36 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 10/16/2013

I was on the ramp onto I-75 in detroit when I started to brake, the pedal went down to the floor. I had a little bit of braking power (approx. 10%) so I was able to stop after some distance inwhich I had to maneuver onto the shoulder to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me and the barrier wall on the ramp. Luckily, I was going slow on the ramp with the traffic. There had been no indication prior to this incident there was a problem. After this incident I checked the vehicle and noticed that brake fluid was leaking on the front driver's side. I had heard later about GMC offering a reduced charge for the repair at dealerships but when I called the person on the phone he had no knowledge of this offer.

38 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/08/2013

The brakes on this truck completely failed without any warning. Could not stop the vehicle except for the emergency brake. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor. No warning lights, or any other indications of brake failure until there were suddenly zero brakes. I was very lucky that this didn't happen somewhere else, with my one-year old daughter in the truck. I see that the brake fluid is squirting out of one of the four steel lines just under the master cylinder when the brake pedal is pressed. Upon inspection I also see that all the lines look to be corroded. I intend to replace all the brake lines on this vehicle now due to the corrosion seen, as I do not believe it would be safe to drive otherwise.

39 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 08/13/2013

This occurred on 8/13/2013 in central virginia and the truck had 93461 miles on it. While moving my 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 truck in my driveway, my brake pedal went to the floor because the rear passenger side brake line had burst. There was no warning light or chime indicating a brake system issue. The dual master cylinder system only provided enough braking to slightly slow the vehicle down and the parking brake didn't help much. I had it towed to a shop and they said it was due to a corroded steel brake line. They told me that they have had to replace these lines frequently in a large number of Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks. They replaced the line and I had planned to replace all of the other lines in a few months. Two weeks after the repair was done and approximately 50 miles later, another line failed while I was driving approximately 45 mph. Again, there was no warning lights or chimes and the pedal went to the floor. I estimate that there was approximately 5 to 10% braking power and was unable to stop the vehicle. The parking brake did help some but is no a substitute for a real emergency brake that the older vehicles used to have. Additionally, it is not easy to lift your foot up to it as the pedal is mounted somewhat high off the floor. The repair shop said that this time it was a steel line running to the master cylinder and could be seen leaking fluid from inside the engine compartment. I had them replace all the lines. I don't understand why the NHTSA hasn't demanded a recall of these vehicles for the corroded brake lines and the failure of the dual master cylinder system to offer any reliable method of stopping the vehicle. I have had several other vehicles that are much older than this truck and their lines were always rust free and never failed. Although most are not recorded here, there are thousands of gm truck owners reporting the same problem.

40 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/28/2013

41 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/11/2013

There was almost a crash! a car, from the right side, started to pull out in front of me at an intersection. I hit the brakes hard and felt what I thought was the abs activating. Fortunately the car stopped and I was able to swerve around the car and I avoided a collision. It was close! a 1/4 mile down the road I applied the brakes to turn left into my destination and the brakes were not effective and the pedal went to the floor. We inspected the truck and found brake fluid leaking in the vicinity of the rear axle. We looked underneath and found the main metal brake line that goes over the gas tank to the front of the vehicle has ruptured. We called the local GMC dealer and found no recalls or service campaigns for this problem. The truck is now at a local independent shop for repairs.

44 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/30/2013

I have a 2002 GMC sierra sle 1500 extended cab pick up. I had the truck on ramps. When I backed off of the ramps, I had total brake failure. Service and parking brakes. I could not stop or even slow down. The truck proceeded down a hill backwards and into a ditch. The brake pedal went straight to the floor. I imediately pushed the parking brake to the floor. No brakes at all. After farther investigation, found the hydraulic brake line that runs along the frame rail to the back brakes completely corroded and all fluid leaking out. Brake line almost corroded into two pieces. The parking brake shoes have worn down to metal on the back of the shoe. This is the second set of parking brake shoes I have replaced in 70,000 miles. The vehicle has been well maintained and these two issues should not be happening. I have read that there is an ongoing investigation into the corroding brake lines and a recall on parking brakes, but only on standard transmission vehicles. Mine is an automatic transmission. How many more damaged vehicles and injuries or deaths does it take for the investigation to turn into a recall?.

45 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Three months prior I lost power steering because of a metal line leak. Then coming up on traffic I'm applying the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, luckily I was able to pull onto the shoulder of the road to avoid an accident. Had I not been able to pull on the shoulder my GMC would have slammed the vehicle in front of me and would have pushed that vehicle into the car in front of that one. Have not gotten the truck back from the shop yet but I could see brake fluid leaking from a metal brake line. 2005 GMC 88,000 miles this is my first GMC and my last. I think all GMC products should be recalled and fixed!!.

46 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Moving the truck out of my driveway I experienced a soft brake pedal. Several minutes later total brake failure. Luckily I wasn't going very fast. Was able to stop and investigate why my brakes failed. All brake fluid was gone. Under the drivers side the brake line failed. Fluid was dripping from a rusted brake line. This truck was garaged when not used and has not been exposed to salty roads. I have been driving for nearly 60 years and never had a brake line failure. Gm should be held responsible for the poor design and repair. I see from the internet I am not the first to complain, I can't understand why the government hasn't forced gm into a recall for this serious safety problem.

47 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 08/18/2012

Was backing into my driveway and all of a sudden my brake pedal went to the floor and I could hear a noise like water running. I looked under my truck and saw a puddle of brake fluid on the ground. Turns out my brake line let go. I took it to a mechanic and all the brake lines were badly corroded and have to be replaced. I also tried to use my emergency brake and the brake cable snapped from also being corroded. I don't live near salt water or anything. I'm just glad this happened in my driveway and not at high speeds or it could have been a lot worse.

48 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 08/12/2012

I was approaching a stop sign at the end of my street and when I applied the brakes the peddle went to the floor. I rolled to a stop in a grassy area and saw brake fluid leaking from the base of the vehicle. I brought it in to my mechanic and he said the brake lines rusted out to the rear brakes. He replaced the lines from the abs pump to the rear axle and the brake lines from the rear axle to the rear calipers. The cost to replace the se lines was $433. 46. This is the second time this has happened to this vehicle see odi number 10402034.

Stepped on brake pedal to shift out of park into reverse, pedal went to floor got out and found brake fluid dripping from front left of truck under the drivers door on frame. Looked underneath and saw severely corroded brake lines on outside of frame, could not see leak as it was hidden on top of frame, brake lines too corroded to fix had to replace all. I am very grateful this happened in my driveway.

52 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/03/2012

I put my truck in reverse to back out of the shop and my brake pedal went to the floor. I quickly threw it in park an turned the truck off. I then pushed the brake pedal again and it again went to the floor and I heard brake fluid squirting out. I put the truck on the lift and raised it up to inspect the issue. After doing so I found very rusted brake lines and components. After research I found this to be a very common issue with these trucks. Seems maybe gm should be fixing the issue. I wouldn't think a truck less than 10 years old should have such rusted brake parts. Especially since the exhaust is made from stainless, why not brake lines?.

56 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

I was driving about 35mph and I was coming to a red light so I put on the brakes and I heard a pop and my brake pedal went to the floor and I almost went thru the intersection. I got out of my truck and saw that I was leaking brake fluid from the front. I opened the hood and saw my front brake line was leaking around a corroded area on a hard brake line attached the frame rail. It was a hard brake line failure not a rubber line like in the wheel well. I cant believe that a truck that is 12 years old has a brake line rust thru, this is very dangerous.

57 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/07/2011

Total brake failure. Due to rusted lines brake fluid poured out.

58 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 10/17/2011

I own a 2004 GMC k1500 with about 70000 miles on it now. On 10/17/11 at 67410 miles I was doing a normal oil change with the vehicle elevated on a rack. I noticed fluid dripping on me from under the drivers floor area. Upon closer inspection I found almost all of the brake lines leading from the front of the truck to the abs unit rusted badly and leaking. As I was moving the vehicle from the rack the brake pedal went to the floor. With very careful operation and using the parking brake I was able to get the truck back on level ground. I replaced all the lines leading from the abs unit to the front of the truck rerouting them along the frame. If this failure had occurred on the highway or while pulling my trailer a serious accident may have resulted. This problem is a manufacturing/engineering defect in many of these vehicles. You should not lose all of your brakes when a line ruptures. The dual master cylinder should allow you to have brakes on the opposite side, gm should recall these vehicles and replace the brake lines with stainless or another engineering fix.
