GMC Sierra owners have reported 9 problems related to steering tie rod assembly (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
07 GMC Sierra(new body style) was parked. When the truck was placed in reverse and the steering wheel slightly turned there was a loud pop underneath the fron end. The right front wheel would not turn when turning the steering wheel but the left would. The truck was towed to a repair shop and was diagnosed that the inner tie rod became unscrewed from the rack steering. New inner and outer tie rods were installed and the truck was re-aligned. If this had happened while driving down an interstate it may have been disastrous.

I was backing out of a parking space and bumped the curb with the right front tire at less than 1/2 mph. Pulled forward and then backed out again without curb contact. Drove less than 50 feet and was unable to steer the vehicle. The right front inner tie rod had failed causing loss of steering. Examination of the fracture surface of the tie rod showed a fatigue fracture that had propagated to over 1/3rd of the cross sectional area. Photographs of the fracture surface were sent to a world renowned metallurgist and was confirmed to be a fatigue fracture. I contacted gm customer care regarding my safety concerns and was assigned case number [xxx]. Gm was completely uninterested in the fact that the rod failed and had a pre-existing fatigue fracture in the rod. I suggested that their engineers should examine the parts to determine whether my concerns were valid. Again, their representative was completely uninterested in evaluating the safety aspects of the failure or accessing the parts for further analysis. Had the rod end failed at highway speed, this event would likely have been catastrophic and ended in a major accident. Gm stated they would not pursue the issue further because there was an impact involved in the failure even though the impact was less than 1/2 mph. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500. While driving approximately 65 mph, the contact experienced difficulty with the steering. He drove the vehicle to a local repair shop and had the tires re-balanced. The mechanic stated that the tires were fine; however, they were wearing on the outside. A front end alignment was recommended. He took the vehicle to another repair shop and the mechanic stated that they would be unable to repair the front end alignment due to defective inner tie rod ends. The vehicle was repaired nonetheless. The dealer stated that they were not responsible for reimbursement. The manufacturer was not notified. The current mileage was 82,054 and failure mileage was 70,547.

Engine will turn over but never start, security lamp will come on-taken to dealer they said it was the security sensor was going out and that the truck thought I was stealing it, wait 10 minutes & truck will start. That works, but left stranded for over 40 minutes waiting for the sensor to let me start truck. Took 4 tries at 10 minutes each for the truck to finally start. Dealer knew right off what the problem was with out hooking up the vehicle to determine the problem.
