The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the driver's side tail pipe flange bolts connecting the tail pipe and the muffler snapped, causing the tail pipe to hang down. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact had gone underneath the vehicle and saw that the muffler was disconnected from the tail pipe and that the exhaust bolts had snapped. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled to have the vehicle repaired; however, the vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,105.

Recently purchased a 05 GMC Sierra 1500 hd with 6. 0 vortec engine. It has a noticeable ticking and after checking my exhaust manifold bolts I found that four are broken and allowing raw exhaust fumes into the air. With the bolts breaking the manifold is warped and broken. This is all at 94,000 miles.
Manifold bolt(s) broken. Heard it's a common thing. Really disappoints me about my trust in gm.

Complaint on gm exhaust manifold bolt defect, inferior brake/ fuel lines. Mine is a 2005 GMC. Defective exhaust bolts affect 12 million gm trucks from 1999 to 2007. Gm exhaust bolts are to small brittle for securing exhaust manifolds. Bolts snap off causing exhaust leaks. Trucks not passing emissions and dangerous exhaust fumes entering the drivers compartment of the vehicles while driving. I and my family get a carbon monoxide headache when I drive it and have had to pull over to the side of the road feeling like I was going to pass out, open windows and sit until I felt better. I have also had problems getting my truck to pass emissions due to the leaks and the leaks are causing the vehicles to be none epa compliant because of O2 sensor errors resulting in failed emission test. Also brake and fuel lines are not suitable for northern states causing brake failure with out warning, fuel lines are all rusted and swelled in danger of bursting causing fire without warning. Ford and other vehicles I have worked on use stainless fuel lines and look like new for life of vehicle. I have also seen other manufacturers use powder coated brake lines on the entire vehicle and 20 year old vehilces show no rust problems. My 2005 GMC from the rear end brake hose to the wheel cylinders they used powder coated brake lines. Those lines look like new yet. Gm knew the powder coated lines were better why did they use faulty galvanized steel on the rest of the truck? as it is now my truck can't be operated on the road without $3000 in repairs due to gm using poor quality parts. The truck has had these problems for over 5 years now and only has 138,000 miles. Trucks like this in southern states have over 250,000 miles, lines still good. Recall needs to be done. . Exhaust manifold bolts broke off causing the drivers side heat shield to fall and jam under the steering linkage. This caused me to almost drive off the road. I had to force the steering wheel to get the vehicle to turn.

I found 2 broken exhaust manifold bolts on my 2005 sierra (70, 717 miles), 1 on each side, 1 was actually missing & the other was just hanging there, I then went to check my wife's vehicle, a 2003 chevy tahoe ( 90,420 miles) & that also has 2 missing , 1 from either side, you cant imagine how sick I am at this point, both our vehicles are in need of major repairs, please tell me that general motors will need to recall these vehicles & make the needed repairs, sick to my stomach & cash strapped, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. My GMC sierra has the 5. 3 v8 engine and three of the exhaust manifold bolts are broken off and it is leaking exhaust fumes . Thes bolts should not break off so easily. I feel this is a safety issue and a recall should be issued to repair this problem. I know other owners who have the same problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 hd. The contact stated that the bolts on the manifold were fractured and caused leakage through the exhaust emission before going to the catalytic converter. The dealer was notified who advised replacing the bolts and manifold. The manufacturer was notified who stated there were no recalls and offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 99,500. Exhaust manifold bolt breakage,I'm writing in regards to my 2001 GMC sierra w/5. 3 liter motor,I have recently discovered a bolt broken off on my head that mounts my exhaust manifold is a defective or inferior product used by GMC this repair should not be necessary for any vehicle if the proper materials were used during original assembly of the vehicle by GMC or any other company in that regard, this repair is a very expensive according to my mechanic to the sum of $760+tax to repair and if it is not fixed it can lead to catalytic converter failure amongst other emission failures as well and possibly fire in the engine compartment as well due to excessive hot exhaust heat escaping from the broken bolt area into engine compartment,as for this complaint I have done some research on this matter and have found a large majority of other GMC owners with this same problem and are not very happy with GMC's inability to own up to responsibility as a manufacturer to fix this obvious and expensive defect due to inferior or improper material used on these vehicles,so any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated by all GMC owners affected by this consistent problem. .
The contact owns a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500. When the vehicle was started, exhaust fumes entered the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to john paul's Buick GMC (3615 s 108th st, greenfield, WI 53228 (414) 482-6246) where it was diagnosed that there was a fractured exhaust manifold gasket. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that they could not assist the contact because there was no recall issued for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Service request # filed at general motors regional office #(71-448842107)intake manifold gasket leaking in all 4 corners on my GMC sierra pick up truck. Loss of anti-freeze, and possible seizure of engine. Backorder of gm intake manifold gaskets. A petition has been created and sent to gm and the better business bureau explaining . . . . As of April 10, 2002, there is a nationwide backorder of the intake manifold gasket. At this time, is it not even known when the part will become available. Being aware of this proves there is a serious problem to be addressed. Because of apparent poor engineering, gm can not manufacturer replacements fast enough for all the vehicles in which they are needed. Intake manifold leaks can lead to any number of very serious, and expensive, problems. While the part itself isn't costly, the labor to repair it is very intensive, and has been quoted around $800 usd (give or take a couple hundred depending on the vehicle). This is in addition to any other costly problem(s) the intake manifold gasket leak may have produced. We are demanding accountability from general motors. A nationwide backorder should be reason enough for gm to assemble a recall. We can only hope that the world's largest vehicle manufacturer who has been the world's automotive sales leader since 1931 will stand up and claim responsibility for a problem that is so prevalent among their vehicles. Recalls should be mandated in all cases of incompetence, not solely when it affects public safety. . Read more...

Found the exhaust manifold bolts on both sides of the engine snapping off for no reason at about 65k miles. When I asked the local dealer about this they stated they would need to remove and reset the engine heads in order to remove the broken bolts. I did not have them repair the problem due to the cost they quoted. I now have three bolts on each side which hold the manifolds in place. The problem seam to happen at the change of the season from fall to winter. In the extreme cold weather, on a cold start up, there is an obvious exhaust leak. As the engine heats up the leak does disappear. This is a saftey hazard due to the fact if the engine exhaust blow by is transfered into the cab the driver could become unconsience and death could occur.
