the gas tank had a crack at the top portion. The gas tank was replaced.
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy that has the fuel guage issue as well. For years I always have to make sure I have gas in the tank because I really never know how much gas a have. I can but $30 or $40 in gas in my tank and my guage will read whatever it wants. It has shown that I have gas and I have ran out twice while driving. It is scary with two children in the car. I've seen that this is a major problem in other Envoys particularly 2005 and up, but also see there are internet posts on complaints reguarding 2003 models as well.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. The contact smelled gasoline, but did not pay it any attention initially. His son entered the vehicle later and also smelled the strong odor. The following day the contact filled up the tank with gasoline and the smell intensified. When he arrived home, he noticed a fuel leak by the rear driver side wheel. A mechanic stated that the leak originated from the top of the fuel tank where the fuel pump connects. The contact dropped the vehicle off at the dealer the next day and they stated that the leak originated from the gas tank, and it needed to be completely replaced. The vehicle is still at the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 59,000. Updated 04/16/08. The transmission was slipping and would not engage in 1st gear. The air condtion was blowing hot air. The ignition swithc shorted out.

Gas tank failed. Had to replace at a cost of over $1000 on 2003 GMC Envoy. Have gas tank which failed - was retrieved from dealer when car was pick up if NHTSA is interested. Should not have to replace a gas tank.
The plastic gas tank on my 2003 Envoy xl is cracked at the neck going into the tank releasing gas and gas fumes. Gas is leaking from the crack and could cause the vehicle to catch fire and/or explode.
In the past three weeks I have smelled gas and started getting a check engine light did all the necessary steps to correct the problem come to find out the filler neck is broken away from the tank that has a huge potential of a fiery rear-end crash. Cursing the net it seems I am not the only one and from some of the comments have lead me to believe that it is a common problem out there . Is there some way to get gm to fix their problem with their gas tank?.
: the contact stated while driving 35 mph on normal road conditions, the check engine light illuminated, and a warning signal displayed on the vehicle's panel. Also, the contact smelled gas fumes in and around the vehicle. It was taken to a dealership, who determined that the fuel tank had a leak; the filler neck was detached from the tank. The fuel tank was replaced which corrected the problem. Updated 12/1/2006 - the filler neck did not connect properly to the tank which was found when the tank pressurized. The consumer fells that the connection of the neck and tank is a design flaw.
: the contact stated while driving 5 mph during normal road conditions in a school zone, the gas light illuminated and a gas odor fumigated the vehicle.
