GMC Envoy owners have reported 10 problems related to starter (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I wil be going down the road and my car would just shut off on me. I would have to keep trying to start it and after a few times trying it it would start. I have to keep turning the key over and over a few times to get the ignition to start. It has stalled on me 5 times. Some times it will crank right up and other times I have to keep turning the key over and over for it to crank. When I turn the key it doesn't do anything no sound at all. But if I keep trying it it would start up. I had the starter and battery checked but those were fine.

Window power module caught fire, shut down engine, stranding us. Recall replaced the module but GMC will not address the fact that the high current draw never blew a fuse first to prevent the fire and not shut down the engine. Car started up and we started driving when smoke came out of door and engine stopped. Calls and e-mails to GMC have not been answered other than the basic recall to replace the module then later added sealer on 2nd recall. No electrical fixes. Electrical issue killed my remote engine starter but they refuse to reprogram or replace as it was an after market remote starter that came with the car. . Their electrical problem killed it, then they should be responsible and replace it.

I have a 2005 GMC Envoy. I have had several issues with the ignition switch, the fuel gauge sensor, and the rear hatch. I have replaced the ignition switch four times, purchased a new battery, and a new starter, as well as a fuel sensor. I still have intermittent issues with my car not starting for no apparent reason and stalling out while driving and especially when decelerating. The stalling is a severe safety hazard as I travel very busy highways during my daily commute. My wife and children, as well as myself, have been stranded many times when the vehicle would not start after operating fine prior to turning off ignition. We have had the vehicle in the shop many times and have been told there is nothing that can be done for us because they have no idea what the cause is. At this point, I do not allow my wife to drive the vehicle anymore out of fear for the safety of her and my children. This is a significant stress for us that I feel we should not have to endure.

I purchased a 2002 GMC Envoy new in 2002. Early this year the starter quit working, I had it towed to the dealer, they told me the starter was bad and it would cost $625. I repaired cars for 30 years before I became handicapped, now I am unable to repair, when I did repair I put about 20 starters in for $39 for the starter and 1 hour labor.

Xuv would not shift out of 3rd. Vehicle sat over night and would not start the next day. Dealer checked all systems, replaced ignition switch. Two weeks later, vehicle would not start. It was determined the starter was bad, it was replaced. Now the speedometer is going haywire like others. Mechanic stated it would cost over $700 to replace components.

2004 GMC Envoy SUV, 45,xxx miles. November 2009 Envoy would not hold charge (new battery replaced 7-09), jumped Envoy and would loose charge, keys always were locked in vehicle ignition. April 2010 again, vehicle would not hold charge (something draining battery - nothing left on). Took vehicle to mechanic, no problems located, mechanic replaced 7-09 battery (free), drove vehicle 4 days and did not drive for 5 days - again vehicle would not start (no lights, etc) jumped vehicle off. Took vehicle back to mechanic, nothing indicated in starter, alternator, battery - nothing was left on. Took home again same problem 4 days running, 6 days did not drive, vehicle will not start; had to jump off again. It is currently at the mechanic. In the meantime I researched and found gm bulletin 04-06-03-002 for "misindexed ignition switch"; numerous reports online of same issue. Currently Envoy is at mechanic after I reported gm bulletin.
I purchased my Envoy new with 243 miles & have been the sole owner. My security light goes on & off intermittently & the vehicle won't start for 10-20 minute time periods. There is no apparent pattern w/when this will occur. I have been stranded in areas that I do not feel safe, oftentimes with my young children in the vehicle. I initially took the vehicle to albert GMC, where I purchased it (no longer in service, so exact date/mileage unknown). Diagnostics returned multiple codes, all related to the security system. They recommended that I have the remote starter removed that was professionally installed 11/2008. R&r car audio removed the remote starter & ran all of the wiring to assure it was sound. I next went to automotive specialists. Service history: 11/9/ran multiple diagnostics, unable to determine problem or replicate. 1/19/replaced ignition lock cylinder & case, at my insistence, based on online forums. 3/11/ran multiple diagnostics, unable to determine problem or replicate. 5/6/replaced ignition starter switch, at my insistence, based on online forums. 9/23/multiple diagnostics, unable to determine problem or replicate. 9/19/replaced ignition starter switch (again), at my insistence. 11/18/shop had vehicle for a week, attempting to get the problem to replicate, without luck. I have spent a good amount of $ and time/inconvenience in attempts to remedy the starting issue. At gm's direction 6 weeks ago, I took the Envoy back to a dealership,[xxx], & had to pay another diagnostic fee, which only showed that the passlock sensor was bad. I had the passlock sensor replaced 1/19/11 & experienced the starting issue again within 2 months. Gm would not guarantee their part since it was not installed by an authorized dealer, even though it was a gm certified part. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2006 Envoy denali. Consumer writes states gas needle stopped functioning
the consumer stated the gas needle began to fluctuate in the beginning and since that time, the needle has been stuck on empty, and the engine light illuminated as a result. In March of 2009, when the consumer stared the vehicle, it sounded as if there was something metal tumbling around under the hood. Upon inspection of the vehicle, it was determined the engine needed to be replaced. On June 10, 2010, the vehicle would not start and had to be towed to the dealer. An inspection revealed a starter was needed. Also, an alignment was done and the rear brake light was replaced. On June 12, 2010, the vehicle would not come out of park. After 25 minutes and over 50 attempts, it finally came out of park. The consumer drove to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. September 2010, the consumer noticed the rear of the truck was sitting very low. The rear end air suspension needed to be replaced. The air condition randomly worked. There were times where the air would just start blowing and no buttons were pushed. Also, the defroster stopped working. The consumer continued to experience problems with the vehicle not coming out of park.

Electrical problems. I have had both rear tailgate sensors go out at the same time. I have the speedometer acting erratically off and on off and on. I have had the starter switch go out twice.
Upon starting the vehicle and taking off the gear shifted, and then dropped down to the correct gear it should have be in. Transmission was replaced within the first six months. Also, starter made a clicking noise several times before starting. Then the vehicle shut down.
