My 2022 GMC sierra denali limited (6. 2l l87) had an engine recall performed by an authorized GMC dealer (paul masse Buick GMC) in November 2025. Prior to the recall service, the vehicle had no check-engine lights, no drivability issues, and no knock-related symptoms. Immediately after picking up the vehicle from the recall service, the check-engine light illuminated within seconds of leaving the dealership parking lot. I returned the vehicle immediately. The dealer diagnosed a failed knock sensor and replaced it at my expense. There were no prior warning signs or symptoms before the recall visit. General motors declined responsibility, classifying the issue as an out-of-warranty repair and confirming only that the recall procedure was followed. Gm did not evaluate whether dealer handling, component disturbance, or recall-related activity contributed to the immediate failure. I am submitting this complaint because the failure occurred directly after recall service, suggesting a possible recall-adjacent issue or unintended consequence of recall procedures, and because gm declined to investigate causation beyond procedural compliance.

The contact's grandson owns a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that after the vehicle was purchased from a private seller and driven 258 miles, while his grandson was merging off the exit ramp, the engine seized. The low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact scanned the vehicle and retrieved dtcs: p0011, p0016, p006dd, and p0521, stored dtcs: p06dd p0011, and permanent dtcs: p0011 and p0016. The engine was replaced by the contact. The local dealer was contacted for parts. No further information was available. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 100,148.

This is the 3rd catastrophic engine failure since purchasing this new vehicle from the dealership, the vehicle is currently at the dealership and is available for inspection. The latest diagnostic report has been attached from the dealership for reference. My safety and the safety of others was at risk with each occurrence. The 1st occurred on the interstate when a lifter rod bent causing loss of power with no warning, engine was rebuilt by the dealership. The 2nd occurred on the interstate when a different lifter rod bent causing loss of power with no warning, engine was rebuilt again by the dealership. The 3rd occurred just recently while on a highway. The engine suddenly turned off with no warning. The dash told me to put it into neutral and start again. I had to coast the truck for a long distance after the sudden loss of power in order to attempt to restart the engine. The engine would not start. The diagnostic report from the dealership states "engine is seized tight, maxi fuse is blown, needs engine replacement. ".

I just surpassed my extended warranty (5 year/100,000 miles) by a couple of thousand miles and my coolant control valve has gone out. The problem is so common that the part is on back order for months at a time. Gm says that they issued special coverage for 2020-2022 models, but my dealer is telling me that my VIN is not covered. They want to charge me $2,400 to replace it. This is insane. It’s a very common problem that they know about and it’s going to almost break me. We need help!.
The starter started dragging about a year ago and on November 12 the 2019 GMC truck would not start. We had it towed to harper GMC in minden, la. They told us the motor was locked up. This vehicle has a little over 40,000 miles on it. Has always been parked in a carport out of the weather and still looks brand new. I see where 2021 GMC trucks have a recall on the motor and this is the same problem with our 2019.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local o'reilly's, who diagnosed that the cylinder #2 glow plug had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the manufacturer's special coverage that was related to the failure. The contact stated that the special coverage service was for the previous model years with a 3. 0-liter turbo diesel engine that had experienced the same failure. The failure mileage was 38,773.
Purchased vehicle in July 2025. Started having the engine failure issues described in recall "l87 engine loss of propulsion (related field action: see special coverage n252494003)". Gm says that the recall work was completed in may of 2025, however, the same exact issue as described in the recall exists. Engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. We believe the recall fix was not performed properly as vehicle has same issue. Dealership has not helped us and gm referred us to you.
I brought my 2024 sierra in for its l87 recall. It passed. Two weeks later I had to bring it in for check engine light. They reset the system under a TSB that is known to occur with the l87 recall. Not a total of 300 miles of passing the recall I was driving and the engine started making a horrible noise and I started experiencing loss of power. I managed to get the vehicle safely parked. The dealer pulled the oil filter and said it had 100% metal contamination in the oil. The filter looked like a glitter bomb went off. It took 3 weeks, they replaced the engine with a remanufactured engine even though I told them new only. They also had to replace the radiator as it was polluted with metal.

Truck started with a knocking noise in the engine that developed into a grinding noise. Dealer service department inspected and did a transmission tear down only to discover the issue is with the excessive play in the crankshaft. At 13k miles, the service department has stated the entire engine needs to be replaced.
First my torque converter went out, no warning lights only shaking wehn shifting, I got it replaced already it cost me $2400 second warning light service for brakes, traction and power steering come on and off. And sometimes truck doesn't brake well and steering wheel feels hard to drive, it has happened while on expressway with family. Third engine oil low add oil warning sign comes up alot and I have to add oil, engine has a rough idle now, also when I turn truck on smoke comes out while having a rough idle, recently it started knocking, I haven't moved the truck since than.
I own a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 (black widow edition). The truck has only 23000 miles on it. I experienced an idle engine warning mid driving, and oil hot warning. It did shutdown the engine of the vehicle and as I was trying to merge safely to the right lane and right side of the way the steering became very hard which put me and 3 of my employees in danger. After parking safely, I did call onstar and they ended up towing the truck while we waited for hours in the dark and cold temperature to get a ride. State police and mdot did not show up even though we called them multiple times. This was a nightmare.

It is the same issue with 2021-2024 6. 2l engines that have already been recalled. I have to replace lifters and cam because of the issue.
While driving my 2024 GMC sierra denali ultimate on the highway, the engine suddenly failed without warning. The truck shut off completely while I was traveling at highway speed. I was fortunate to be able to safely maneuver to the shoulder, but the sudden loss of power created a serious risk of a collision with surrounding traffic. The failure appears to involve the engine or engine control system. The vehicle engine is currently available for inspection upon request. Prior to the incident, there were no warning lights, messages, or unusual symptoms. The shutdown occurred abruptly with no prior indication of a problem. This vehicle previously received the ns25249400 safety recall repair on August 12, 2025, and it reportedly passed all required checks at that time.
Engine knock, loss of power, engine failure warning, ticking.
I got 3200 miles on my 2025 GMC 1500 6. 2 engine. The engine crash. Knocking. Skund like its going to jump out. Been at dealer in columbus. Since Thursday. No one touch it.
While stopped at traffic signal, vehicle suddenly stops running. Restarted vehicle and had to feather the throttle to keep it running. Engine began to run normally so I continued driving. When I reached approximately 35 mph, a loud rattling noise started and experienced a severe loss of power. Fortunately I was able to safely get out of the traffic lanes to the side of the roadway. I inspected the vehicle, no oil leaks, no coolant or transmission leaks. No warning indicators on the dash. Oil pressure normal. Temperature normal. I limped the vehicle home to be towed to dealer. Approximately 2 months ago this vehicle passed the recall inspection and had the recommended oil change. There was a previous warranty repair performed on a stuck exhaust valve in the #8 cylinder. The vehicle was also brought in to the dealer for suddenly cutting off while driving approximately 50 mph. Again I was able to pull off safely. The vehicle then started normally and I proceeded to drive. The dealer inspected the vehicle and could not replicate the issue, and found no electrical or mechanical trouble codes. There were absolutely no warning indications prior to each of these events.
Ecm - engine system code p0700 and tcm - transmission system code u0073. The truck went in to first gear and wouldn't go over 5 mph on the highway. The dealer is saying it can't be replicated but it's happened multiple times to the vehicle in the past week. The truck was taken to the dealership and inspected but they claim nothing is wrong. The check engine light came on as well as the aforementioned codes.
Took the vehicle to the dealer because of an engine noise. It had issues with the valves knocking when it had around 1000 miles. I took it in and now the truck has around 67,000 miles and I’m being told it needs a new engine because of a bent rod in the engine. I was told that I need a new engine. Previously I had a lot of other issues with the front wheel hubs clicking. But, this truck didn’t even make it to 5 years and now it needs an engine.
While traveling in high-speed traffic, the vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic mechanical engine failure without any prior warning lamps, messages, or symptoms. The failure manifest as a loud, rhythmic ticking and knocking noise immediately followed by a sudden loss of propulsion and severe engine shuddering. Safety risk: the loss of power occurred in active traffic, creating an immediate crash hazard. Because the engine could no longer maintain speed, I experienced multiple near-miss collisions while attempting to navigate the vehicle to safety. This "limp mode" state placed myself and other motorists at extreme risk of a rear-end or side-impact collision. Component & inspection: the failed component is the engine (6. 2l l87 v8), specifically believed to be a failed lifter or bearing within the dynamic fuel management system. The vehicle and its engine are currently available for inspection. Confirmation: the problem has been confirmed by a certified dealership service center. Diagnostic codes include p0300 (random misfire) and p0016. The dealership identified the symptoms as consistent with internal mechanical failure.
After pulling my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 slt into a parking space at a local store, I shut off the engine. I observed the lighted ignition switch and the dash icons were illuminated even though the engine was completely off. Having had my foot on the brake at the time I decided to test the ignition switch to determine why it was lit while the engine was off. When I pressed the start button there was a loud, whining starter like sound, grinding like metal on metal. The noise was so alarming that I immediately took my hand off the ignition. The engine was still off. After waiting a significant amount of time I tried to restart the engine. Exactly the same thing occurred. On the final attempt to start the engine, 15-20 minutes later, it started and ran quietly like nothing had ever happened. On returning to the vehicle my wife asked what all the loud grinding noise was about. She had heard it while she was inside the store. I advised her it was our truck! the incident was shocking to us both and because of its bizarre nature I was afraid to drive the vehicle back home. As I already had an appointment on November 6 at deluz chevy for another incident, I called them on November 3 to add this incident to the existing appointment. This incident was added to the November 6 appointment. Unfortunately the service department did not assess the previous incident and only addressed this incident.
My wife was driving at highway speeds with all are kids when the trucks motor suddenly loss all power all check engine lights illuminated and what I'm assuming had major engine failure causing rod knock.
My GMC dealer falsely reported that recall work was completed on my engine but it was proven by an independent service center that it was not done. Items that have been proven to have not happened were 1. Replace engine oil with higher viscosity oil, 2. Replace oil filter to match new oil, 3. New oil fill cap labeled with oil type, 4. New insert for owner's manual. The way I initially learned the work was not completed was by warnings on my dash about low oil pressure and low oil level in my engine this past weekend. The independent service center provided confirmation that the invoice from my GMC dealer was falsified and that the work they stated was completed was not done. As a result of the failure to complete the work, my engine ran on insufficient oil and, based on the dirtiness of the oil in my engine, it compromised its condition.
Took truck in for recall on sept. 19th, it passed and oil was changed per recall. On Nov 1, driving on ih 20. Engine oil pressure went to 0 and engine stopped. The dash showed that oil pressure was low and to pull over vehicle. I was going 75 mph at time. Pulled to emergency lane and engine died. Had to tow to dealer. It was very unsafe due to speed and traffic on highway. At no other time was there any indication of engine problem.
Heard a ticking noise then check engine light started blinking along with service esc and parking brake. Took it to the dealer and I had a bad lifter again. I was previously repair for lifters under warranty a little over 2 years ago.
Driving on the highway, the engine shuttered, but kept going. When I had to slow down, the engine stalled and would not restart. It left me in the center lane of a three lane highway. I was able to push the vehicle off to the side of the road. Very dangerous. No warning lights came on, no alerts. I had the truck towed to folsom Buick & GMC in folsom CA where the diagnosed a complete engine failure. The have now had my truck for a full month. They are trying to get GMC to share the cost of the replacement motor. In the meantime, I'm renting a pickup truck so I can continue to work.
We were traveling when it went into limp mode slowing our speed way down. We got it to a dealership and they determined low oil pressure and metal in the oil. My vehicle only has 1185 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph and making a turn, the vehicle lost motive power. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated after the failure. Upon investigation, the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 25v274000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with lifter failure and camshaft damage. The vehicle was repaired. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case, and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 86,960.
My engine is currently being torn down at the dealership. I heard a ticking noise coming from my engine so I took to the dealership I bought it from and when they did their diagnostics and inspection they said it was a connecting rod bearing failure.
On October 23rd at approximately 0900-0915 hours I arrived at a friends house located at [xxx] . As I normally do, I pulled up into the driveway which has a pretty significant incline. I shifted the column shifter into park, and turned off the vehicle via the push button ignition switch. The parking brake/hill brake system automatically engaged as per normal operation. I exited the vehicle and before I could shut the door, the vehicle began to roll backwards. The driver's side door hit me in the right shoulder which pushed me to my left and caused me to roll my left ankle due to the down slope of the driver way. While I felt immense pain in my right ankle, I was able to jump back into the truck and slam on the brakes, causing both rear wheels to lock up and skid in the driveway. I then turned back on the vehicle, noting that the transmission position was still in park, and the parking brake/hill brake was still engaged. I had to disengage the push button parking brake/hill-brake, shift the vehicle from park into drive to move back up the driveway. This time I ensured that the vehicle did not move after following the exact same steps. My truck under went an approximately 30 minute software "upgrade" approximately 2. 5 weeks ago. I believe there was an issue where the park sensor did not fully engage, leading the vehicle to believe it was still in an operational gear, however it does not explain how it was able to not only over-ride the parking/hill-brake itself, as well as allow me to shut the vehicle off and exit the vehicle. This safety hazard has caused me an injury that has already caused me to miss 48 hours of work (I am a federal firefighter) and will require more missed time should surgery be required. There were no warning lamps, the backup camera was not engaged, the only audible sound was the beep that the vehicle makes when engaging the parking brake automatically. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Pulled up to a stop sign, the engine shutoff and would not restart. Had the vehicle towed to the dealership. Received a call that the engine will need to be replaced. The code is a p0016. Same code as the other 6. 2 l87 gm motors, but is not currently under the recall. They found no metal in the oil pan and the engine only has compression on cylinders 2 & 8. Make no mechanical sense. Before this, I had no engine lights, I had no oil burning, I had no smell of oil and the truck ran fine. No loss of power or any other issues.
While towing a trailer on highway 77 in northern wisconsin, my 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 experienced a sudden engine failure. The dashboard lit up with alerts for the engine, transmission, abs, and traction control. I safely pulled over in a 55 mph zone with narrow shoulders and heavy truck traffic due to nearby road construction. The truck lost all power, and I had to block the driving lane to transfer the trailer to another vehicle, creating a hazardous situation. There were no prior warnings or issues. The truck had regular service at independent shops, and I had checked and topped off the oil that morning. Lahti towing & service recovered the vehicle, changed the oil (no metal shavings), and replaced the camshaft sensor, but the truck still wouldn’t start. They then towed it to rhinelander GMC, where a broken timing chain was diagnosed, requiring a full engine replacement. The vehicle is currently at rhinelander GMC and available for inspection. I have photos of the dashboard alerts and data from the gm app documenting the incident.
Complete engine failure. I was driving approximately 55 miles an hour, then all of a sudden the cruise control automatically shut off and a series of alarms are triggered. When pressing the accelerator pedal, the engine vibrated excessively in cleary indicated catastrophic engine failure. I was lucky enough to make it to the nearby dealer who confirmed a complete engine failure. I ended up buying a new vehicle that day to avoid being stranded.
On 10/21/2025 as I was traveling on the highway in kansas at 60 mph, the vehicle lost power and the engine went into limp mode immediately reducing the speed dramatically. Multiple warning lights flashed on the screen. I was able to get the truck to the side of the highway. The vehicle never started again. I was informed by the dealer that the vehicle would need a new engine.
Vehicle purchased 8/31/2025 October 20, 2025 "reduced acceleration" alert while driving on why up a significant grade with no way to pull off to the side of the road. Speed limitied to 35mph. Stopped by dealership pulled po6dd code. Appointment made for November 12th. November 12, 2025 routine oil change and service noted "unable to duplicate concern on vehicly, currently no p06dd is present only dtc that was found in history was u1643 lost communications with transmission control module can bus 2. Cleared dtcs and test drove vehicle and is operating normal no issues. Unable to duplicate. " December 4th, 2025 driving on interstate and "reduced acceleration" alert. . . Pulled into nearest dealer and code "p06dd" pulled. December 5th, 2025 returned to home dealership "found code p06dd. As per TSB#25-na-307, checked the crankshaft end play, found the crankshaft has excessive end play. This is an indication of a worn thrust bearing. As per TSB engine replacement is required. " vehicle currently has 6,800 miles.
