GMC Envoy owners have reported 17 problems related to other fuel system tank mounting (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving the vehicle a strong odor of gas entering the cabin. Fill vehicle up and large amount of gas pours on the ground from under the vehicle. Closer inspection reveals the part that attaches to the gas tank is broken off causing vapors to escape and not providing a seal to contain the smell. While driving on the interstate at normal operating speed vehicle loses oil pressure causing it to drop to 0 and message appears to stop engine. Both incidents are safety hazards and can cause serious life an death incidents if issues are not addressed by the corporation. This occur on interstate 66 in washington, DC. Immediate recall of all vehicles from GMC neeeds to be initiated.

2 years ago the maintenance required light has been on, when checked by 2-3 mechanics they said it could be the gas cap. That didn't remedy the situation, the light stayed on, then recently the fuel gauge started dropping to empty after a little less than half a tank was used. Then filling the gas tank caused it to overflow if you fill it to full. As of today the car when shifted into reverse, something came loose inside the shifter, now it is stuck in neutral.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy xl. While driving 30 mph, the fuel gauge fluctuated and failed to properly display the amount of fuel in the tank. The lack of fuel caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
Fuel tank check valve mount separates from tank causing a leak. Gm will not fix this defect. This is a safety issue that could result in fire or explosion. I have seen many owners on the internet with same issue.

After refueling the vehicle, a strong odor of gasoline was present and the "service vehicle soon" light was lit. Using the on-star vehicle diagnostic service, the diagnostic code indicated a fuel system leak or loose gas cap. However, upon inspecting the vehicle it was found that the fuel tank inlet check valve, which is part of the fuel tank, was fractured and leaking fuel. In checking with GMC, there was an existing NHTSA action number: pe07014 concerning this defect for my make/model/year vehicle. A GMC special coverage policy extension (07099a) was also in effect since 2007 for 10 years or 150,000 miles to effectively repair this known fuel tank defect. This repair involves a complete replacement of the fuel tank. However, GMC refused to replace the fuel tank and cover the cost of repair because my VIN number was not in the listed range. In trying to repair the vehicle it was found that these fuel tanks are on backorder from gm as I suspect many GMC Envoy owners are now becoming aware of this serious defect and were not informed at the initial recall because like my vehicle, they were not on the VIN number coverage list. Obviously the gm VIN number range for this defect is incorrect and should be expanded to cover all known 2002-2004 Envoy, Envoy xl and Envoy xuv model vehicles. The cost of repair was over $1400. GMC is the only source for this fuel tank as there are no other oem vendors. This is a dangerous defect of which I believe many GMC Envoy owners are not aware of and can lead to explosion and serious injury if left undetected. GMC needs to re-evaluate the VIN number ranges and notify all make/model/year owners immediately to check for fuel tank leakage and if necessary, cover the cost of replacement and repair. I have saved the fuel tank and repair receipts and can supply pictures of the defect if required/requested.
Vehicles fuel gauge will constantly read anywhere from e to full, especially after fill up. Never know exactly what amount of fuel is in vehicle. Have to keep trip meter cleared at each fill up to make an accurate guess at how many miles I have left in the tank. Sometimes the check engine light will also come on at same time as the gauge fluctuates constantly.

Fuel sensors affecting proper read out on fuel guage. Window an door lock switches on driver side door does not work properly. Works when it wants to. Clips on headlight an grill assembly constantly coming loose. I have contacted gm. About wrong fuel readings they told me the problem is fuel sensors in the tank but will not pay for repairs due to closed recall. This problem has resulted in running out of fuel mutiple times. Even though this problem and other problems has just recently started. The cost is over 600. 00 dollars that I should not have to pay. . . . .

It started with engine misfiring causing engine to jolt which damaged #4 coil pack seal to failed allowing water intrusion. In 2008, the GMC mechanic replaced all six coils seals but in 2013-present p0440 engine code is a leak in the evaporative emission (evap). Loose fuel tank filler cap is the most common cause that triggers the p0440 code. I failed a few smog check spending hundreds of thousands of dollars yet my problem still existence. I've contacted the bureau of automotive repair because purrfect auto in fullerton,CA lied about fixing my car. The bar made purrfect auto replace the gas tank and gas cap yet the engine light is still on displaying code p0440. Its been 14 years and I'm still dealing with this problem.
While traveling on the interstate this morning, the speed on my 2006 GMC Envoy dropped suddenly and I had to pull to the side the road where the car completely stopped. I notified onstar, who performed a diagnostic test and indicated there was an issue with the fuel delivery system. The car would start up again, but only momentarily and the engine would die again. I had it towed to my home and am contemplating what to do at this point in terms of repair. There was another issue just over 2 months ago when the fuel gauge was not working and it ran out of gas. No indicator light ever came on. There was at least 15 gallons of gas in the vehicle today, as I had just filled it up a few days ago and had not traveled far. I have filled it up every weekend since the indicator light incident. About 2 years ago, I had to replace other parts related to the fuel. . Possibly called a fuel regulator?? which was mounted to the gas tank. This occurred at 37,000 miles. I was denied an inspection sticker because of an issue with emissions and had to replace that part as well.

The fuel gauge will not register the correct amount of fuel in the tank. I filled up the tank and the fuel indicator went to f than immediately went to e. I now must use my trip indicator so that I know when to fill my tank. I never get a correct reading, it is constantly on e!!.
Fuel gauge indicated nearly 1/4 tank and the car ran out of gas. From that time forward the fuel guage would bounce back and forth from empty to full right after I filled completely up. It would start to work properly after about 40 miles or so. I was told by a mechanic that my running out of gas may have had an effect on the calibration of the level sensor since it was only doing it when it was completely full and then would work fine after awhile. The problem continued to get worse, it continued to bounce back and forth when the tank was full, but within a few weeks started to do the same thing once the tank got down to around 1/2 full. It continued to get worse and now continually stays on empty. My check engine light would also come on when the sensor was going crazy, and now that its always on e, the engine light is continually on. I have to completely fill my tank and set my trip odometer everytime I fill up so that I have some idea of how much gas I have, but it has still caused me to run out two additonal times since the initial time I ran out and I realized there was a problem. I have taken it to a dealership and was quoted a huge amount of money to have it fixed, especially since I have recently found out this is a very common problem with the sensors on gm trucks from that time frame and gm issued a recall notice. My truck currently has just under 117,000 miles on it. I bought it used from a gm dealer in 2010, and have not recieved any recall notification.
When I start my car every morning the fuel gauge starts out correctly and then when I start to travel the gauge drops to empty. After I travel approximately 15 min the gauge will start to climb to about the approx correct fuel amount then it drops down again. I can usually get a good reading after I fill the tank but when I turn the engine off it starts all over again. This has been going on for two weeks now. The consequences are that I am not sure what my fuel level is unless I completely fill the tank. I havent done any corrective measures yet.
I have 03 GMC Envoy that I take very good care of. I have been smelling gas lately and not seen any gas leaking. The gas odor gradually has been getting stronger and stronger. Eventually I was able to tell that there is a gas leak, but is only leaking a small amount while the truck is running. Now my Envoy reeks of gasoline all the time outside and sometimes inside when the heat is on and idling. Seems the gas pools on an indent on top of the gas tank and when I pull into my driveway(down a steep hill and sharp turn) it all pours out. Seems that everyone is having the same type problems. Seems to me this is a bad design on gm's behalf. . . . . . . Maybe they will step up to the plate and fix this obvious defect. I wonder if they still produce them like this? I can only assume that this affects so many other models. Yikes! that's a lot of people who are in danger or got stuck with a lofty repair bill.
The fuel gauge became erratic. The first thing that happened was when the fuel tank was filled, the gas gauge went to empty and the fuel light came on as if there were no fuel. It remained that way for some time. It then would fluctuate wildly until a large amount of gas had been used. Now not sure if it is accurate, even though the gas light has gone off and it is no longer displaying as empty.
Inaccurate fuel gauge reading. Car can run out of gas unless carefully monitored by operator. Gauge became faulty with time when car was 3. 5 years old. At first when tank was filled, the empty light would come on and then suddenly register as full after approximately 20 miles of operation. Gauge now only registers 1/4th tank or not at all after tank is filled. Without careful watch, the car could run out of gas on a highway and be struck or cause significant problems. Dealer estimated cost of repair = $650. 00 and stated that it was a common problem for this make and model. I do not wish to pay this exhorbitant amount for repair. It appears from my research that this is a very dangerous problem and rampant with this make and model.
