Brake Disc Rotor problems of the 2002 GMC Sierra

17 problems related to brake disc rotor have been reported for the 2002 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2006

Vehicle had severe symptoms of needing brake replacement at 32,000 miles (rears) and again at 42,000 miles (fronts). A burning smell coupled with very hot brake components and severe pedal pulsation was noticed. When repairs were done the brakes were found to be prematurely worn out and all parts showed unusually severe rust damage. The brake rotors were delaminated and falling apart. The rear backing plates, which usually last the life of the vehicle, had holes rusted through them. The valves were so rusted that they no longer can be used to bleed the old fluid out and will eventually cause an internal rust condition that can cause brake failure. In addition, on a vehicle that had inadequate brakes to begin with, a large portion of the rotor surfaces was not even being contacted by the brake pad. This caused an unsafe condition which drastically increased the stopping distance of this vehicle. New parts were installed and the old parts are available.

2 Brake Disc Rotor problem

During periodic safety inspection the dealer found that the rear disc brake rotors were badly rusted and providing little braking action. Vehicle is four years old with only 29,000 miles on it. Replaced at a cost of $850.

3 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2005

The brake rotors are warping. There is rusting in the brake area. The consumer first noticed the problem on September 10, 2005. The consumer had the rotors cut to take off the bad metal. There have been no accidents.

4 Brake Disc Rotor problem

The contact states had recall work completed, and the dealer discovered the rotors were severely corroded, and the brake pads needed to be replaced. The recall work was completed under NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000, concerning the anti-lock brakes. The service dealer suggested the metal contained in the rotors was defective. While the dealer acknowledged the fact that rotors should have a life span of more than 14,000 miles they refused to offer a free replacement. Therefore, the rotors and brake pads have not been replaced. The contact felt the recall should be expanded to include replacement of the corroded rotors. Updated 09/05/07.

5 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2005

The contact states the abs system is bad. It almost caused an accident on 8-20-05 because brakes went to the floor. There was no braking power. Had to shift the car into park to get the vehicle to stop. The contact was going very slowly when this happened. This was the first incident of this kind. The dealer repaired the vehicle. They replaced the wheel bearings, the hub, the rotors, and a cable that was attached to the wheel bearing on 8-22-05. It seems to be fixed as of now.

6 Brake Disc Rotor problem

2002 GMC Sierra. The consumer states the steering shaft bounced up and down, it was not correctly put in. This caused the front end bounce from the steering box to the steering wheel. This problem has been corrected, but the dealership stated they were having a lot of these problems. This has been happening since the purchase of the vehicle. The consumer thought the vehicle was out of alignment. Also, the rotors a had to be replaced because of the shaft bouncing up and down. The right tie rod was also replaced. The problem was constant with the vehicle.

7 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2005

Consumer stated brake failure resulted in extended stopping distance. Took to a dealer for this issue 3 times. Dealer's general manager said there was some type of problem but he did not know what caused it. No repairs or parts replaced. On oct 18, 2004 the rear rotors were turned. Even after the rotors were turned the brakes still performed poorly. The right fog light fell off while driving.

8 Brake Disc Rotor problem

The front and rear rotors fell apart. The mechanic had to replace the rotors at 47,000 miles. He said it was a common problem. The consumer went to the dealer and they said it was normal. The consumer sent letters to GMC and they are returning letters.

I took my truck in for an oil change and the dealer told me that my truck (50,000 miles) needed new front rotors because mine were "DE-laminated" I asked how this could happen and the mechanic could not give me a clear answer. The gm assistance center told me that the dealership told them the reason for this was I refused some dealer recommended maintenance, although the dealership service manager said that was not the case. I spoke to a metalurgist and he stated the problem was most likely from the manufacturing process caused by not cooling the rotors properly after the were cast, since both rotors are only defective on the inside face. I also own a 1990 chevy truck with 270,000 miles that still has the original rotors. I am afraid this defect could cause an occurrence of brake failure and I am afraid to drive the truck under highway conditions. Also, after asking numerous others, no one (other than gm) has heard of this phenomenon.

10 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Abs system failed, sensor faulty causing abs to engage at 3-4 mph, preventing vehicle from coming to a stop easily. The consumer noticed that all four rotors were rusted to the point of necessary replacement.

Our 2002 GMC Sierra was being inspected for state inspection when it was discovered that the rotors had completely rusted out. Contacted GMC and they told us that theyknew there was a problem, but that it would only be covered if reoprted during warranty period our warranty had expired as the vehicle had 36,800 miles on it and warranty wasonly for 36,000 miles. Rotors had to be replaced because vehicle was unsafe.

My 2002 GMC Sierra has a braking problem when stopping from a slow speed. I took my concern to the dealer and they said the rear rotors were rusted and may need to be replaced. I think this should be a warranty issue as the truck has 32,000 miles and is less than 3 years old, it is unsafe to drive as it is. They tell me it is because I live in the northeast and is not a defect in materials. In 2002 at a brake symposium, sponsered by the manufacturers, it was noted that GMC took the metal chromium ouof the rotor alloy to save money. Chromium resists rust. Is there any help available?.

13 Brake Disc Rotor problem

The consumer's vehicle had brake problems. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on sept. 3, 2004. All 4 brakes and rotors were replaced. The rotors broke on removal due to all the corrosion. New rotors were install but they have corroded again. Consumer heard clunking noise when turning steering wheel, dealership technician lubed the intermediate steering wheel and clunking was gone. After getting the rotors and brakes replaced about 2,026 miles later they have to be replaced again because of corroding.

14 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for a tire rotation, and was told that the rotors were eating up the brake pads. Dealership repaired the braking system by resurfacing the rotors and providing new pads. However, because of the steel being used the rotors will continue to eat up the pads, and this operation will need to be resolved every 10,000 miles. Manufacturer stated that the climate where consumer lived was the reason why the problem occurred.

15 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Vehicle has 19000 miles on it and the brake rotors are badly scored and rusted, resulting in a pulsating brake pedal and the requirement of greater brake pedal pressure to stop the vehicle. The problem is primarily with the rear brakes, but the front brakes are starting to show the same signs. A recent brake inspection indicates that the brake pads are well within tolerance for wear, but the rotors will not pass pennsylvania state safety inspection in their current condition. I have consulted with at least four other individuals with similar vehicles that have encountered the same problem.

16 Brake Disc Rotor problem

While driving vehicle experienced extended stopping distance but no noises. There was no accident or any other problems. Took car to dealer ,they stated rotors were rusted and worn out, and needed to be replaced. No problems since.

17 Brake Disc Rotor problem

When applying the brakes from low speed brake pedal pulsated, resulting in extended stopping distance . Dealer stated the rotors were rusted and flaking.
