GMC Safari owners have reported 8 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Safari based on all problems reported for the Safari.
At slow speeds the abs activates and the vehicle is hard to stop. The sierra van uses the same components as the trucks that were recalled by 05v379000 on 8/3/05. The problem is the same with dirty speed sensors.

In December 2007 the abs brake system began activating at very low speeds on dry, smooth pavement. The activation now occurs with about 33% of all complete stops on dry, smooth pavement. Abs system has even activated immediately after complete stops on some occasions.

: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at 10mph or less, the antilock brakes pulsated which increased stopping distance. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who determined that the wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. The problem was corrected after replacing the wheel speed sensor.

: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at low speeds of 5-10 mph the abs activates and there is decreased braking power and the pedal pulsates. There was an accident relating to this. While parking the vehicle, when applying the brakes, the vehicle rolled off of the parking area and down the hill and hit a tree. There was property damage. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealership and is awaiting inspection. In 2003 with 75,000 miles, the vehicle had the same decreased braking power. At that time, the dealership replaced two front abs wheel speed sensors.
The brakes on my year 2000 GMC Safari passenger van failed while I was coming to a stop and an intersection. I was traveling at approximately 10 mph. I narrowly avoided a collision by turning onto a grassy median. The brake pedal pulsated several times and the pedal then dropped. I could not stop the vehicle using the brake pedal. The van is well maintained and has 36,000 miles logged. The repair shop diagnosed the problem as a failed wheel speed sensor. The hub and bearing assembly and the speed sensor were replaced. It has now come to my attention that a recall is in effect for this part - front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor - on 2002 model year chervrolet tahoe vehicles (letter dated October 2005 from Chevrolet). I strongly recommend investigating these questionable parts on all gems vehicles. It is my belief that the current tahoe recall should be expanded to all vehicles with these parts.
I have a 2001 GMC Safari van. Approx 49000 miles. I first expierenced my antiloc brake system activating when not needed at slow speeds. Thinking this was a little odd and I thought I would need to get it to act up more in order to properly explain what is happening to my service personel. And I thought it was minor as even tho the antiloc system activated the brakes seemed to work fine. Untill one day when all I heard was the noise accustomed with the antilock system but the brake pedal went to the floor. After pushing as hard as I have ever pushed on a brake pedal the van stopped. Being afraid to drive it anymore I got it into my service dept. Who replaced both front wheel speed sensors.
The contact stated the abs sensor and hub bearings had to be replaced. The abs was activating at low speeds at 5 mph. This has been a problem for the past year. The abs light on the dashboard kept coming on. She has taken the vehicle to the dealer once. The dealer replaced the wheel speed sensors on the front of the vehicle. There had been corrosion in the bearings. The vehicle was repaired at the contact's expense. . The manufacturer was not contacted.
Antilock brakes fail when coming to a complete stop. The antilock system starts to function and then at about 2 mph the pedal goes down completely to the floor. You could only regain braking ability if you took your foot off the brakes while the abs system reset itself. I took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs and the left front hub bearing assembly (part cost $864) was replaced. The dealer's service invoice indicated a test drive found the left front abs sensor "dropping out" and "tested circuit sensor open". The service advisor said that the speed sensor was an integral part of the front hub bearing assembly. The dealer service invoice no. Is gccs56017. I have the hub at my home address.
