On 12/5/2013, I left the schnucks grocery store around 4pm for home. When I arrived at home, I backed in the garage and my husband was waiting at the garage door for me so he could get the groceries. As I was getting out of my 2003 GMC Envoy xl, my husband was getting the groceries and started to tell me something when all of a sudden I heard this extremely loud pop/explosion (like a gun shot) and glass shattered everywhere. I didn't know what happened and immediately asked my husband if he was ok. The shattered glass had cut him on his forehead. There was glass shattered everyone in the SUV, in my groceries, in the garage, in my husband's hoodie, and even on my 2013 charger next to it. The hinges were off to the side of the Envoy with some hanging glass still attached. And what's even more shocking is that the rear broken window kept popping at the hinges and pieces of remaining glass would continue to break off and drop. I contacted gm about the vehicle to replace my window and to tell them what happened, but they said that since I have 137,000miles and had the vehicle ten years, it's out of warranty. I told them that was ridiculous because it should not matter whether it's out of warranty if the vehicle gm made is defective because there was nothing wrong with my Envoy until now. I'm pursuing matters further so they have not heard the last from me. I would recommend to also contact the attorney general's office to file a complaint because gm has to be held accountable for their actions. I will also be contacting the president of the gm company because my husband could have been seriously hurt and they need to incur the costs of repairs, not me.

I was dropping my boat off at the local storage yard where I keep it. I opened the rear hatch of my Envoy to get a bucket out of the inside where I keep the boat's accessories. . The hatch was open for approximately 2 minutes when it exploded and rained glass all over me and into my right eye. It sounded like a shotgun went off, but I was the only person around. Approximately one year earlier, the chmsl plastic flew off on the highway almost hitting another car that swerved to avoid it behind me. This is a common problem as I have come to find out and gm has redesigned the back door . Mine sits in the driveway and I am not about to spend 700 on glass so it can happen again and possibly hurt someone else.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

Car was parked in driveway for the afternoon and the rear glass shattered for no reason. No evidence of anything hitting rear glass. Half the glass was inside vehicle and half the glass was blown backon the hood and bumper of my second car which was parked directly behind said vehicle. Neither one was in motion.
My 14 year old daughter and 11 year old son opened the rear glass hatch to grab a shopping bag out of the back. As the glass hatch opened it shattered spraying glass on both of them causing minor cuts to their face, hands scalp. I was just walking up to them with my 1 year old son and had glass flung onto us with no injuries.
As I was opening the rear door the rear window completely exploded all over.
While the vehicle was parked at my wife's place of employment the back window shattered into a million pieces. The weather at the time was cool with low humidity. No apparent cause existed at the time, local police have ruled out vandals or intentional acts.

Last evening our family loaded into the Envoy and my son opened the hatch halfway and realized he forgot something and ran to get it. The car was not running yet. We heard a loud "boom" and glass shattering and hopped out. There was glass all over our driveway and even pieces up to several yards away. The glass on the hatch had exploded. It was extremely scary and we were so relieved that my son had not been standing right there and that the hatch was partially open so the glass didn't blow toward my rear facing infant, toddler and 8 year old son already loaded in the car. Luckily no one was injured but my children did later cut themselves on shards of glass that made it over to the yard. The whole experience was incredibly upsetting. Even our neighbor came to help. We are extremely concerned about our children's safety in this vehicle. Our insurance covers the cost after our $500 deductible, however, we are afraid the window will blast out again and afraid especially for our rear facing infant and sons riding in the very back. I cannot imagine why a recall has not occurred since this appears to be an issue others have experienced.
After unlocking and using the rear window glass multiple times daily, and twice earlier today, it exploded on the way up. This occured within the first 1 inch of travel swinging up and rearward from being closed with very minimal manual force applied. The temperature today is 27deg. F , which is not the coldest use this vehicle has seen. There has not been any previous damage to the rear glass or gate, or anything in the rear of the vehicle. I write this at the advice of many online forum posts and complaints that I read through. I am hoping there is some time devoted by general motors to finding a solution to this. I just had to ride home with wife and 4 kids shivering because of this. There seem to be hundreds of these spontaneous occurances happening in all types of climates and conditions, which is what convinced me I need to share my incident to fuel the cause. Thank god everyone is ok. It was cold and my kids had their hoods up and were looking down when this happened. This could have been much worse.

GMC Envoy 2003 rear glass shattered without any apparent reason.
Back window on my 2006 GMC Envoy exploded when the tailgate was closed. Glass was not previously damaged in any way. Hinges had just the day before begun making a noise when tailgate was opened and closed. My husband's hand was cut. Glass flew 20 ft. Out of garage where car was parked. Noise of explosion was like a lightening strike or gunshot.
I have a 2005 Envoy that I purchased less than a year ago from a local Chevrolet dealership. On the day of the failure, I did not drive the vehicle to work. When I returned home, I found that the back trunk hatch had somehow opened on its own, causing it to separate from the glass. The trunk hatch was broken in such a manner that it could not have been brought on by another individual or object. After noticing this defect, I contacted the dealership. The automobile was taken to the dealership the next day where they filed a claim with the warranty company. However, the service technician decided that the struts were not the cause of the defect and worked properly and could not hypothesis on why this failure had occurred. He reported this to the warranty company who thus denied the claim because they do not cover the glass on the automobile. I was displeased with the outcome and contacted both the warranty company and the GMC headquarters myself, hoping that this initiative would resolve the situation. It is my belief that there is some type of defect that caused the hatch to open on its own. The company will only replace the struts and are requiring me to pay for the glass replacement and labor for something that I neither caused nor could have prevented.
Rear glass door came unglued at hinges damaging the struts and almost falling on my head. Dealer was contacted and replacing the glass door was suggested at $1500. 00. Repairing attempted using glue and glass door came loose again. It was a near miss, could become a fatality. Main rear door struts were damage and the door almost hit me again.
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Envoy. While driving 65 mph, the rear window glass fell halfway off the vehicle. The vehicle was pulled over before the glass fell completely off. While traveling on interstate 90 at 75 miles per hour, the rear tailgate glass implode into the passenger compartment for no apparent reason. Nothing had come in contact with the rear glass, nor where there any other vehicles in the area at the time to have caused this the glass was sprayed all around in the pack compartment of the vehicle.
This was originally submitted on 10/14/2003, but because I don't see it on the NHTSA web site, I am resubmitting: the liftgate window of 2003 GMC Envoy xl exploded/shattered when I tried to open it beyond the first few inches. A shower of glass resulted in a severe facial laceration to my 4-year old daughter. There is no warning whatsoever on the window or in the vehicle operating guide regarding such a danger. This defect is a major danger that could have resulted in even greater physical injury and has left a scar on my daughter's face.
Consumer stated that rear window shattered when trying to open it. Dealer notified.
The consumer took the vehicle in for the instrument panel not working. The odometer did not show a reading. The side mirrors moved on their own. The radio was inoperative, there were problem with on star, the a/c freon was going into the vehicles interior, fuel leaked from the tank and had run down the left side of the vehicle/door, the bell light and message warned low fuel when the tank was at it's capacity, the liftgate would not latch.
I own a 2002 GMC Envoy slt. My problem is with the rear glass in the liftgate. In the eight months or so that I have owned this vehicle the rear glass keeps popping open when I hit bumps. I do not open the rear glass or the liftgate very often right now but I probably will once my child gets here in March. That is how I know its not from failing to close the glass properly. This happend at least 20 times since I have owned the vehicle. I took the car to the dealer and asked them to look at it and they could find nothing wrong but there must be some sort of design flaw that allows this thing to just pop open when you hit a small bump (its not just large bumps or potholes that cause it to open). I would really like GMC to address this issue before someone gets hurt or something falls out of the rear of the vehicle and injures someone.
