GMC Sierra owners have reported 17 problems related to steering column (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I did not know about this site and this accident happened in oct 2014. I was going around a curve with 40 mph speed limit and I was going 40 mph. I started to brake as this was downhill and a very large truck and I did not wish to increase speed as I followed the curve. My brakes did not respond and sank to the floor with no resistance. I had no steering ability either. I ended up in a head-on collision with a very large tree and the airbags failed. I split my head open on the steering wheel despite blocking my face with my forearms crossed; a DE-gloving 10-12 inch laceration down to the skull that wraps from my nose bridge around to my right ear in the circular shape of the steering wheel. My right leg was pinned into the center dash area as the engine block and steering column were shoved into the cab. I had to be removed from my vehicle with the jaws of life by emergency response teams. I am lucky to be alive. My quadrasteer was declared totaled by usaa insurance and destroyed without my knowledge. I called usaa 3 days after the crash after finding so many brake failures on this vehicle/year model and was told it was already destroyed, so doing an investigation was not possible. I have lived in pain and also paralyzing fear of driving since then; 3 years. I am a disabled military veteran with ptsd and prior brain surgery and this accident caused to me isolate so severely I could not even attend medical appointments due to my new fears of driving & riding in vehicles. My life is now ruined by this accident. Decreasing va disability due to inability to attend appointments caused a $1000. 00 per month loss of benefits. I can't afford my bills and have been struggling with the va to gain access to medical evaluations since they are now striving to cut benefits from anyone they can. Please recall now!!!!! who else has to be hurt or killed?????.

The steering column makes a popping sound as if something is loose in it. The problem was supposedly fixed while the vehicle was under warranty. After warranty ran out the problem came back. I was then charged $60 to get the steering column greased. This worked temporarily as before.

On 08/10/04 rattle or clunk can be felt in steering. GMC service department verified concern and lubed the steering shaft. On 09/09/04 clunk in steering column came back. GMC service department replace intermediate steering shaft, reference to bulletin 00-02-35-003f. This is a safety concern when so many vehicles are involved.
Clunk noise that can be felt through steering column when traveling over rough pavement and is more pronounced when turning the wheel to the left. Manufacturer has known of this problem for several years and still has failed to correct it for many customers. Most dealer service centers tell customers that they can take care of the problem by lubricating the upper intermediate shaft of the steering column. This works for many but is just a temporary fix as it has been reported by many that the problem returns and in most cases after the warranty period has expired. Some owners have reported returning to the dealership as many as 5 times.

Disc rotor delamination, anti-lock control. I was pulling a 3/4 ton van stuck in his yard, as I got him close to the hard surface ( driveway) I put on the brakes and the truck wouldn't stop, it hit the corner of his block house. No damage to the house however I had to replace all but hood and one headlight assy. 10 mph and neither bag deployed. I thought it was my own stupidity until reading all the issues on here w/ gm's braking problems. I feel a bit better about myself. The big issue !! all four rotors delaminated w/ 46,000 miles this is the 1st new truck I've owned and believe me it's been babied for sure. I was told by my service dealer there was nothing gm would do about this problem it was my problem for not driving it as much as I should (b. S. ) dealer wanted to charge me a grand to replace all the rotors and pads I did it for 500. 00 and still have the old parts. I'm sure gm should issue a recall on this, it is a definite safety issue did I fail to mention the muffler had a rattle in it and was replaced within the 1st 1000 miles, the thump in the steering column that has no way to be lubricated. Man I am disappointed in gm products.

Hasn't failed yet, but there is a rattle in the steering colum which dealer states is normal, sure doesn't feel normal to me. Happens any time the steering wheel is turned. "while driving".
Consumer states: set 2 yr old son in passenger seat took keys out of seat laid in console, child stuck key in switch turned enough to turn on gears without touching braking. Talk to gm said they were designed.
My 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 has a "clunking" sound, coming from the steering column, when I turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is moving. Also, my front brakes have a "rubbing sound" and the peddle gets "spongy" when I activate the brakes at a low speed.
The consumer heard a clunking noise and a pulsating sensation in the steering column while making turns. The consumer was told that the wrong lubricant was used at the factory for the steering column shaft. The shaft was unable to be lubricated because the lubricant would not penetrate between the first and second sleeve. The intermediate steering shaft was replaced and the problem got worse. Four wheel drive warning light came on.
When turning left the steering wheel squeaks. When taking minor bumps on the road there's a rattling or a pulsing feeling coming from the steering wheel/column. Driver door made a rattling noise (which was fixed) and there was a pumping noise coming from under the dash board by the floor (which was fixed).
A GMC service manager conveyed to me that several gm truck owners have reported excessive wear to the steering shaft leading through the firewall. Wear at a u joint occurs around 15,000 to 25,000 miles due to excessive torque on the joint, as explained to me by a gm service manager. Gm has recognized the problem by providing a new steering rod. The service department kept the old part. Hopefully this fixes the problem. This fix came at a cost of $180. 00 to me. This cost, I believe, should be born by gm. If the steering rod is left unreplaced, could loss of steering control result for these vehicles over time? I own a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500hd, 6 liter, v8.
There is rattle/vibration in my truck's steering column. Any time I go over an uneven surface I hear an annoying rattle coming from under the hood in front the steering wheel, and I feel a consistent vibration in the steering wheel. This rattle started with about 35,000 miles on the vehicle, just in time for the warranty to expire. My truck now has 60,000 miles on it with the same annoying problem. My dealer keeps telling me there is probably going to be a recall on it, so I don't want to pay to repair it (whatever may be wrong with it).
The steering column experienced a cracking noise while driving 1-25 mph, and while making turns. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who repacked the steering column with grease. After 22,000 miles the problem recurred. Vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer informed consumer that the steering shaft was too short, and they needed to order a new shaft. Consumer was waiting for the part. . . . . . . Consumer claimed that if this short shaft is working up and down, connected to steering box, then to tie rods, means everything is moving. Consumer wa sconcerned that this was a safety issue.
Steering problems on my 2003 GMC Sierra 1500hd. It makes a "clunk" sound when turning. It has been to the shop 4 times. The last time they installed an re-engineered steering column, but problems still persists.
I got a new 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 the front bumper start to show rust in under 4000 miles then I got oil change the mechanic call me and told me that my brake are solid rust both front ones the frame is rusting all over the place at 10000 the steering column knuckle near the steering box is solid rust and he says it is very dangerous to have that rusted so bad I have sent 4 emails to GMC about it and go to marina GMC in san leandro where I got it from they told me that all of them are rusting and they not going to do any thing about it.
Consumer complained about a couple of problems. One was transmission. While driving at various speeds gear slipped. When vehicle was taken to dealer for service mechanic determined that the cause was low oil. The other was for the steering column. When driving at various speeds vehicle knocked and squeaked intermittently. Steering column had to be replaced once before for same problem.
Recall 98v242000 concerning steering gear/frame bolts: at any speed the steering wheel has too much play in it. Also, a grinding noise is coming from the steering column. The vehicle has been repaired twice for the same problem, but the problem still occurs.
