Brake Disc Pads problems of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Seven problems related to brake disc pads have been reported for the 2002 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2009

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra. The contact was driving 10 mph and applied the brakes but the vehicle began to lose braking power abnormally. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic to have the brake system bled and the pads replaced yet the repairs only resolved the failure temporary and the failure recurred. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) but the contacts VIN was not included due to the state in which he lived. The failure was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 49,986.

2 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra. While applying the brakes at 10 mph, the brake pedal extended all the way to the floor. The road conditions were dry. The vehicle was serviced for NHTSA recall number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) at 33,725 miles. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer. The current mileage was 39,600 and failure mileage was 39,000. The consumer stated the front rotors were replaced by the dealer due to the fact the rotors were damaged while performing the recall. The consumer stated replaced the rear rotors and pads at 35,000 miles due to corrosion and the consumer had to pull the fuse to the anti-lock system to properly drive vehicle home. Updated 09/12/07.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

The contact states had recall work completed, and the dealer discovered the rotors were severely corroded, and the brake pads needed to be replaced. The recall work was completed under NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000, concerning the anti-lock brakes. The service dealer suggested the metal contained in the rotors was defective. While the dealer acknowledged the fact that rotors should have a life span of more than 14,000 miles they refused to offer a free replacement. Therefore, the rotors and brake pads have not been replaced. The contact felt the recall should be expanded to include replacement of the corroded rotors. Updated 09/05/07.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

The disc brake pads jam and fail to make proper contact with the rotors when dirt gets in the area that the brake pads ride on 'runners (stainless steel sheet metal covers the mounting frame where it rides . The clearance is so close and road it will jam the pads. This requires disassembly of all of the brake caliper and grinding of the rotor frequently. The pads not pressing on the rotors properly allow the rotor to rust further degrading the brake performance and causes uneven braking and greatly increased stopping distance -- I have had to overhaul the brakes three times and the repair mechanic says all gm trucks have the same problem.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

Rusted anti lock brakes are wearing out hubcaps and brake assembly. Consumer will need to take vehicle to dealership to be replaced. The front brakes wore out and damage on rotor. The front brake pads and right rotor were replaced. The rear brakes wore out. The rear pads were replaced and the rotors were resurfaced.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

Premature brake wear required brakes and rotors to be replaced at 32,000 miles. Service order indicated "delamination" of brake rotor caused the wear. This is contrary to the "long life" brakes that were indicated to me during the sale of this vehicle. Bought new.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2003

1. Loss of brakes at low speeds, which caused me to back into a ditch while backing out of my driveway. It feels like the abs is kicking in, but you loose all control of the brakes. 2. Have had to replace the brakes -- pads and rotors twice at my own expense in 46,000 miles.
