2 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/09/2005

2005 GMC Sierra slt VIN #1gtek19b25z238042 I drove the truck 237 miles home and noticed it was not operating properly. I called GMC to resolve the problems. The truck has binding in the front axles, brakes, or differential. This causes the truck to understeer heavily as the truck works to turn the front wheels over the road surface. This also makes the truck difficult to steer, u turns are especially a problem, the truck has sluggish acceleration and stays longer in the lower gears. The rear tires are prone to lose traction due to the increased rolling resistance from the front wheels, braking performance is compromised, the truck will sway back and forth at highway speeds as the rolling resistance of the front wheels varies from side to side. The truck tends to pull to the left, and the suspension is always preloaded from the additional stress. The engine labors to maintain speed on level ground with the vehicle unloaded. On occasion the front wheels will hop off the pavement as it is easier for them to compress the suspension/torsion bars than be turned over the road. It is difficult to maintain a straight line with the truck since the front wheels tend to follow the contours of the road. The front wheel assemblies make a low frequency sound when driving. The transmission, engine, and drivetrain components are always loaded and driving on snow or ice would be treacherous since the front wheels would stop turning on the low friction surface. Driving in the rain is bad enough and the rear wheels tend to break loose. The transmission has behaved strangely, stuttering on occasion as it tried to find the proper gear, it has slipped or freewheeled as I went to accelerate from a stop. The wrong oil filter was installed, the air cleaner is loose and rattles in the engine compartment. The power steering provides little or no assist and requires more effort than I have ever experienced from a vehicle that is supposed to have power steering.

9 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/18/2003

2003 GMC Sierra crewcab 4x4 long bed 8. 0lt. (1) I have a problem with the power steering system that when I am at idle, stopped or sitting with my foot off the breaks I can hardly turn the wheel. Only when I move the vehicle some can I then turn the wheel and still it can be difficult. (2) the dealer has replaced the hydroboost system in an effort to remedy the problem. I have brought it back to the dealer twice for the same problem and both times when I picked it up it still had the same problem sitting right there in the dealership. (3) this problem I believe is in the power steering pump not having sufficient flow to handle the friction the tires create at stopped or slow movement. Maybe a higher flow upgrade pump is in order here but the dealership told me not to bring it back anymore for this as there is a remedy coming out soon. I have been waiting for a year now with the problem getting worse and no recall being issued.

12 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/16/2002

I did not know that the power steering had broke untill I was turning off the inter state hiw ay . It had never given indication that it had broken no noise or rattle from the power steering unit it had separated from the shaft internaly , the shaft continued to operate, but there was no presure to turn the wheels. It was very hard to turn the steering wheel without the assist . It was lucky that I did not have to make a quick manuver to miss something because it was to hard to turn the steering wheel and I would not have been able to do that .

14 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/03/2002

The power steering pump driveshaft broke, causing loss of steering & loss of power assisted brakes while towing a 2 horse trailer . On this size vehicle it is extremely difficult to steer or stop even at slow speed. This is the second time this has happened. The first was 09/10/2000, also pulling a two horse trailer. The service manager has told me they have had to replace several of these pumps because of the shaft breaking. The pump assembly # is e9050. If this were to happen at highway speed the results could be catastrophic. There is no indication or warning that this has happened untill you try to steer or stop. In an emergency that may be to late.

15 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/11/2001

I have complained to GMC about my problem with the power steering and they gave me a file # c0344768. Basically, they didn't consider it a safety issue but I was concerned with my gear box freezing on me or something. I had replaced the pump once and all it took to ruin the pump again was a 500 mile trip. I know that things go wrong with vehicles but at 55,000 miles power steering should not be an issue. I am glad that it didn't cause any injuries.

16 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/01/2001

While driving at any speed and when attempting to make a right hand turn power steering will suddenly kick in, causing consumer to oversteer. Dealership has yet to determine a cause for this problem. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

17 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/15/2000

High speed turn steering failure experienced while making lane change on freeway. This caused truck to almost go off freeway onto grassy median divider area. I made violent steering wheel correction turning steering wheel to make correction in a righthand turn. This caused truck to fishtail and weave into lane I had just exited. Luckily there was no immediate traffic in this vicinity as I believe a high speed(70mph)contact between vehicle would have occurred. Brought truck into GMC dealer for evaluation(paso robles, CA. GMC truck). I was told that the steering-sensor was defective. Apparently there is no recall on this part with GMC. I was told that there is a service bulletin out regarding this problem. This was a sudden failure with no warning. As a firefighter/paramedic I drive professionally and I cannot believe that such defects should go without a recall notice published. This is the first time I have utilized your website. Please contact me if you require any additional details. Thanks!.

22 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

The front brake pads wear out within 12,000 miles on this type of vehicle. Have been told by dealer that these trucks have the same front rotor and calipers that are on the Buick lesabra. This could explain the excessive wear of the pad due to the weight difference. The steering on this vehicle will lock up at slow speeds and allow the vehicle to wonder at higher speeds. Dealer has inspected front end and stated was within specs. Vehicle also will pull at times to left or right by self on straight highway.

23 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

When driving between the speeds of 35 to 60 mph and making a right turn, steering will go for a matter of seconds. When it comes back in, the vehicle is thrown to the right. Dealer has been contacted.

28 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

31 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

When turning vehicle at speeds above about 35mph steering seems to resist turning and when more steering force is applied, steering becomes very light, causing vehicle to oversteer. Problem seems to be worse when vehicle is cold. This is a dangerous situation if you are not accustomed or prepared for it.
